Do you want to get run over by a train or a truck?

Sorry, it's another one of those questions I can't answer

Well, finally, I prefer Gabriel

Both are legendary singers, but Peter Gabriel is one of rock's greatest lyricists and that gives him the edge. In many ways, he's the Bob Dylan of prog. Anderson wrote pleasing, stream-of-consciousness lyrics back in the '70s, but he lacked Gabriel's edgy images. Later, PG grew into a fearless lyricist, while Anderson's lyrics have gotten increasingly corny over the years (as he now mostly sings about peace, love, happiness, love, peace and more love). PG, meanwhile, sings about his inner demons and fears and other highly personal, resonating material.

an honest answer I guess hahahah

which is what I'll give..

I'm not a fan of Genesis.. but Gabriel and his lyrics are the only component of Genesis that I think are better then any facet of what Yes did.  Though I'll add that Anderson's lyrical style worked for Yes.. and any other style... may have..or my not have.  Take Gabriel and put him in Yes.... total musical perfection... take Anderson in Genesis and what do you have... I'll leave that answer hanging....

Gabrie!!!!!!!l, would have been a little tougher if we were talking about Ian Anderson, because IMO Jon  is one of the worst lyricist possible, most of his songs say absolutely nothing.

Iván

This is more lopsided than the poll between 'Starship Trooper' solo and
'The Knife' solo.

Gotta be Gabriel.

agreed that putting Ian vs Peter (or Laurie vs Peter) would have made the poll much more tougher...

I don't like Anderson's lyrics I like to understand concepts in music and I like there to be a point to what I listen to. Yes is awesome but Gabriel has complex themes in his songs that is almost unbeatable.  The only two lyrics that compare are Fish and Peart IMO.

For me, it's all about how the music is presented, and I'm sorry but Jon Anderson and his Hare-Krishna-esque appeal combined with the free-flowing voice and light/airy lyrics that never got frantic and were never under stress really click with me.

BTW there is a lot of meaning in Yes's music; you just have to turn your brain on fully to grasp it. It's really complex but the clues that are left behind give it all away.

Very close.
Jon wrote alot about universal love in most of his songs but I felt Peter had much more diverse
stories which touched on many more thought provoking themes.

As far as voice, Anderson. But with lyrics, Gabriel takes it.

Is Peter Gabriel the Bob Dylan of prog? I'm not sure that he is. I'm not sure that he isn't.  I'm positive most people think so. How is he the Bob Dylan of prog?

No contest at all - Gabriel wins. I always had problems with Andersons lyrics, I guess there are some lyrics when he´s down at earth but much too often he is in a place a I can´t relate to. Gabriels got it all - depth, humour, wit and social patos, you name it.

Very difficult to compare these two!

In fact, I consider them incomparable, as their talents are so very different. They are both unique singers but as different as the sun and the moon, if that makes any sense. I like them both very much as singers, but as others have already noted above, Gabriel is by far the better lyricist (Mr. Anderson's are quite often complete nonsense to my ears...). that doesn't put him above Mr. Anderson however, as I understood this poll is about their qualities as a singer?

No vote.

Gabriel... I love the Genesis 70's albums with Gabriel and I also love the Yes albums during the 70's but I think that Anderson's lyrics are a little bit pretencious... That's make the difference to me...

Though Anderson has got the better voice in a technical sense, his mystical, airy-fairy lyrics are a good accompaniment to Yes's music and nothing more. His voice is just another instrument in a very tight musical unit. On the other hand, Gabriel is one of the best ever lyricists in prog, and possibly in rock music. He is intelligent, articulate and sensitive, as well as being able to interpret his own words superbly. Anyway, as I wrote yesterday in another thread, his best lyrical output is to be found in his solo work - the fourth album ("Security") being my personal favourite.

I would have said Anderson once upon but I think Gabriel is more unique and plays with words,  he makes a story interesting , expresses his character in a theatrical way thats beautiful in a way he is also very human even when hes pure fantasy hes such an artist,  his lyrics are an extension of his complex bi polar persona , one in which I can identify with .  Jon Anderson is also brilliant with lyrics but I just feel Peter Gabrial has the abilty to make me feel so many emotions  he`s a Genius    << a word I hardly ever use

I was going to say Anderson...hehehe, but after reading this I must agree that Gabriel never stoped the excelletn lyrics, where as Anderson definitly had his great, great moment...but somewhat kinda lost it...

No Antennas, the question is who wrote better lyrics in the 70's.

Iván

Peter writes much more intiguing and thought provoking lyrics.

As far as "voice" is concerned id say anderson is much better then Gabriel but as a singer Gabriel is much better because he uses his voice to tell a story like no one ive ever heard.Clap

Gabriel uses his voice as a vehicle for his lyrics and anderson uses his lyrics as a vehicle for his voice.

definitely Peter.

I love both, but from a strictly musical, vocal standpoint ya gotta go with Anderson. He has much better range and control. Yes Gabriel is great, but he is fairly limited vocally.

Both great, but in my opinion Anderson's voice can be employed as more of an instrument at times. He adds more dynamics to the songs.
