Topic: What to buy! Posted: April 04 2010 at 16:20 |
Hi. I'm having a very hard time picking which albums to buy. What shall i do. I don't have a single album! Should i like pick up 5 King Crimson albums, or should i buy an album from a band i like - Nektar. Should i get the "classic" ones?

For King Crimson, I'm a Larks' Tongues in Aspic kind of guy, but it probably wouldn't be the best starting point for most, The début is where I started and it was a good place to start even if it's not my favourite King Crimson album. In fact, part of why I'm here is because of In the Court of the Crimson King (played a part in my journey).

First 5 Prog albums(from the 70's) you should get:
Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull
Fragile - Yes
Selling England by the Pound - Genesis
Trilogy - ELP
Mirage - Camel
If you're into the more adventurous, then replace the Camel one, the ELP one and the Genesis with:
H to He Who Am the Only One - Van der Graaf Generator
Octopus - Gentle Giant
Larks' Tongue in Aspic - King Crimson

But should i start buying the "Greatest" of the prog rock, or should i buy "random" albums, just like a Nektar album?

You should get whatever you'll enjoy most.

And the second to look into is: Magma - Kobaia Soft Machine - Third Herbie Hancock - Crossings or Sextant Art Zoyd - Symphonie pour le Jour... Ralf Nowy - Lucifer's Friend

Just noticed your playlist. Art Bears, Amon Duul II and Gong as well as other excellent ones. You don't need our help.

Aphabetically.... I wish lastfm had worked for me. When I was fairly new to this PA site, I would go to the category ("genre") pages and go through the tracks 'til something grabbed me (not having unlimited time, if it didn't grab me quickly I would move on). I quickly found that French bands were more likely to appeal to me in various categories. Sampling is a great way -- I'd rather use my own ears to get started than ask others unless my tastes are really defined and I'm looking for something specific. If you find you like a track by an artist you've heard, then get the album it's off. That worked for me. I find youtube to be a very good source since I can look up something I already like and discover lots of related music that I will like (and google when I'm looking for something with well defined parameters).

^those are great choices.
Mind you that Aqualung is not a Prog album, yet it's great. I would go for A Passion Play.

Can't really argue with that list (although there are some there I don't see why anybody likes, namely ELP's debut and Pawn Hearts). Also, agree 100% with Pablo- Aqualung is great, not really prog though, get A Passion Play.
But damn...you must fart money!

King Crimson-Larks Tongue In Aspic, Starless and Bible Black, Red, Lizard, and the entire Great Deciever box set.
That is IF you're taking that route....which I wouldn't oppose.

just make sure that if you get Nektar's A Tab In The Ocean you get the correct copy and not the sad US mix that I'm stuck with
