So, this is does not really belong here, since this is a rock site and not for soul, but I have been thinking for a while about how there is funk/soul music that can be really long at times, and can come in multiple parts. Bands I am talking about are the Isley Brothers and War.

I listened to The World is a Ghetto not long ago, and it absolutly more than a regular "Funk" record. The longer tracks like City, Country, City and the title track have longer solos and unusual structure. A bit more similar to fusion.

I’ve always thought that the term ‘progressive’ applies somewhat differently to ‘soul’ music.  ‘Progressive soul’ may have a more urban meaning/feel to it, maybe deeper thought-provoking aspect.  Yet, still be viewed as ‘progressive’ by the general definition.  Albums like Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On", Kool and the Gang "Light of Worlds" or Curtis Mayfield's 'Curtis'.

There seems to be a trend to add "progressive" as a term for disparate genres that fall outside of the established industry norm. In no way do these genres equate to "progressiveness" in the same sense that prog rock does

Some of my favorite ridiculous terms:

Festival progressive house
Progressive breaks
Progressive country
Progressive bluegrass
Progressive house
Progressive psytrance

There are others but don't expect Yes or Gentle Giant equivalents of the music!

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Just for understanding purpose are you saying that other forms of music (such as country, house , soul, etc.) cannot be Progressive?

I'm not sure what criteria is being used to make a soul song progressive.
I'm reminded of this. Pop and soul are not necessarily the same thing, but this is pretty soulful.

Take The World Is A Ghetto for instance. It has a one minute long opener, some vocals, a really long saxophone solo, and some guitar solo at the end of it with a repeating chorus. I Heart that song.

I would suggest there is such a thing as Progressive bluegrass. I would then suggest that you have no idea what you are talking about in that regard. I would then direct you to Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, the Punch Brothers, Billy Strings, The Goat Rodeo Sessions and Greensky Bluegrass.

As a matter of fact, I've been listening to a lot more of this stuff than most of the alleged prog rock currently being bandied about that is merely a recapitulation of the prog from the 1970s. You know, when the genre was actually "progressive" and not a cough from a coffin.

Progressive soul, year 1970:

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

As far as Progressive Soul, you can include Stevie Wonder in the early to mid-70s, Curtis Mayfield, Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament/Funkadelic, War, Sun Ra, the Isley Brothers, and let's not forget Jimi Hendrix and Band of Gypsys...

Oh i love Bela Fleck & The Flecktones. Totally agree they would qualify as progressive bluegrass. A lot of what i've heard labeled that isn't very progressive to my ears. Will have to check out some of your other suggestions :)

No, i'm not saying they CANNOT, i'm saying that they most often are NOT. At least as far as i've heard.

I mean progressive psytrance? LOL

Im a big bluegrass lover so here a few more progressive bluegrass reccomendations.

It's both... a genre defined for those who actually make a distinction between prog and progressive rock, and need a genre that covers both. Evil Smile
