Both are legendary singers, but Peter Gabriel is one of rock's greatest lyricists and that gives him the edge. In many ways, he's the Bob Dylan of prog. Anderson wrote pleasing, stream-of-consciousness lyrics back in the '70s, but he lacked Gabriel's edgy images. Later, PG grew into a fearless lyricist, while Anderson's lyrics have gotten increasingly corny over the years (as he now mostly sings about peace, love, happiness, love, peace and more love). PG, meanwhile, sings about his inner demons and fears and other highly personal, resonating material.

an honest answer I guess hahahah
which is what I'll give..
I'm not a fan of Genesis.. but Gabriel and his lyrics are the only
component of Genesis that I think are better then any facet of what Yes
did. Though I'll add that Anderson's lyrical style worked for
Yes.. and any other style... may have..or my not have. Take
Gabriel and put him in Yes.... total musical perfection... take
Anderson in Genesis and what do you have... I'll leave that answer
hanging....

Gabrie!!!!!!!l, would have been a little tougher if we were talking about Ian Anderson, because IMO Jon is one of the worst lyricist possible, most of his songs say absolutely nothing.

This is more lopsided than the poll between 'Starship Trooper' solo and
'The Knife' solo.
Gotta be Gabriel.

agreed that putting Ian vs Peter (or Laurie vs Peter) ![](smileys/smiley2.gif) ![](smileys/smiley2.gif) would have made the poll much more tougher...

I don't like Anderson's lyrics I like to understand concepts in music and I like there to be a point to what I listen to. Yes is awesome but Gabriel has complex themes in his songs that is almost unbeatable. The only two lyrics that compare are Fish and Peart IMO.

For me, it's all about how the music is presented, and I'm sorry but Jon Anderson and his Hare-Krishna-esque appeal combined with the free-flowing voice and light/airy lyrics that never got frantic and were never under stress really click with me.
BTW there is a lot of meaning in Yes's music; you just have to turn your brain on fully to grasp it. It's really complex but the clues that are left behind give it all away.

Very close.
Jon wrote alot about universal love in most of his songs but I felt Peter had much more diverse
stories which touched on many more thought provoking themes.
