Anyone who knows this Canadian punk bizarro outfit might be thinking either that NoMeansNo are a weird band, yet a punk band, or that NoMeansNo are some freaky cross between prog jazzcore and punk rawk. For me they are without a doubt rock, and even further, they are progressive (though there is noooo similarity to the classic prog sound), and they are punk. I find that to be an awesome combo.

"Wrong" is probably the best way to go if you want to try them out. An album with hilarious lyrics, insane time changes, face melting riffs, powerful bass (you think Squire's bass had treble...), punky guitars, and incredibly incredible drums of the fastest proportions.

I will post some linkies:

For those immediately tagging this as hardcore or punk rock, take another look please. If you ask me they would be tagged either "Prog Related" (I mean if Styx and Journey are there, then these guys more than deserve a shot), or RIO/ Avant-Prog (The line between the two can be thin).

Prog-Punk indeed Big smile
I think "Why Do They Call Me mr Happy" is their most progressive.

I tend to agree. It's probably my fave as well (though "Wrong" is a VERY close second).
"Cats, Sex, and Nazis"= most genius song title/most hilarious song/ greatest hardcore punk prog song ever!

I have actually been thinking of suggesting them myself, but they will be a difficult fit for the subs on PA.
Maybe the 'Heavy Prog' team could be the most appropriate?

I don't think they are Avant enough for Rio/Avant, though of course they might be pleasing to fans of stuff like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (who are doubtlessly influenced by them!)

You do have a point, they aren't really avant, with that Heavy Prog is also a problematic genre, considering many of the bands have either a blues or metal influence, and have a much more classic prog sound (most of them at least). Though the music is damn heavy... but punky (very punky) and has hardly any classic prog sound, more classic prog elements such as freaky time changes and different songwriting. So in a way they fit in the avant category, but I guess they really really don't.

Heavy Prog? Well... But it's true that they're not easy to fit in any genre (and the R.I.O. section had become... something I can't even explain).

Well yeah because you can't really explain what the RIO section is... and they can't really fit anywhere else, but they are for me definitely prog. That's why I'm thinking prog related maybe, though they are more progressive than that.

They have been passed on to the Heavy Team already. As said before they won't be a perfect fit for any of the subs, they are too "one of a kind". Big smile

I'll keep an eye on the developments and will keep the Crossover in mind if the Heavy team can't see them in their realms. I could see them in Crossover too.

let's call them jazz-punk, or pazz-junk like they like to label their music.

Pazz-Junk is very kewl (I spelled cool really weird). I wonder what happens PA opens a Prog-Punk sub-genre. Wonder if there are actually enough artists for that...

cf the post-punk thread I started once. We have post-rock, post-metal but post-punk is missing Wink

Anyone have anything new on this one? Does it usually take much time or was it just kinda ignored?
