A little short...

5 stars From the loud spooky Mellotron intro of "Watcher of The Skies", you know you're in for a very special experience! The intensity just does not let up, the exaggerated dynamics are jaw-dropping and the aura is nothing short of magical!

(Anyone's Daughter, Requested Document Live #1)

The reviewer says:

Come on! Five stars! You'd never believe that a relatively sedate symphonic-melodic prog outfit like this could rip it up live. Oh, but they can. All the versions of their signature track completely blow the roof off, and Uwe Karpa gets to show off his chops. He is a very imaginative player, not simply a Blackmore wannabe, as maybe the early albums suggest. Again, it's a pleasure to hear everything, or almost everything, in German. Presumably it is all of the soundboard, as many of the venues AD played back then weren't exactly arenas... don't start your AD collection here, but it's still a great album. Even the monumentally boring Adonis works!

but gives the album 4 stars4 stars

I can't tell if it's a fair stance to take on an album, that the humor does not appeal to you and thus: two stars. The reviewer states that the music is great, the playing impressive, but then justifies his low rating with a long complaint about two or three passages and one song. Good thing it's not up to me if it's a passable review or not. I'll just throw it in here and see what y'all do with it...

^ I think it's a great review. Coincidentally, yesterday it was the first time I listened to this album and my feelings are quite the same (the music is quite retro for my tastes but has impressive qualities in a few moments, the "fun" parts are quite lame". I appreciate Fuxi's effort to translate his not liking of this album by a well thought, even encouraging review... Way different than the regular bashers we have here. One may like what Fuxi dislikes, but no one can say he was not fair to them.

I don't quite understand this...but it seems when someone reviews an album, this Discopgraphia person is right behind them with a review that's barely readable.

Someone posted a 5 star review of Octopus today, and there's a 2 star review by this guy.
Someone posted a 3 star review of Silent Knight recently, and there's a 4 star review by this guy.
Someone posted a 4 star review of Lizard, and there's a 4 star review by this guy.
Someone posted a 1 star review of Genesis just now, and there's a 2 star review by this guy.

I realize this may not be abuse per se, but it's a pattern I think I saw yesterday, and it might be worth checking into- the English isn't so hot either...

I think he's just using the PA front page to decide which albums to review next.

If you think so, okay.  I just found it very weird, that's all.

This guy appears to be at it still...

And you are right about the Beardfish review. Rereading it, it was a lot more sensical than it was the first time through. Hm. Actually not a bad review, and taking the time of your review to address a facet of an album that lots of people have reviewed but none have dwelt on is a good idea... Oops. My apologies.

Out of curiosity, does someone moderate the ratings?  For instance, let's say someone joins on one day and decides to give one star ratings to a whole slew of just recently released albums, while giving 5 star ratings to every Pink Floyd album.   Then, let's say another person joins that same day and gives 1 star ratings to some just released albums and several 5 and 4 star ratings to every Pink Floyd album.   It seems a little fishy, but of course, there's no way to really know that.  I'm sure these Pink Floyd fans are just very offended by a slate of new releases (after careful consideration).

I'm sure it would be quite hard to moderate and keep track of all people who rate and what would be the criteria to think something was rotten in Denmark?   I certainly don't know.

Ha, look one post above you, dude... Yeah, I think this is one guy, and he's been doing it for a long time. Someone posted a huge list of people who followed that exact same trend. If it is indeed the same guy as it has been, he's lavished Pink Floyd and humbugged new albums from, what, at least twenty accounts? Each one may be banned, but then another reappears...

Is he picking on Number Seven?

EDIT: possibly here too? http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=25012

That's why ratings only (i.e., no review) mean almost squat.  Anyone who rates an album with say, more than five reviews, isn't making much of an impact.

I've got a rating from someone I'm fairly sure hasn't even heard my album...but luckily his rating doesn't mean much in the long run.

But don't worry...I'll give your new album the one star rating it rightfully deserves.  TongueWink

thank you Epi!   I am sure to do the same for your fine release!  Emoticons  And, of course, the only right and proper thing would be for us both to give our own albums 5 star ratings, no?  In fact, if I wrote a detailed review of my own album, that might bump up the overall rating -- assuming it didn't end up here in abuse section~!

EDIT:  Honestly, as an fledgling artist, it is fun to check the reviews/status of our album to get a litmus test of what folks think of it.  You see somone rates it high, you see what else they rate high.  You see someone rates it low, you get a sense of what they like/don't like from their other ratings/reviews.

I especially enjoy reviews when someone identifies what they don't like about our album.    Sometimes, they have a good point, sometimes the very things they don't like are the things we do like.   So, it's all personal taste.

However, when you see a rating that seems to come out of left field, it can be maddening.  Of course it doesn't mean that much.  And of course, wars are fought day in and day out on this planet of ours.  In the grand scheme of things...

However, when one assumes everyone to have integrity and to be earnestly trying to present a quorum of opinion on various releases, it can be disheartening when someone seemingly rates indiscriminately.

^ As someone who dabbles in creating music I don't believe a word of what you say - we're never 100% happy with what we produce and often only hear the faults and blemishes. LOL

I know that Epignosis mentioned this review earlier but I thought I'd link it because it's worth reading.  If anyone can make sense of this let me know.
