In light of my recent returning fascination with Canterbury prog... I encourage everyone to share their latest spins or discuss particular albums (old & new) right here...

Been spinning a lot of Hatfield, NH, Soft Machine's fourth and bundles, Matching Mole, early Gong & Caravan, Hillage, Khan, Egg's first 2, Zopp, etc...

Anything more obscure in similar vein to any of the artists listed above??

I listened to both of Zopp's records last night and I must say I was underwhelmed; it sounded like the best aspects of 70s Canterbury done in numbers with no original ideas. The vocalist is terrible. Having said that, Dominion was a slight improvement over the debut, and the reason for that was the record company probably told them to inject some pop flavor and make the production more expansive/spacey and what do you know...it worked... barely. Bushnell Keeler is the only track I would throw on a best of Canterbury playlist and happily forget the rest. 

Has anyone else heard the band, and thoughts?

ZOPP       In the Dominion of Canterbury Scene bands, Zopp are one of the best British bands who barely anyone has ever heard of. Zopp may be new to the Canterbury Scene, but they're better than Hatfield & the North, better than National Health, and dare I say it, Caravan are left trailing behind too! Geek

^a bold a statement if there ever was one! I could not disagree more with everything you said, except that they are virtually unheard of.

The only favorable words I can utter are that Zopp CAN be a sign of things to come... hopefully their third album can strike even harder with a perfect balance of originality, experimentation, musicianship and maybe a little... dare I say whimsy.

Zopp took some listens and when someone said they sound like Egg that actually helped me appreciate what was going on there.
I'm pretty stoked about Zopp, Tom Penaguin, De Lorains and The Winstons. All modern bands embracing that canterbury sound.

For someone who adores the first 2 Egg releases, I heard nothing there that reminded me of them. Perhaps I need another listen...do you know which song(s) led you to make that observation? I would be interested.

Yeah...you see, I just can't get into these modern prog bands embracing both the "classics" and the modern pop sound. It all comes off sounding pretentious and samey to me. Sorry

Having said that, we all hear things differently Wink

^Glad you liked them! As for the two first Egg-releases, for me Moving Gelatine Plates two first albums scratches a similar itch (make sure to stop when the totally out of place bonus tracks starts. They ruin the mood). Great, fun, "French Canterbury"

I've discovered that the kind of Canterbury Scene music which appeals to me the most comes from much farther to the east than England's green and pleasant garden county of Kent. Tongue

DE LORIANS     It's back to the future for this oriental band of rising sons who are about as far away from Canterbury's dreaming spires as it's possible to be, although very close musically. Smile


HENRYTENNIS     Banzai! HenryTennis are an instrumental Canterbury Scene band who are almost as far removed from Canterbury as it's possible to be and if you Nippon down to your local record store you're unlikely to find their albums there. Need any more clues as to where HenryTennis are from? They're from the land that first introduced suicide pilots to the world. No, not Saudi Arabia, but Japan, for those with long enough memories. Geek


MOLESLOPE      Be kind to moles as you just never know what hidden treasure you may unearth, but only if you happen to be digging around in Tokyo. Yes, this band of rising sons (and a woman from Tokyo too) are a band I can really dig and they're a welcome improvement over their inspiration and namesakes: Matching Mole. Smile

Discovered Hatfield and the North, Gong , Caravan and Soft Machine in the early to mid 70s.

By the late 70s and early 80s I was buying Robert Wyatt albums. Matching Mole, Egg, Gilgamesh, Soft Heap, and others. Bill Bruford Feels Good To Me seemed to fit in with what people were defining as Canterbury.

Another album that sounds rather Canterbury to me is Michael Giles Progress which features a couple ex members of Caravan. It's an excellent album!

I don't believe that the band Camel agree with being categorized Canterbury...however if you listen to SUPERTWISTER from Mirage and certain pieces from Snow Goose and Moonmadness it is telling. Especially material from Rain Dances. Not only because Richard Sinclair is singing , but also the instrumental pieces reveal those similarities heard in Canterbury bands
