Melodic Death Metal is often called "Gothenburg Metal".  It's not exactly an oxy moron.  It has some catchy melodies mixed in with driving death metal guitars.  Check out Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, At The Gates, Arsis, Wintersun, and Insomnium for some decent mDm.

What I meant was although I know why it's called melodic death metal, and agree that the name is justified, the phrase "melodic death metal" still seems like an oxymoron.
