This just came into my mind... I don't want to start a thread where I am proposing to incorporate Goth Metal bands into the archives, but I was wondering, is Goth Metal considered to be Prog Metal either??? Forgive me if this was discussed before... I really want to recall there are a few bands in the archives that are goth metal and hence considered as prog metal bands. For example: The Gathering, Therion and a few others, which I don't remember (I really don't mind if they are good or not). The point is, if they are considered to be prog, then Goth Metal could be a form of prog metal either... |

Like Kamelot and Nightwish to mention a few??? So, if this is true, then goth metal is believed to be prog metal???

My Dying Bride and Therion are not Gothic Metal. Therion are Symphonic Metal, and My Dying Bride are Doom Metal. |

^ Precisely Mike! Do not confuse "Gothic Metal" with Doom Metal, Extreme Metal or Symphonic Metal.

Another band that's often confused with Gothic Metal: The Gathering. Brilliant ambient/space metal. only their first two albums have folk influences, which are mistaken for Gothic.

Goth metal's definition in my opinion is the Zoon album from Nefilim. The goth roots begin in another music territory that has nothing to do with progressive music after all.Even though there are some bands i enjoy they wouldn't fit too well here....When a group has a dark feeling doesn't mean that you're listening to goth

I was sure that someone would complain about that statement ... and you're right. I would describe My Dying Bride as Emo-Doom ... or Doomcore, something like that. But more Doom than Gothic.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_metal the English wikipedia lists My Dying Bride as a Gothic Metal band ... http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_Metal the German version lists them as a Death/Doom band which was kind of "Proto-Gothic". BTW: Both pages list many bands which are not Gothic IMO ... The Gathering,After Forever, Epica etc. What do you think: Are all the Beauty and the Beast (Female vocals/grunts) metal bands automatically Gothic Metal? IMO necessary elements of Gothic Metal are religious/esoteric lyrics and medieval sounds. |

Prog does not fit a specific genre, and truly progressive artists within any genre can create progressive rock. A good example is Yes. Their first album is hardly prog rock. Prog Rock *simply* has to be progressive, i.e. have enough progressive elements that the music is no longer a precise fit for whichever genre the music emerged. What constitues "enough" is a matter for debate or conjecture largely - but a dedicated committee with the aid of enough outside consultation could rationalise it to fit the needs. Prog is not black and white, after all, but a colourful collection of influences from a multiplicity of genres. That is in itself a progressive element. Many genre names these days seem a very poor fit, and anyone can contribute to Wikipedia - so I really would not take its' word for anything. Especially Prog Rock. |

I've never considered gothic metal to be progressive. As many of us know, many bands have progressive influences but are not really progressive. Dark Tranquillity could be considered to be progressive, well until Chracter because they had an unconventional style and tonality to their metal, but Dark Tranquillity isn't a full on progressive band.
