... or nu jazz. Look at them kids go APEsh*t (=the name of the label their debut Not Thight album is released, today). Obviously very hyped very hip and all, on Anderson Paak.'s label - with Thundercat, Herbie Hancock mm. making guest appearances. It's superslick (I don't mind), but they sure know how to play. If this can get a new generation into fusion, I'm happy

Here's one with Kurt Rosenwinkel guesting and playing some nice guitar on top of their grooves

Been following these two for a bit thanks to Zildjian drum expos on YouTube. DOMi is a force! Reminds me of young Hiromi Uehara when she was an up and coming prodigy. JD has his thing (which I love), but DOMi is the man!

Love the guitar and keys, but that bass gets as much of my attention as JD's uniquely syncopated beat! Who dat?

JD's drumming is brilliant (to watch in particular), but rarely sound like its played by a human being. DOMi brings the much needed warmth and playfulness that saves this project, imo. But still, I think they are a great match. I'm glad the album sounds "true" and interesting throughout (at first listen). I really want to catch them live sometime.

I've been trying to find out, but there's no additional info for this track other than Kurt on guitar. I'm sort of guessing Domitille Degalle - who's a producer and knows her way around a studio is responsible for it in one way or another? Maybe it's made with keyboards or perhaps she cna make her feet pedals sound like that? I really don't know about these things.

Glad you enjoyed them! This level of musical talent and well... excellent taste combined at such a young age feels quite rare (these days). Let's hope they are strong enough to stay on this sort of creative path, and not turn too much into a commercial product.

Being a Madlib/MF Doom (RIP)/Madvillainy fan, this tribute is stunning on so many levels.

Yeah, started listening to this yesterday and heard the album three times through already. So remarkable how they already have an original voice and how there is a stylistic through line connecting all the tracks, giving it a cohesion that truly makes it an album and not just a collection of songs.

Cool! I was hoping their modern take on jazz fusion would appeal to some of you here. Maybe it's even something I should suggest for PA. I don't know.

^Don't think the hip hop songs would make PA.

I dig this, JD is a fierce drummer. Keeps things interesting.

^It's not of great importance to me whether they would make PA or not. But it's like 85% complex electric jazzfusion and about 15% hip-hop. Two hip-hop songs out of 15 tracks hardly feel like an actual reason for a no to me. I believe prog can be fused with any kind of music - hip-hop included. Isn't that sort of essential to what prog was all about in the first place? Yes, JD is incredible. They both are.

-on my third listen now and it's getting better with every time. I'll probably spin this more often than the new Black Midi, although I consider Hellfire to be something of a masterpiece. Not Tight is just pure musical enjoyment.
