Want to give it a shot. Hehe. Any tips? Never really sung before, but I think I have some thought provoking stuff to say.

What kind of prog? Pink Foyd and Rush for example are two completely different things. -------------

Um, sort of... I don't know if we're a prog band per see
, but we sure are (or, more like; will be) quite influenced by prog
bands, even though we to a greater extent see our predecessors in the
Swedish progg-movement (see this thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15197&PN=1 - Swedish progg vs. progressive rock
). But we have only just started and have only had one rehearsal
together this far (even if it lasted for more than five hours...) and
the record from that one isn't that very good. We're not that serious
about it all, we just see what happens and try to make the best of it
as it happens. Our keyword is fun. Aside from that, I'm the lead singer in the band only because of one reason: I'm the only one who can't play an instrument of us. That said, my voice is far from good, but I'm trying to improve (knowing people who can sing for real is a good way to get feedback) Also, I write the lyrics, which makes it quite interesting when we try to figure out how the song should sound, since I can't use anything but words to try to give them a feeling of what kind of song I've had in mind for the lyrics. My tip for you is to first find out if you can sing. Try it on honest friends. If the test seems to be a failure, don't give up. It's never too late to learn. You could try to get better with the help of friends, or by paying a professional song pedagog (or whatever they're called in English). Then, when you feel that your voice is okay enough, try to find some people to start a band with. If you then later on decide that your voice wasn't good enough after all (as might happen with my own band) you can always be some kind of shadowy lyrics writing member, or learn to play an instrument (if you can't already). Essentially, it all comes down to how much time, energy and money you are willing to put into it. I have no idea if this was of any help at all. |

yup, i used to sing in a progmetal band.. we are mostly influenced by dream theater, symphony x, spiral architect,rush, etc... the band's name was Prog -o-matic, we have some several unreleased songs, co written with the members. it was short lived lasting only for two years. but it was one of the most unforgettable two years of my life.. being able to play in front of a good crowd, having to share our music, and the adrenaline rush while youre up there on the stage, with all those screaming stacks of Marshall and ampeg amps, blistering sweeps and shreds and mindblowing drum patterns (of course made even better with my singing, i hope, -------------

Uh well I'm trying to push my band to progness, we're more
hardrock/metal now. Our guitarist (who sucks at guitar btw) sings very
good, but has a low voice. I do the occassional high falsetto voice,
and I usually let the other band members correct me whenever (often) it's out of key. You should go to church, that's where a lot of people learn to sing. |

I recently started singing back-vocals for some of the music my band plays and gotta say that it gives me a great deal of enjoyment. My biggest problem is getting that very first note, which is hard when the whole band plays in a good volume and becomes distracting. Plus it's harder to hear yourself than when nobody else plays. Singing also gives me another challenge. Since I'm the keyboardist it's hard to sing and play at the same time especially during the parts where I sing I play a kind of an arpeggio where I switch between hands on every note. A matter of coordination between hands, feet(for dumper pedal) and mouth.
Our vocalist has a kind of voice that would fit well in jazz music, and in prog rock sounds very interesting. http://www.halfpastfour.com - www.halfpastfour.com for some of my band's (badly recorded) music.
I think a good idea for you, Andrew Vernon, would be to start singing a lot. Doesn't really matter what. Any style will do. Starting from simpler staff is preferable. Maybe some pink floyd for example. Take a few singing lessons or read some material about singing - especially the breathing habits and any technique (so that you can sing for a longer period of time and clearer).

i would like to say sing whatever you like;
record it ;
then listen to it;
improve on pitch;
i'm not in a band; but i sing very well, especially songs like 'sleepwalkers' - vdgg 'heart of the sunrise' - yes '2112' - rush

I sing for a rock band. Which I'm quitting, because all they do is Pearl Jam covers. My ambition is to sing in a Prog band, maybe even to arrange something for a chorus/prog rock type thing. As soon as I graduate from high school, college, and graduate school. I got a prog band but there's no way in hell I'll ever make a vocal sound in it our vocalist is pretty untalanted,but it's not really that noticeable If you're a really bad vocal you can always try speaking like Lou Reed  |
