Subject: Best Sci-Fi Film

These are what I consider the best of the best in sci fi films. I kept the Star Wars and Star Trek films down to what I think are the 2 best in those series.

I don't know what the hell happened, but I put 2001 in at the top and for some reason it's not showing up. I think we got an error here.

Oh sh*t! I put it in the poll question! DUHH! Can someone delete this so I can redo it please?

This pisses me off. This is the only forum I've ever seen where you can't correct your own mistakes. I sent an e-mail to max about this, they need to fix it. I'm going to put up another one.

considering my hairstyle I should have to vote for THX-1138 , but none of the above. "Phase IV" by Saul Bass. another good one is "Silent Running" by Douglas Trumbull

Am I the only sci-fi lover that thinks that movie is overrated? All the performances are wooden, the pacing of the movie is too slow,Ford's voice over is terrible.Visually stunning though.

The story that the movie is based on,Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,is much better.

of the list I like "Twelve Monkeys" (a movie that many seem to have failed to misunderstood; at least that's the impression one gets when looking at the comments in the IMDB. hardly any of the reviewers understood the meaning and importance of the last scene), "A Clockwork Orange", "Brazil" and "Altered States". I voted for "Phase IV" and "Silent Running" though, because they are two forgotten little gems. although at first glance these two movies seem to have very little in common (one deals with intelligent ants, the other with a team of astronauts caring for the last forests somewhere in space), there is a common theme: how men react in a claustrophobic situation

You seem to like the less bombastic and extravagant films there Baldy. You got good taste, I like some of those too. Silent Running is good, seen that a few times. Phase IV on the other hand I've heard of but haven't seen it yet. There are 2 post-apocalyptic films you may not be familiar with, On The Beach and Testament. Both very intelligent and well acted. Check 'em out if you haven't already.

I saw "On the Beach" (the 1959 version with Gregory Peck, not the 2000 remake for tv). I can't find anything about a movie named "Testament" though; are you sure about the title?
one movie I really like is a tv movie by Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 2 parts, "Welt am Draht". I saw it a few years ago. that movie has the incredibly high average voting of 8.3 (out of 10 possible) from a total of 196 voters in the IMDB; the highest average result I ever saw

Testament is a 1983 film starring Jane Alexander and a young Kevin Costner. It's available on DVD at http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com - www.deepdiscountdvd.com But this is region 1 though.

Rainer Werner Fassbinder's "Welt am Draht" ("World on the Wire") is based on the same theme as "Matrix", but was shot about 30 years earlier (1973) and is a thousand times better

there is a very complicated legal situation about that movie at the moment, and WDR, the tv-channel it originally was produced for, is not even allowed to rerun it again at the moment. one can only hope

I like the old 50's sci-fi. I'm going for "Forbidden Planet" with Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Neilson and which (says here) is a remake of Shakespeare's The Tempest - as I've neither seen or read the play, I cant vouch for that. Can't remember the name of the girl in the film but I know she had a very short skirt and that had a big effect on a 12 year old boy I can tell you........

But there's loads of good films here. I really enjoyed the latest "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise. But you just know Star Wars is going to win....

1 Bladerunner - the Director's cut

Although "the director's cut" versions aren't always that much different or better than the orignal, in the case of Bladerunner that certainly isn't true. No more voice-overs. Ridley Scott also dropped the endpart.

This is and will always be a very special scifi-movie with a great score from Vangelis. The movie and score are inseparable.

A must see!

No "Phase IV", no "Silent Running", no "Solaris", no "Welt am Draht" ("World on Wire"), no "Soylent Green", no "Dark Star" - all the best are missing (except for "2001" and "Twelve Monkeys", which are easily the best here). Only the effect-laden space operas are in here. Not my idea of SF.
Oh, and of course "A Clockwork Orange". But is that really a Science Fiction movie? The same for "Altered States", which is another good one. But the rest is nothing but crap. "Jurassic Park", laugh my ass off. The story alone is ridiculous. Even granted that it might be possible to breed dinosaurs again, do you have any idea how long it would take until they reach full size? 30-40 years is a good estimation, if not more.

Oh, I see, thanks BaldFriede. I should have realized the MarktheShrak is too knowledgable to forget that one (however misguided he may be on the Iraq war).

And to further elaborate, there is something about 2001 that is so powerful, and it's hard to explain what it is. I think in part it's because it's such a realistic depiction of space flight. Space is depicted as such a void (the murdered astronaut who just spirals through space, just tumbling and tumbing; the sound of breathing as the other astronaut tries to get in. The complete lack of sound while the astronaut is getting in), and on and on. Every time I see it, I am just in complete awe of it. It's like it really isn't a movie, but a sort of nightmarish dream.
