    Posted: March 31 2012 at 14:32

Almost four months have passed after the end of the Post 70's Prog World Cup. I've been doing other things and now I want to make another World Cup. This time for Latin American bands only, which are often less discussed than all the others.

How would this be? Simple. I would choose the most important bands based on their album ratings (for example: in order to participate, each band should have at least one album with 15 or more album ratings)

I know that most of the bands participating would be unknown to some of us. That's why for each match I would be posting 2 or 3 youtube videos so everyone can make up their minds.

Here's when you may tend to think: "How could I possibly decide which band is better with only 2 videos?". Well, the idea is that after I post those videos, others would start debating and posting more videos in order to show each of the bands skills at their best. Plus, it's just a f***ing game. Don't take it that seriously.

What do you say? Anyone interested? It's the only project I would be willing to carry on. So no other alternate proposals, please.

I am personally not that interested in tournaments like this, but if we're talking exposing people around here to some of the more obscure bands, then you should definitely go for it.
I have a fair deal of South American prog in my collection(I actually just reviewed an El Reloj album) - and there are loads of fantastic artists both old as new from this side of the world.
I have albums from: Spinetta's various groups, Bubu, Bacamarte, Nexus, Cabezas de Cera, Laghonia, Flor de Loto, Violeta de Outono and some I can't remember right now - but yeah there's a world of music lying just beneath the mainstream borders here at PA. We just need people to venture out on a limb with something that isn't sung in English...

I'm for it.  I've often wished that more people would take a similar approach since I think it silly with various "best" tournaments that really it's just the best know that wins, and some will call everything else crap without even being fmailr with all of the choices.

What I don't like is the 15 ratings criteria example, but instead cover much more territory and keep each round quite short.  You'd miss way too much good music that way, and I laos prefer to learn about the more obscure ones.  I think you could organise it by PA category as well, and then have a final that pits the one with the most votes from each category.

I really like the idea.  I think it would be an excellent way to find out about some new bands that many of us have never heard, and I would be more than willing to participate.  The only concern I have is that we've been flooded with polls lately, due to the whole "survivor" tournament thing (a good idea, imo, but got way out of hand).  I'll vote yes anyway because it will give me something to get excited about in the poll section.

Seems there's not too much interest on my idea. Anyway, the following days I will be watching the scoreboard to see if this tendency changes (which I don't think so). So far, no LA Prog World Cup...

There probably is more resistance due to the glut of contests recently.  Perhaps when those die down you'll find more interest (though I don't expect that the majority would be interested anyway since most prefer polls with ones they already know and love and most are unfamiliar with Latin American bands).  Still, I think there would be sufficient interest for it to be a good series.  And if just a  few people discover some music they really like thanks to it, and get exposed to the Latin American scenes, then I think it has merit and is an honourable effort.

If you want to make such a poll, I'd say go. I am not very familiar with prog from Latin America (I heard maybe for or five songs by LA prog bands) and I reviewed two albums by an Argentinian artist (of which one has become rather specialin my book). But if you document the entries by inserting YouTube clips or URL's to tracks like PA mp3 samples, anyone can decide to listen and vote.

I'm from Mexico, and I don't really know so many bands from Latin America, so I would be very interested in seeing (and listening) to the results. I say, just go with it, anyone not interested, well, they can just not enter the threads and that's it. Just, please, don't confuse Latin America with South America, because then you may end up leaving Mexico itself out, and I'd really like to see (hear) mexican bands in the tournament too.

Of course I wouldn't be leaving Mexico out. The idea is that the tournament focuses on the whole american continent except for the USA and Canada.

I suggest you first to make a poll, if it's ok to make a poll about polls!
You got my vote.

This is actually a really good point.  Once the current rage of survivor polls dies out you'll probably get a more favorable response.
