In his continuing efforts to stabilise the site, and make visiting it an enjoyable and trouble free experience, M@x has identified that very large threads are contributing to the issues currently being experienced.
As a result, threads with more than 4000 responses have been closed and hidden.
Please accept the apologies of M@x for this, he does appreciate the popularity of these threads. Post counts will not be affected by this action.
It goes without saying that new threads on the same topics may be started to continue the discussion. Please note though that in future it is likely that when a thread reaches 4000 posts, it will be locked and hidden automatically to safeguard the site performance.
This measure will be in place until further notice, but hopefully will not need to be permanent.

Thanks Bob - as I just told Max, it's no problem at all to simply close and re-start threads with more frequency if that helps site performance.

^^thanks to Max and Bob for all the time and effort you have put into resolving these issues....it is very greatly appreciated, and this seams to be a relatively small price to pay for our continued enjoyment...

It is a good think that post counts won't be affected because hiding all the Velvet Room/Suede Room threads would probably make James a n00b again.

Anyway .... it's kind of logic that thread with too much replies are closed because the main subject of discussion is often not more the subject discussed after 1000 posts anyway.
So as a performance best practices and a better organization of our topics and threads, it's an overall improvement to the site and forum. Thanks for your understanding and continuous support Max |

Of course most of these threads are no longer topic discussions, but general purpose chat rooms ... the *perfect* solution would be to automatically delete old posts, so that only the - for example - 2000 most current posts remain.

I would have thought we did that around page 2. All those mentions of bodily emissions must have offended someone.

Interesting, those who generate popular threads are now on notice, don't become too popular. Now if we could just do something about those annoying multi-colored quote balloons. I think they're the real problem here.

I don't mind if they will be closed. Easy to start the new one. But hidden? For example, "All prog from Italy appreciation" thread besides endless micky's "hahaha" contains lots of discussions and recommendations which can be helpful for a long time.
I don't want that and similar threads to be hidden.

Is it me, or the site works much better now? Really, everytime I click on PA forum it ALWAYS appeared, the first time, Time Expired, etc...
It's ok to me, if it's for the good of the site, I don't care |

Could do what we did at anther site to conserve bandwidth and speed up the site, and to lessen the clutter of chat type posts/ threads that seemed to have a negative effect on more in-depth discussion, have chit-chat in a chat room. Perhaps easy to see links to a chat room would be a good idea (we used fef.net) -- at least temporarily. Can see why it wouldn't be considered a good idea here. At some boards chat type threads and posts are discouraged, and off-topic posts like "Cool avatar" will get you a warning, and are considered spam. Limits on posts per day, as well as less frequent intervals, is quite common -- an anti-spamming function. Edited by Logan - August 11 2008 at 17:21 |
