Subject: Interactive Poll # 666 - GUILTY!
Date Posted: June 30 2020 at 16:11
For something different, this week’s theme is the Guilty
Pleasure.
For this poll, we’ll define a guilty pleasure as follows:
A piece of music that you enjoy despite feeling that it may
not be generally held in high regard or seen as weird/unusual.
Some of you may think you have nothing to be guilty about
and your taste is impeccable. Then you are lying to yourself. Dig deep and find
your guilty pleasure. There is no shame. Think of this group as a safe place
(actually, I can’t promise that…).
Doesn’t have to be a popular song, but it could be (pull out
the Beyonce if you so are inclined, I am sure Queen Bey wouldn’t mind being
mentioned on prog rock forum). It could be a genre or an artist you might feel
a bit sheepish about (novelty songs, hair metal, William Shatner, David
Hasselhoff, …). We’ll be flexible around here.
Some basic rules:
1. Artist must not be on the PA database.
2. Must be a piece of music you like.
3. We’ll try Mickey’s suggestion and you can nominate a piece
and include alternatives if you want. You must at least nominate an initial song
to reserve a slot on the poll. I’ll put in your screen name in until nominations
are final.
4. Nominating will be kept open until end of day Friday July
3. Edit your original post to finalize your nomination. If it is unchanged,
I’ll put in the song that is there.
5. Voting starts when I get all selections in the poll on
Saturday July 4 and goes until whenever.
6. Vote for up to three selections not your own. If you
really think other people should be guilty and the only worthy selection is
yours, I have a place for you in the poll, and if you didn’t nominate and
don't want to vote for anyone’s selection, I also have a place for you in the poll.
7. Have fun!
Participation in this poll may mean that you are DAMNED!
(Cue segue into a bonus video just for Mickey since we didn’t have any music
videos with explosions last time.)

Donna Lewis – I Love You Always Forever
I feel like this is the audio equivalent of the demolition
man going home to a warm cup of herbal tea and watching a romcom. My backstory
is that in ‘96 when this song came out, I was working in a small office (enclosed
space) with a few other people. We all liked having music on as we worked but our
tastes were varied. Sometimes we all had our headphones on but other times, the
radio. Well, somehow, we got into a routine that whenever this song came on, it became the office ‘jam’. We would break to sing along, move
around, what have you. Good times. Along the way it earwormed into me, and I
ended up liking it. So much so, that when I later married and then divorced, I
somehow ended up with my ex-wife’s copy of the CD. I still listen to that song.
My extra guilty pleasure is novelty music, specifically
covers of rock songs done in unusual ways such as my extra Metalachi song from last week. I had
planned on Dread Zeppelin as my extra for this week, but that changed last week
when someone decided to post the exact song I was thinking of. Most people like
a novelty as a one-time deal with some wry amusement, but I can listen to on
end. This one I have been playing on and off for a good part of the past year.
It’s a lot of fun.
Bullhorns – Thunderstruck
And I’ll admit, through my Amazon music account, I now have
a playlist of over 60 different cover versions of AC/DC’s Thunderstruck that I can listen
to on shuffle play all day long. Yeah, I’m weird.

far out man!!! I'll go with 3 myself... if anyone dislikes them particularly.. I likely choose that one!!! hahah. If no one vomits.. I'll just choose one for the voting option.

Posted By: micky

no surprise to most.. I love this band.. few here do then again.. what do they know about 'fun' man..
2nd.. few know of my love of her... but one of the best and most treasured of PA's friendships that became a real life friendship started over our mutual admiration of her..
and perhaps my guiltiest of pleasures.. southern gospel music.. I don't believe in that Christian mumbo jumbo myself... but what it is for me is very spiritual.. and put together Gram, Emmylou and ... ohhh.. LINDA.. and it is pleasurably pure musical guilt

I don't really believe in the whole "guilty pleasure" thing. However, this particular song (which I have always loved) might sound rather out of character to some people:

Great song, I also heard two metal covers of it.

