 Topic: Fish vs Jon Anderson

Well I don`t think this has been done , one of the other forum members mentioned it and it got me thinking who is the better lyricist out of these two blokes ?
Heres some random examples of their work
Anderson:
"Dawn of Light lying between a silence and sold sources/chased amid fusions of in moments hardly seen forgotten/colored in pastures of chance dancing leaves cast spells of challenge/amused but real in thought we fled from the sea"
Fish :
So here I am once more in the playground of the broken hearts ,one more experience,one more entry in a diary self penned. Yet another emotional suicide overdosed on sentiment and pride. Too late to say I love you Too late to re stage the play, Abandoning the relics in my playground of yesterday.
so since Peter Gabriel is kicking Jon Anderson's butt in the other poll ( see the results so far ?) maybe this will be a closer competition ...

Yes - Fish. Anderson's lyrics are often random nonsense. Fish's lyrics on Fugazi are immense.
Also, not as technically pure a voice but a nicer tone and far more emotion in Fish's singing.
Wait till the Yes fanboys put in their usual bloc votes, though. Fish will soon fall far behind.

Here I am quoting myself from the best lyricist poll:
I vote for Fish. A man who, when at his best, can write very personal lyrics and yet everyone can relate to them. He covers both love and lost, war and peace, personal and global questions. Sometimes he gets a littel bit carried away and maybe overdoing it - some things on Fugazi, for example, is a little to much for me. Fish is at his best when heīs toned down.

Jon Anderson's strength is not in his lyrics, but in his vocals. That's something completely different.

Somehow, sometimes I don't even understand what on earth is Anderson singing about. In that sense, I vote for Fish, even though I remember that many years ago I used to read his lyrics with a dictionary in my hand (not a native English speaker).

comparing fish with anderson is like comparing fish with meat! Jon is
not only way too an accomplished musician that melody-lacking fish, but
also one of the most influential names in prog rock. well if its lyrics
that determines who's the better musician-- I would have thrown away my
CD player and resorted to reading lyrics only.

Everything you have said about Jon Anderson can equally be applied to
Fish. No one is judging who the better musician is, we're just
comparing the two a deciding who we think the better lyricist is. For
me that's Fish, without a doubt in my mind.

What's the point?? Both are two great lyricists but IMO they have totally different styles and it's very hard to compare the best moment of Anderson (middle 70's) with the best moment of Fish (late 80's)... Comparing Anderson with Gabriel it's ok but I don't think that Anderson's spiritual poetry could be compare with Fish's introspective super-metaphoric and bitter rhymes...

Seeing as we're comparing things by the scale of 'happiness is stupid', let's put Yes's most tragic song's lyrics on here... Harold Land;

In conversation it could be said,

Well it's not hard to understand,

It's so much more powerful than anything Marillion could ever procure. Anderson could write some VERY moving music. You could almost say it drove an entire generation. Yes were the epitome of flower-power in their golden hour.
It's really not fair to compare Fish and Anderson --- Fish wrote lyrics about introspection and exploring the inner-being (but it was always unhappy...) and Anderson wrote lyrics about the brighter side of life that is overlooked.
A better comparison would be Waters vs Fish (we all know who'd win  ). Time just about makes that poll obsolete.

Fish=dramatic
Anderson=metaphysical, spiritual, whimsical
Each are excellent at what they do.

Chaulk and cheese -- totally unrelated (OK, they're both prog lyricist/vocalists).
Anderson is "best" for Yes, Fish for Marillion.
(Each are inseparable from their bands and music -- neither would "work" in the other's band.)
Just ask: "Who is more popular here these days?" the next time....
