Downloaded Hogarth & Barbieri's new project, Not The Weapon But The Hand, from Amazon this evening, and have it on now.

I think it's safe to say that it will require a number of listens before I can review it, but I like what I hear on first listen, and feel it will be a grower.

It will be interesting to see what others have to say about it.

I think you will like it Scott. As with Edison's Children, this is not a Marillion album in tone or structure, but rather a very interesting addition to the growing cannon of the band's side projects.

There are, perhaps inevitably, definite traces of Hogarth's Ice Cream Genius that I hear.

And tying in nicely with the above posts, the latest e-bulletin from Mr H:

28 February 2012- Update From Mr H

You CAN be too careful..
Mike Hunter is in bed with the lurgy so there has been an unexpected hiatus in the fine-tuning of song arrangements. This gives us a chance to work individually from home which, in my case, means I can have a look at my lyrics again and try and get in amongst the essence.. (Not the 400 word description..). I'm also working at home on a new song about Paris, which may or may not see the light of day depending on whether the band get excited about it.. Sounding good so I'm sure it will turn up somewhere..

We're all conscious of the year ticking away and we'll have this new baby for you as soon as health, inspiration and quality-control allows! It'll be June before we know it and we'll be on the road in the USA. Getting the visas has involved jumping through a lot of hoops and we're not there yet. You wouldn't believe the amount of personal information, aggravation and expense that is required. If they're happy, we'll be granted an interview in London and we'll all (band and crew) have to queue outside the American Embassy from 7.30 am until we're let in. Last time, Mark was almost arrested (by the British cops) for standing in line wearing a hoodie. Ah the glamour! Still, we know you'll be more than worth it, and we still owe you for that American tour-fund which spawned our "better way of life" and everything that followed. Let's hope we're allowed back in!

Officially released worldwide yesterday "Not The Weapon But The Hand" by Steve Hogarth and Richard Barbieri will be available as a digital download on iTunes today. This version will have an additional brand new song "Intergalactic" which is not part of the CD version. As a thank you to all who pre-ordered the special pack from Racket Records we have sent you a link which enables you to download "Intergalactic" for FREE. There are atoms inside you from the edge of the Universe y'know. Can you feel em?

Love and neutrinos

Steve H

I've just heard a few songs off of YouTube, but I already adore this album. I can't even properly put into words what a perfect combination Hogarth and Barbieri make. This is exactly what I hoped it would be; they ought to do more together.

Holidays In Eden is the only Marillion LP that I have reviewed/rated as less than three stars - two in this case.

I've put in on now, on a whim really, for the first time since I wrote that review. It doesn't get played that often, but listening to it, I'm really enjoying every second, and feel I was perhaps too harsh.

I don't know whether it is because I am reacquainting myself with an old album which doesn't get played very often, or that it really isn't as bad as I remember it, and I really didn't like it at all upon release, whereas its predecessor, Seasons End, I thought was a classic and cemented the new era in my heart.

I still think it is the poorest of the H era, that won't go away.

But, what are others thoughts on this one?

Edison's Children is now streaming the entire album "In The Last Waking Moments..." on http://www.progstreaming.com until Monday for free. They've also lowered the price on the CD if you buy it from then this weekend by 2 bucks. WooHoo!

To be honest I'd be more inclined to say Radiation is the worst of the H-era. And even that one has a lot to love about it.

Thank you Smile.
Honestly, when I returned here about a month or so ago I was shocked how badly written my "old reviews" were ( I had only reviewed BJH and related discs in about 2006 and I wasn't online by then, wrote "scripts" at home, went to the internet-cafe and typed ! them in - no copy and paste with USB-stick or so cause I had no clue about that lol... always in a hurry cause the money was scarce... lol ) and I hope I made up for that with my Marillion reviews ( not for people who love "Fugazi", though, I guess and not for people who think of "AOS" as a masterpiece either but tastes are different...
honestly, AOS was MY lowpoint of H-Era but the remaster is really better and I still haven't got into "The hard Shoulder" yet - right now this is my least favourite Marillion-Album while I wholeheartedly love "Essence" ! ).
I'm proud of my Supertramp-reviews, especially the one for "Famous last words".

Cheers
Roop

I've enjoyed reading all of your Marillion-reviews so far, in particular I like your different views in comparism to mine and think it's quite amazing where we meet because of different reasons very often.
You finally make me check out if I can somehow get "Anorak Live" in the 2-disc-version and "At the walls".
I'm curious of what you'll be writing about "Marbles" and, especially, "Marbles live".
Is "Brave Live 2002" really as good as the studio-album ???
Especially the beginning is so hard to be nailed with "Living with the Big Lie".
Though I raved about the version on the "Lap of Luxury"-Maxi in the Singles Box even that one left me slightly dissatisfied lately...
and... do you think I should get me "Size Matters" and "Tumbling down the years" as well ?
Thanks anyway for your interesting views and reviews,
a pleasure to read,
always.

Cheers
Roop

As for Brave Live 2002 - I'd say that of all the live versions out there, it's the one which is most comparable in quality to the studio album. Obviously there's differences - the studio album has studio-quality pristine sound, but Brave Live 2002 has this awesome live ambience to it, plus like I say in the review it's the band revisiting the material with five years of experience playing it under their belts and so they really nail each of the songs.

As for Marbles, Size Matters, and Tumbling Down the Years... you'll have to wait and see. :) I'm on this big project where I go through my entire music collection listening to everything in order (and reviewing things which are reviewable on PA/MMA/JMA as I go), and I do have all the remaining Marillion studio albums and most of the live albums they're released aside from the Front Row Club stuff on the schedule. :)

I'm so excited with the Suth AMerican Marillion tour... back in 1997 I didn't even knew music existed... well, probably only The Beatles and that stuff. Marillion is really really awesome live, always was.

Tickets booked for the Manchester gig Wink.  Isn't it great when your missus also likes MarillionSmile.

I find Holidays In Eden easily the poorest of the H-era albums that I have.  It shares the weak production of the earlier albums but whilst the likes of Brave has great material to rescue it, HIE doesn't (to me anyway).

I'm really enjoying the last two albums and if the new one is on a par with those I'll be a happy chappy.

Hey, if I order from Marillion.com, will I need British pounds? Cause I'm American and not sure how that works with payment transfer between the currencies.