Love these guys. One of the first rock concerts I went to was this weird festival in which the bands, in order, were R.E.M., Berlin, Ratt, Huey Lewis and the News, and the Cars. It was a one day show, and Ratt was playing in the middle of the afternoon, clearly hungover, and talking about banging groupies between songs. It seemed like most of the crowd was there for Huey Lewis, so it wasn't going over well. The loudest applause during Ratt's set was when, in a Spinal Tap-ish moment, Huey Lewis's helicopter came down next to the stage.

Fascinating. I'm thinking about it and have already one candidate, but not yet agreed with myself on that one.
A remark:
A piece of music that you enjoy despite feeling that it may
not be generally held in high regard or seen as weird/unusual.
I could easily find something of that kind, but would never feel guilty about it. I may interpret your game this way and ultimately nominate something of this kind, however the real challenge is to nominate something about which I feel properly guilty because it goes against my own values. As I said, I have an idea, but the issue with that one are the German language lyrics, which therefore hardly anyone else will get...

Ok. There's a theme here. I hope I can be forgiven. From 1967, 1970 and 1967, respectively. And the first is my (ab)nomination, the other two are alternatives for the theme.

This is my nomination.
Here comes the first song I've shared from my country, Turkey.
I honestly think I don't have a real guilty pleasure related to the arts. I must have shared or I can share anything I like notwithstanding how absurd it might seem.
Closest to being a guilty pleasure can be this Islamic religious song, as I'm an open atheist. It is about divine love, and its translation is "Come and See Me", and its complete name is like "Come and See What (divine) Love Has Done to Me". As I said this is not an actual guilty pleasure, since I mentioned that I love this tune in various places and to more than several people I know.
I could've picked a ridiculous song too, but this comes closest to the criterion for me, here.
Eyüp Hamiş - Gel Gör Beni (The performer is Eyüp Hamiş, but this religious song belongs to Yunus Emre and has lyrics. I love this both as instrumental and with vocals & lyrics, yet this instrumental version is the best I've found on Youtube.)

I do not consider Ratt a guilty pleasure.
I got laughed at for listening to bands like Foreigner, Depeche Mode, a-ha, Bon Jovi, U2. I like a ton of songs from these bands. Also for listening to metal with the line "you listen to those people that scream?".

I could never vote for her especially with that cover pic.. ..umm hmmm.. OMG...they broke the mold with her I'd consider her a guilty pleasure but for one problem.. anyone who doesn't dig her is a f**king idiot so it sort of kills the guilty part.

true.. and to be perfectly blunt.. perhaps I am not exactly the best arbitrator of what constitutes guilty tastes For I'd consider prog fan to have guilty tastes in digging that bobblehead stuff they love so much but myself would be embarrassed to be caught listening to .. though again.. it once got me out of a speeding ticket once the State Trooper asked me what I was listening to that inspired me to do 110 in a 65. Now here's another kind of thing... as mentioned before.
Music-wise this is seriously good (thinks me), but the lyrics unsettle me.
English lyrics are here: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/das-messer-knife.html" rel="nofollow - https://lyricstranslate.com/en/das-messer-knife.html
It's a kill the sexy lady in my bed fantasy, and as it's a fantasy I shouldn't worry much about this, but I do. This band uses the fascination of fantasies of violence a lot and manages to make them attractive. Not sure what mood this gets some of their easier to be disturbed or influenced fans into. They are in my view not quite as problematic in this respect as the outside Germany much better known Rammstein (who have a strongly overlapping fanbase), and musically I like them much more, but still... I'm all for ignoring lyrics but these are disturbing and oddly fascinating at the same time. And yes I know these kinds of fantasies are super-erotic for some... men and women alike, but that's not my cup of tea. And yet I love this song. Please judge about my guilt.
(I'm also now guilty for disturbing the light-hearted fun atmosphere of this poll with something that could demand proper thinking, which makes it a doubly good fit! )

that's not Manowar but Nanowar, italian band that is a parody of Manowar and European power metal (Rhapsody, Blind Guardian for example).
Fabio Lione singing on that song shows he at least has a sense of humor. That song clearly is a parody of Rhapsody. (or better said Crapsody, like i call them).
As for Manowar, I've grown to dislike them.

