Im reading the Mojo Classic and my King Crimson box set about him.  Seems he was viscous, not a very nice guy to his band members...perhaps thats why there were so many break ups?  Any insight on the issue from some hard crimsos??

Thanks!

Fripp's got a reputation for being rather a cold individual and that comes across in his interviews. I wouldn't say KC had many "break ups" though. KC was and always will be Fripp's own band and he picks and chooses who joins the ranks, just like Ian Anderson does with Jethro Tull. I don't think there's much wrong with that per se.

He most likely did that thru' jealousy. I mean, Fripp couldn't come up with a melody if his life depended on it!

Is he an asshole? YES!

Fripp may have been an ass at times, but he's certainly no donkey in his field.

I hope it was Boz.  Who was it?

What ever his personality is like, I appreciate the music he has done, and I regard him as one of the best guitarplayers.

There are now three fairly current threads about how Fripp is an ass. I've
really got to get together with him for tea and crumpets to commisserate.

I read in Q magazine that he is tone deaf. Amazing!

Also, I've never seen a picture of him smiling. Isn't that a bit scary?

Hello.

You should read Sid Smith his book about King Crimson, very revealing about Robert Fripp his personality. Many people had very bad experiences with his often bad tempers, his urge for control and his depressions (he often refused to communicate). In my opinion he is a person with several faces, from friendly and supportive to passive-agressive and narrow-minded. But on the guitar he was a genius and very innovative!

Best regards,

Erik Neuteboom.

Tone deaf?

Yeah, I guess that figures....

I think Fripp just thinks he is better and more important than he really is, and through some process of black magic has managed to convince his fans likewise. I always knew he had a demonic quality..

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I have a mate who's tone deaf. He never listens to music and doesn't own any music at all. If we go to see some music and have to clap, he has to look at the other people to know when to clap. Either Fripp is not really tone deaf or he is not as tone deaf as my mate.

You know what, it seems that often creative genius and a difficult character (to say the least) go together. If you read the biographies of some great writers, classical composers or artists, you'll see things that make Fripp's behaviour seem quiet and friendly... Unfortunately, very talented people can be self-centred and manipulative of other people - but this is also true of people who have absolutely no talent at all and who are just big-headed.

To be serious, for one second, I very much doubt Fripp is tone deaf. If you are tone deaf then you have no idea what melody or harmony are. Five notes harmonising in a chord would just sound like a meaningless noise to you. Thats my understanding of 'tone deaf' anyway.

I may take the p!ss out of Fripp, but I find it unlikely that someone who is tone deaf would devote their life to a career making progressive rock! How on Earth could he write songs if he is unable to tune his guitar, play chords and write melodies..

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

You're absolutely right. Q must have made a mistake here surely.
