With all respect to George, it's between Lennon and Mac really. Tough call....I'll go with Mac by the slightest of margins.

George has my vote. Let's see if I'm the only one. Of course, he did not have the impact or the output of the other two, but all of his songs rank among the Beatles' best.

during and post-Beatles I reckon George takes it for some really solid, straightforward work, John close behind and Paul if the hit parade is one's thing

I go with George, only because While my Guitar Gently Weeps is his, my favourite Beatles song. Also Here comes the Sun is very good. Of Course, he is the one who contributed less songs for the band (not counting Ringo). I think McCartney did a greater amount of good songs for the Beatles. And certainly, Lennon is the one who made the best songs during their solo output.

I'm glad to see George is keeping up with Paul and John so far. I had read the question as only concerning Beatles songs, and now realize it doesn't. That strengthens my choice. George has clearly had the best output since the breakup IMO. No other post Beatle album stands up to All Things Must Pass, not even Imagine. This is not to put John or Paul down, though.

he's got mine and apparently not just mine....
ifyou add George's Badge on the Cream Goodbye album ans My Sweet lord on that list in ther first post (lust so mumùerically it's even), it's no-cinch the winner
he came about late in the Beatles career, but every sing of his starting with Taxman was useful to the group. But the other two didn't realmly wan't to leave him as much space as they were for themselves

1. John
2. George
3. Paul
I Want You (She's So Heavy), Dear Prudence, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, I am the Walrus and Strawberry Fields Forever belong to my favourite Beatles songs and so does Here Comes the Sun.
John Lennon wins, but George Harrison added an essential touch to the Beatles oeuvre. Edited by someone_else - June 28 2009 at 13:44 |

George doesn't come into it. Paul by a very short straw for me, but it's close.

George made the best songs IMHO, even though he wasn't given much space.
McCartney is an endless source of strong melodies and creative musical ideas, mixing of styles etc.: he would be my nr. 2.
Lennon made the most rootsy, bluesy sounding music of the three, although he also had some psychedelic experiments as well. I like a lot of his contributions, but he would be my least favourite of the three.
For me, they all come close, though.

I had to vote for George. He may not match Lennon and McCartney in Quantity of songwriting output, but he certainly does in quality, and in my opinion surpasses both of them in that aspect. But it is a very tough call I must admit.

George. He has less songs than the lennon/mccartney songwriting crew, but his songs were always higher in quality and very underrated.

For many years I considered John Lennon to be my favorite Beatle as far as songwriting, vocal style and experimentation. Back then, in my crowd there was a rule of thumb. If it was love song, it was probably Paul. If it was heavier, more controversial or if it pushed the envelope, it was probably John.
It has already been mentioned that George was not given as many songs per album so when you consider quantity, you realize how good Harrison's contributions were.
If I Needed Someone, Think For Yourself, Taxman, I Want To Tell You, I Me Mine, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Something, etc........quality wins over quantity.

I don't know why most people believe that. Paul was as experimental as John, most of the sound effects on Tomorrow never knows were his contributions, he was mostly responsable for the Sgt Pepper album while the others weren't very interested, he wrote the Beatles heaviest song (Helter Skelter), I think his songwriting was even more diverse than John's, but still people like to believe he only wrote silly love songs. |