Now if this isn't a moving song... or is it? Authentic Schlager music from Germany's old communist east.
Actually, when I heard this for the first time, I didn't like it. I hate most Schlager (as pretty much every German who cares for good music does), and this one, while clearly not the worst of the bunch... was part of it, so no chance. But it was extremely popular in Germany (also due to a cover version of a top western German singer being a megaseller), and believe it or not, over time I started to see some depth and quality in it that other songs from that genre don't have. So yes, I like it now.

^ Re Micky and Journey: I once did a fill-in gig with a band that could nail that closing vocal part and they were naive enough to give me a mic. I have no idea how off or on I was when I joined in, but that was one of those one time only experiences. Re stupid: The best fun is stupid fun.

I still laugh.. thinking about the one time I did Aretha for Karoke... absolutely destroyed You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman.. got a standing O.. and saluted the audience by falling down drunk off the stage.
Actually.. I do have quite a good singing voice. I did lead vocals in the bands I was in and was recruited into the choir of the church me and Spawn of Satan attended when we trying to do the church thing after i suppose one of the elders saw us play (didn't say too much about that considering where we were the house band was considered the local gay bar)

Okay, now for my third and final installment. Everyone hates this band, but no one hates them as much as working musicians in the south where their inevitable song request is usually met with well known smart-assed zingers that every working musician has memorized. It doesn't matter if your band has been playing funky jazz all night, someone is going to want to hear some skinerd. BUT. there is one song I do like. If you can make it to the 3:45 minute mark, check out the excellent keyboard buildup with Al Kooper on the Mellotron and Billy Powell on the piano.

Sorry micky, but you knew I would be a +1 on Ratt. Why is this poll any different than the other polls? I was basically posting guilty pleasures there too. 90% of my collection is "guilty pleasures". Given I grew up on Golden Oldies and glam metal, and most days prefer AOR to Prog. I might have to dig really deep to come up with a "guilty pleasure" that will please this crowd.

yeah... the Power of Ratt compels us however.. they were too good to really consider them a guilty pleasure even on a damn prog forum but I couldn't resist. There were always a number of us here that were fans... to be honest..even some of the haters were likely closet fans. Remember how Tony R dogged me everytime I brought them up. Yet I always thought Tony liked them but enjoyed taking a piss on me (and everyone of course)

Up to Geo but suspect he is of the spirit of the polls in general.. pick what you want.. vote as you want. What matters man.. is what we are doing now.. having fun, tossing off songs with no shame like we were 15 years old again... and checking out some things we may have never heard before.. and even better. .stuff we may never want to hear again.

Choice of song should be whatever you think represents you as your guilty pleasure. As for voting, vote as you see fit. It's like with Cristi's prog poll. I wasn't sure whether to go with I liked the most or what I liked the most that I also thought was catchy. It's up to you. There is no wrong.
I will say you are already a winner for all the stuff you have put out so far. I had no idea what I would be getting and it's definitely been eye opening.

I'll put forward this one. Proto-Britney Spears.
and oops...I'll do it again. This ear worm got me to buy the album...and I liked the video.
and thirdly to dig into micky's glam bag I will go with another of my favorite videos and one of my favorite 80's hair metal songs. Motley Crue, Ratt, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister..all of these bands were early favorites and I guess that on a prog site the fact that I still like them make them a guilty pleasure.

The Monkees ~ "Shades of Gray"
Michael Nesmith & the First National Band ~
The Stone Poneys ~ "Different Drum"
obviously I love the Sone Poneys song.. but the other two.?
I never was a Monkeys/Nesmith fan.. other than a few uptempish rocking songs which I really did like.. and knew neither of these
Shades of Grey? I do like the Piano melody and nice harmonies.. not really my style.. but definitely pretty good song.
Joanne - oh hell yeah... now that is Micky style.. go with that one
Took out the videos for space purposes.....Thanks...The Nesmith sans Monkees is really kind of country, but I believe it was on the pop charts, which used to be more wideranging. I had a feeling you'd like it, if you'd not heard it before.

One last thing, I hope.
I find this tune very sorrowful. It was already quite sad in the cartoon, but I cannot describe the sorrow I feel listening to this Gregorian chant version. I don't remember feeling this sad for a production intended for kids, other than while reading "The Little Match Girl" when I was a small child.
