Topic: Zeppelin is on a Rush... Posted: December 20 2008 at 12:25 |
Both released the same year, and they're one of their finest songs envolved in the Heavy Prog scene. As you may know Zep also went quite proggy through the years, maybe not as Rush, but they did have a progression, checking Houses of the Holy's No Quarter, Physical Graffitti's mellotron use, Presence's Achilles Last Stand. Of course, also IV's Stairway to Heaven or When the Levee Breaks....
Which one do you prefer?

Not really a good comparison - 2112 is a side-long epic 100% prog, while Achilles Last Stand is only an extended simple song. Knowing this is a prog site the result of the poll is obvious.
However my vote goes for Achilles Last Stand - for its mature song-writing and technical proficiency, its intensity and all those passionate live versions.

^I think it's a great comparison, even if the results are obvious. It's when both bands became to the maturity to write some heavy stuff with prog leanings. Of course, Caress of Steel had already 2 epics, but I wanted to make it more interesting, at least for me.

Achilles Last Stand. It's more epic despite being 10 minutes shorter. And don't you mean " which SONG do you prefer"? If not, then you mean the album "Presence", don't you? The 2112 album is overall better than Presence, but the song "Achilles Last Stand" is better than the song "2112".

As much as Achiles is probably my 2nd favorite Zep song, the 'dotentree is right, 2112 is still an amazing flight (through space)

As much as I love Zeppelin I had to vote for Rush this time. Achilles last stand is great but not as much as 2112 in my opinion. The only criticism I would do to 2112 is Geddy's voice wich gets annoying at some points, although I got used to it by now, but I still prefer his later voice. Even thoug Plant sings very high too, his voice rarely gets annoying.

has someone been playing with their Neil Peart wind-up today... lost count on all the Rush polls I've seen today. hard to vote... both are popular.. but both still suck in comparison to earlier works....

"2112" in my opinion is one of the Rush tracks I truly enjoy, containing the use of reocurring themes and interesting lyrics based on one of my favorite books. "Achilles Last Stand" was a dissapointment to me, because I assumed because it was a long song it must have been good, but it didn't prove to be much more than a long song.
I don't expect Achilles to stand a chance.

I know my choice will surprise many, but - even though I love Rush - I've never been a big fan of "2112". Therefore, I voted for "Achilles' Last Stand", one of my favourite Zep songs ever. Presence, in my opinion, is a very underrated album, featuring some real gems.

I'll vote Zep, but Presence in its time was a huge disappointment for me. I had hoped for better from them, but it was not to be.
