No "Phase IV", no "Silent Running", no "Solaris", no "Welt am Draht" ("World on Wire"), no "Soylent Green", no "Dark Star" - all the best are missing (except for "2001" and "Twelve Monkeys", which are easily the best here). Only the effect-laden space operas are in here. Not my idea of SF.
Oh, and of course "A Clockwork Orange". But is that really a Science Fiction movie? The same for "Altered States", which is another good one. But the rest is nothing but crap. "Jurassic Park", laugh my ass off. The story alone is ridiculous. Even granted that it might be possible to breed dinosaurs again, do you have any idea how long it would take until they reach full size? 30-40 years is a good estimation, if not more.

My opinion is that "2001" is the best science fiction movie (and why it isn't on this list is rather alarming), and one of the best movies of all time.

Oh, I see, thanks BaldFriede. I should have realized the MarktheShrak is too knowledgable to forget that one (however misguided he may be on the Iraq war).

And to further elaborate, there is something about 2001 that is so powerful, and it's hard to explain what it is. I think in part it's because it's such a realistic depiction of space flight. Space is depicted as such a void (the murdered astronaut who just spirals through space, just tumbling and tumbing; the sound of breathing as the other astronaut tries to get in. The complete lack of sound while the astronaut is getting in), and on and on. Every time I see it, I am just in complete awe of it. It's like it really isn't a movie, but a sort of nightmarish dream.

Star Wars really but Empire is a good close second. Watched Dune on DVD last weekend. I think I'll need to watch it again for a second opinion.

^^^^ this would be the greatest sci-fi movie ever made, if only someone would make a good movie out of it. the original movie was godawful.

They had a competition in UK where people wrote in to describe the plot for this Dune movie. David Lynch came third.

I really like an obscure little New Zealand film called "The Quiet Earth". A guy
wakes up and everyone is gone.

Quiet Earth is good, I put that in anohter sci-fi poll called Son Of Best Sci-fi Film.

I know 2001 is regarded as a classic, but it didnīt do much for me, I found it way too boring. I voted Alien.
