I don't really enjoy his solo stuff but Genesis, aside from being the most appropriately named band on the planet, is...well....good. lol

Here is to a speedy convalescence.

And my favorite song off of Selling England

This saddens me very much....now I will never have a chance to see Genesis, my favorite band ever, play live.

Would you like some Bailey's?

I agree...the Genesis reunion will never be. That sux.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I thought this was a bumped thread at first.

Shame he had to go out for health reasons though. An excellent drummer.

Collins says

Phil Collins: "I don't think anyone's going to miss me"

Well on that account he is mistaken - Collins will be missed and it means no Genesis reunion unless we see them with another drummer. Its sad news but Collins leaves behind a legacy of great music. Phenomenal drummer, phenomenal singer. Oh well, roll on the tribute bands and compilations.

I read another piece somewhere where he talked about being suicidal, not sure if he was kidding or not.  I wonder if the guy has some undiagnosed depression goin' on.  To say "no one will miss me" is either delusional or joking, but sounds a bit dark again.

I think if he reads the forums at various prog rock websites that would probably go a long way to causing depression.

I hope he doesnt take that too seriously. Forums overall are giving him credit for the Genesis fanbase. Collins kept the dream alive after so many years. The DVD Genesis LIve in Rome is now a classic, the last great Genesis tour with Collins!

A shame that such a distinguished career should end like this. It's rare to find someone who can play drums in an otherworldly fashion and have an incredible voice as well, and not a bad pianist either. A very talented man i hope we still hear from him in some way in the future.

Phillip collins' discography is great, and genesis is only a part of this, don't forget the collaborations with John Martyn, Mike Oldfield, Jethro Tull, Anthony Phillips, Steve Hackett, Elliott Murphy, Peter Gabriel, Café Jacques and Brand X.

Also, his solo discography is quite good, his cover of "tomorrow never knows" is excellent.

I'm happy to have caught Genesis in 92.  Not exactly Foxtrot-cool, but it was a whole lotta fun anyway.  We had 4th row seat in front of this speaker that was as tall as a bus.  The bass literally shook your body.

very well put!!Clap Collins will never retire for me until I retire permanently. Hope his latter years find him some relief over his health problems.

He sorta said this in a recent interview---but I was hoping against hope he'd do a Second's Out tour---and just sing with Chester on drums. I lost hope Peter would ever do a tour---because he would have done it by now. I like Phil with Genesis--not all of it but 70% of it. The past week I've been listening to 3 Sides Live and enjoying it--some great singing and drumming.
It's too bad the two greatest writers of beautiful melody-- Banks and Hackett--  could make some great prog together, don't get together to keep hope alive. Why Banks hates Hackett so much I will never know. If Genesis is finished, my only hope is if Banks and Hackett make some music.

I wouldn't be surprised if Phil was persuaded someday to join a Genesis reunion, that is of course if Banks and Hackett are still breathing

I briefly caught some of his recent concert in NY on tv yesterday, where he was singing all those old Motown tunes, the first thing that struck me was how old and frail and a little unsure of himself he was, it shocked me, i hope there isn't something more serious wrong with him. It is a sad day that he's retiring and that he also feels hated.
You must be joking.....Take a running jump......

I do feel sorry. Another drummer stops after Bruford, though for totally different reasons.
I do hope he finds some fun in being retired, and he doesn't fall into a depression.

Yes he has, and I think Jim is right about there being underlying depression issues.

Still, a shame, he's given me a great deal of pleasure over the years.
