Does anyone here sing in a prog band?

I recently started singing back-vocals for some of the music my band plays and gotta say that it gives me a great deal of enjoyment.

My biggest problem is getting that very first note, which is hard when the whole band plays in a good volume and becomes distracting. Plus it's harder to hear yourself than when nobody else plays.

Singing also gives me another challenge. Since I'm the keyboardist it's hard to sing and play at the same time especially during the parts where I sing I play a kind of an arpeggio where I switch between hands on every note. A matter of coordination between hands, feet(for dumper pedal) and mouth.

Our vocalist has a kind of voice that would fit well in jazz music, and in prog rock sounds very interesting.

I think a good idea for you, Andrew Vernon, would be to start singing a lot. Doesn't really matter what. Any style will do. Starting from simpler staff is preferable. Maybe some pink floyd for example. Take a few singing lessons or read some material about singing - especially the breathing habits and any technique (so that you can sing for a longer period of time and clearer).
