I voted for 61+. There's over 11 000 titles here on this site. Of course there's a lot of 80's crap and best of's etc...

I probably own under 10% of these titles. Among the ones I own I'd rate ca. 50 of them with 5 stars. Logicly there should be well over a hundred albums here that deserve the five stars, from my point of view.

This is a more complex issue than merely coming up with a ball park figure.
I have mixed feelings.
On the one hand there are many, many albums on the archive that have a five star rating that should only be 4 stars.
On the other hand Prog Bands have produced many masterpieces.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that....

^ Let's say that I think there are 500 really good prog albums. That number can't be too high, considering that there are 2000+ bands in the archives. In the archives I have two stars (4 and 5) to choose from. According to the guidelines I should rate them something like this:

5 stars: 25 albums (5%)
4 stars: 475 albums (95%)

Ok ... I don't like this. Why? Simply because 95% of my albums are lumped into one big mass. I want to separate the really great ones from the good ones! Like that:

5 stars: 25 albums (5%)
4.5 stars: 150 albums (30%)
4 stars: 325 albums (65%)

In the archives I can't do that - so I'll write in the review "4.5 stars" and give it 5 stars. That's why with the current rating system people simply cannot be that greedy with 5 stars. Many albums are simply too good to punish them with 4 stars, even if they're not absolutely timeless masterpieces.

I hold a very high standerd for the word masterpiece and there are only ten or so albums that are that good. Prog is hard (some of it) and I think very few got it right.

Agreed!
I always put the 4.5 albums up to 5...if I didn´t I think there would be just three or four 5 stars albums in my rewiews!

I don't think you can give a number of masterpieces. One album can be considered a masterpiece by someone and someone else might think it's bollocks Tongue

I think there are more masterpieces than 61, hence I voted for 61+.

The more you learn about prog the more masterpieces you find.

P.S. I am not talking about ratings in PA or anywhere else - just about masterpieces of progressive music in my understanding of this term.

It depends of the albums you have listen to. I have around 450 cds, so I only can say that between 21 and 30 are masterpieces, but I understand that people who hear more music like me could believe this is a short number.

It's personal and depends among other things on how many records you know. I have some 200 CD's and know some 100 more. I would guess 5-10 of them are masterpieces. I tend not to overplay these albums so i keep enjoying them. A lot more are excellent of course. If these records are also to be counted as masterpieces than 61+ is ok with me.

But if you do know 61+ masterpieces than you'll need a category of super masterpieces i think.

I see from the other posts that many have taken the poll as meaning a guess as to how many masterpieces exist among all the albums on PA. 61+ might well be right then, i have no idea how many i've missed.

This is obviously dependent on how many albums you know...
I'd like to add that I think many reviewers are a bit too easy with dealing out 5 stars on albums. If people throw 5 stars-ratings out on all the albums they like, it'll end up being meaningless in the end.

Jesus never managed to figure out the theremin either
