My three choices are:

1. “Weird Al” Yankovic – White & Nerdy

2. Lena d'Água & Atlântida – vígaro cá vígaro lá

3. CCCP & Amanda Lear – TOMORROW

In spite of the large number of votes for The Shaggs – Philosophy of the World, I see this as indistinguishable from terrible music. Perhaps that is the point, but I chose not to vote for it.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Oh yeah!

Extreme artists are controversy and evocate contrasting evaluations.

While The Shaggs is famous for the ineptitude, they were young girls and beginners who were able to compose, play on, and record an album. Frank Zappa popularised them more by calling The Shaggs better than the Beatles (there's a larger story there), the third best band in history, and played some of the Shaggs songs in a Dr. Demento show in the 70s amongst his favourites. Kurt Kobain of Nirvana cited the Shaggs as an influence. I genuinely like the album, some call it primitivist, I find it charming, and I'm interested in its impact and reception (even if Zapppa was being tongue-in-cheek -- he did seem to genuinely appreciate it in its way, but then some would call, say Beefheart music just terrible). I love Ed Wood films (so bad they're good to me), and part of that mystique is how bad they are while being sincere.

It might depend somewhat on each person's sense of humour. I definitely have an appreciation for the absurd, but if it was three girls who intended to make a bad album (both in musicianship, form, and the lyrics) it likely wouldn't have the same appeal to me. I don't think it's bad considering the girls experience, actually. For me it is charming in its way. I find it delightful and charmingly naive. To others it's terrible and nothing more, or just an interesting curio as a novelty item.

I suppose if I listened to it more times, I could appreciate it. After all, I did eventually manage to appreciate The Residents - Goosebump.

Yeah, I'm one of them (at least that's what I think of Trout Mask Replica).

I've put the Shaggs on three. It wasn't quite the first time I heard some of their stuff, and when I saw their nomination I wasn't very optimistic for them getting into the top 3. But then there wasn't that much that appealed to me (the Madonna, Bregovic and Kershaw and maybe others from the out of competition list would have easily beaten all three that I chose). And also, although this is kind of difficult to enjoy, it is truly unique and bold, and ultimately I even thought, yeah, I may like to listen a few more times to it just to appreciate its raw charme.

scaruffi dixit:

The Shaggs, the three teenage sister Wiggins from New Hampshire, released only one album, Philosophy Of The World (Third World, 1969), that stands out as one of the most incompetent musical works of the time. They played two guitars and drums, and their "do-it-yourself" style and the sincere, intimate tone of their songs (My Pal Foot FootI'm So Happy When You're Near) predated "lo-fi" pop of the 1990s.
Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

I enjoy a lot of Frank's music but the music he enjoyed was not for me. I voted for The Shaggs because it made me guilty listening to it. It was bad.

Here is a song by The GTO's an all girl band that Zappa produced. It's awful. Frank did help Alice Cooper, so that's a plus in my book.

The difficulty voting in this poll is that I am already familiar with many of the songs. I do however try to abstract from it as good as I can. These songs are candidates and deserve a comment from me.

Madonna - Ray of Light. I am absolutely no fan of Madonna (for several reasons), but the Ray of Light album I can actually enjoy. For once music and not attitude was in the centre. This song is genuinely good, especially for someone who also likes Björk and Garbage.

Gel Gör Beni - I like quite a lot of Turkish music, f.e. Baba Zula and Gaye Su Akyol, as well as some of the old Anatolian rock. I also enjoyed this track, and I don't think there is anything to be guilty about here. If anything, I miss a few more instruments to get some more variation.

RAH Band - Cloud Across the Moon. This is VERY camp, but in quite a fun way. There are obvious traces back to the disco era. I really like the chorus, but the song is a tad too long for its own good. Overall it is a also bit hard to take it entirely seriously.

CCCP Fedeli alla Linea - TOMORROW (con Amanda Lear). Raw, punky and unpolished. Like it a lot. Again, genuinely good, so it is not a guilty pleasure for me.

The Go Go's - Our Lips Are Sealed - A straight forward pop/rock song, and as long as it is a good one, that's enough for me. There's room for that too.

Lena d'Água & Atlântida - Vígaro cá vígaro lá - Portuguese new wave? I hear an echo of Blondie. Another fine pop/rock song.

The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World. Now we're talking! Depending on your point of view it is either the embarrassing result of people with no musical talent trying to make music, or a radical (unintentional?) avant-garde project. Or is it both? In any case, it is a fascinating listening experience. Personally I enjoy "My Pal Foot Foot" more. Here the guitars are not quite off-key enough.

Lana del Rey - Video Games. Another genuinely good song which I have loved deeply since it came out. I know there are vicious debates about the autenticity or lack of same of Lana del Rey, but I don't really care. It's a good song.
