I love them both so much, amazing prog epics. I think I partially made this poll because I can't decide which I like better... "I get up I get down" is classic, and so is "Soon" at the end of Gates, and both epics bristile with so much energy in the first seven or eight minutes...

So will it be the classic or its less popularized successor?

I'm not including TFTO on here because thats for an entirely different discussion.

Let's see...

CTTE is boring and pretentious.

Gates of Delirium is powerful and inspiring.

Gee, I wonder which I'm going for?

I never liked the random two-minute church organ solo in CTTE myself...

but Gates drags on for a little too long in the 8-14 minute range on pretty much the same thing... its very dense and does get a little hard on the ears after all that time, for me anyway.

Oh man, but the intro to CTTE with the synth nature effects is fantastic... first prog i ever heard so it strikes a chord deep in me still.

Thats tough.  Hmmm, Close to the Edge is a very awesome track, but I lose interest at the "I get up, I get down" section. Gates of Delerium, man that song just flat out rocks, I'm not a big fan of the soon section though :-/. So each song has its strengths and weaknesses. But all in all I'll go with "Gates of Delerium" cause its got the pedal steel guitar and you can't beat that.

I'm for BILL GATES OF DELIRIUM! :-)

The part named SOON is my favorite musical piece ever!!!! (not only by Yes). I don't know any other track where Anderson, Howe and Squire performed so brilliant!

I bought Relayer last week, and i love Gates of Delirium sooooo much, its like one of my top5 songs of all bands, the most beautiful one anyways...

I think it's kinda funny though, i just read through the CTTE reviews and 50% said the title song would be perfect  and now it gets raped by GOD (isnt that a nice shortcut?) so badly ...

Well it IS a tough call because they're both fantastic. But Gates of Delirium gets my vote simply because I find it a much more captivating listen, but tastes change! I have to say that I love the Soon section of the song: probably one of the best ballad-ish songs Yes ever did!

I think 'CTTE' is more accessable as a Yes epic but of late I find myself more drawn to 'Gates', especially the live version on the Yesshows album.

The Relayer line-up of yes is HUGELY underrated.

If I can't vote for AWAKEN, then it has to be CTTE. Not that Gates is bad, but sometimes I've suffered the ocasional yawn before the Soon part starts...

Awaken would have been my second choice.

I'll opt for GOD because as a whole it's got more going on in terms of Guitar/Synth , and the victory fanfare at the end of the battle section is a superb bit of synth/Guitar/Bass virtuosity !

I personally prefer Close to the Edge.  Wakeman's solo is amazing, and this song is from the first YES album that i bought, so it has extra sentimental value.  I love Gates too though, especially the version on the Symphonic DVD with the orchestra.  Its such a shame that Wakeman doesn't play this song!

Tough...my two fave Yes songs. In the end, for me, Close to the Edge edges out Gates. I love the dark, violent, and urgent sound of Gates, but the mystique and beauty of CTTE gets me every time: How the intro starts, the amazing guitar, the eratic singing, the grandness in Wakeman's playing, the balance of Bruford and Squier: ALL PERFECTION. Although Gates is an amazing song,  i feel the " i get up, i get Down" section of CTTE is far more powerfull than the "soon" section. Also, for me this is Wakeman at his best: first we get the amazing atmospheric keyboard in the intro, then; the moving church organ solo, followed by the synth solo (with Steve Howe on "wah") and we're not finished yet: another amazing keyboard showcase follows. The greatest Yes song.

I will say something very impertinent: to me, and to me only, Yes without Wakeman is like analcoholic beer: might have the flavour, but it's not the real stuff .
Please forgive me for my crappy english!

Wakeman is a great traditional soloist, but Moraz
with his experience with the swiss ballet can do
anything. Dont fool yourself when Jon and Vangelis
couldnt get it right that was a blessing. Patrick is
much more talented here setting soundscapes and
atmospheres, something Rick failed at terribly on
TFTO. This is as good as they got!

I'm not questioning the musical abilities of Moraz, it is just that I get used to a deteminate Yes sound and the one on Relayer is not my cup of tea. That's all.
