My take on the pecking order of Fish-era live stuff:

6: Curtain Call - Pretty rare these days and to be honest the three shows collected on there don't really measure up to Loreley/Recital/Early Stages. It's the only Fish-era live release which wasn't done through EMI, so I suspect EMI might have sat on the real cream of the crop for their own releases.
5: The Thieving Magpie - If you want a live version of Misplaced Childhood, you've got one on disc 2 so that's a plus. Disc 1 has a good selection of songs but they're all jumbled together from a bunch of different shows so it feels a little disjointed.
4: Real to Reel - Not a complete show, and indeed the two halves are taken from two different shows on the Fugazi tour, but they're edited together more or less seamlessly and as a snapshot of the Fugazi-era band it's pretty good.
3: Recital of the Script* - absolutely killer Script-era set.
2: Live From Loreley* - Fish on his last tour with the band going out on a very high note indeed.
1: Early Stages - very reasonable price, you get five shows for your money and some of them - like the Reading Festival appearance - are absolute classics.

* When it comes to these two I strongly recommend the recent 2CD remasters of them which present the complete shows.

I am still exploring and forming up my opinions on Hogarth-era live material so I'll leave it to others to comment.

Latest e-bulletin from the chaps below. I'm starting to get itchy and want this new album now!!

9 february 2012- A Week AT Real World

Happy New Year! Oh - we already did that...well Happy February! We know we've been quiet so far this year but there is lots going on behind the scenes.

We've just come back from another successful week at Real World Studios. It's a fantastic place to work with a great atmosphere. Most studios (including the Racket Club) consist of a Studio room, where the band set up and play and a Control Room where the recording equipment and mixing desk are situated. This is normally where the producer is located too. Real World has such a big Control Room that there is plenty of space for the whole band and the producer to set up without the need for a separate live room. The drum kit can get a bit loud at times, spilling over into the guitar and vocal mics but it's worth it for the improved working environment, especially when we need to talk a lot about what we are doing.

Last week we spent the first 3 days finalising the arrangement for just one song. One longish song. This is the first time that it felt like we were coming to the end of the writing and arranging. In the past there was always a point where we would stop writing and start recording. These days we are recording all the time so any performance that's captured while trying out arrangements could end up on the finished album. We have 8 songs that all deserve to be on the album. Usually one or two don't quite live up to expectations but we will record all 8 as you can never tell until they are nearly finished which ones, if any, won't make it.

In other news - Towards the end of this month, we will be launching our new website - it's a new, wider, all singing, all dancing, interactive piece of technology and we hope you'll enjoy exploring.. it's as deep as ever so wear your diving gear..

Lucy's been working hard fixing more tour dates for the rest of the year - the first bunch including North and South America, Scandinavia, Germany and Holland are already announced at www.marillion.com/tour with more dates being added soon (including the UK and Europe). Keep checking the website for updates and follow us on Facebook for day to day updates.www.facebook.com/MarillionOfficial. Rest assured we are trying to visit as many of you as we can - if we don't make it this year then we will try our best for 2013 - please bear with us!

We know a lot of you are already asking about our bi-annual Marillion weekends (www.marillionweekend.com) - well, we can tell you there will be three taking place in early 2013 and we will be announcing the dates and venues in April this year.

We hope that within the next few weeks we will be able to tell you the name of our new album and also release details of a special pre-order initiative we have been working on. We know that you're dying to hear the new music but we won't share it with you until we're absolutely ready. But know this - it's different, and it's killer.

Soon, the winter will be over..

H, Ian, Steve, Mark and Pete

They're playing the Manchester Academy again which is great news.  I had tickets but missed them last time due to very bad family news on the afternoon of the gig.  I'll be there this time I'm sure.

Steve, nice to see they're playing a bit nearer you this time.  How far away is Cardiff from you?

I also notice mention of the Marillion Weekends, with apparently three of them next year to be announced formally in April.  Never been to one of those.  I can imagine that is one hell of an experience, count me and the missus in for next year if there's one in the UK Smile.

Enjoy Manchester, Rog!

Cardiff is about 50 miles from me, so is easily doable. Can't wait.

The Marillion weekends are normally held now in Holland & Canada, but last year they also held a sort of "mini" weekend in England, so I imagine this will be the same.

I have spent the last year or so listening to a lot of Marillion. Some of that time was spent revisiting old favorites like Cluthing At Straws. However, quite a bit of that time was spent reevaluating some releases that I never really cared much for. I was never much of a fan of Fugazi and Afraid Of Sunlight. Both are flawed and uneven, however I have grown to really like both. Others releases, Brave, that I liked in the past I now love. I even got turned on to some releases that I had never heard before like Marbles. Anyway, here are my top 10 favorite Marillon releases.

1 Cluthing At Straws - My first exposure to the band back in 1987 and still my favorite.

2 Script For A Jester's Tear - Loved it than, love it now.

3 Brave - When it was first released I found it unlistenable. It took me about two years to really get into Brave. For years I liked it, it's not until recently that I really fell in love with this one.

4 Misplaced Childhood - Many fans favorite, never mine. However, as I get older I appreciate it more and more.

5 Holdiays In Eden - The first Hogarth era release that I was able to get into. It was not until after Brave was released that Holidays began to sink in for me.

6 Season's End - I hated this one when it first came out! I had just discovered the band and than Fish was gone. I tried so hard to like this one when I first purchased it, I so wanted to like it. I forced myself to try and like it. It took some time. Brave was almost the third strike for me, however once I got into Holdiays in Eden, Season's End was next. For years now Season's End has been amoung my faves by the band.

7 Fugazi - Still not a big fan of Punch and Judy. Overall this release has the worst production of any Marillion release that I've heard. For years I disliked this cd so much, a perfect example of a sophmore slump. However, upon revisting it last year I discovered that it's not so bad. It is obviously the least of the Fish era releases and the most unoriginal. All that being said it ain't a bad release after all.

8 The Official Bootleg Boxset Vol 2 - What a great set this is. The live Brave set is great. Apart from hearing Kayleigh and Lavender, this was my first real chance to hear Hogarth sing Fish era songs. He does a servicable job, however I'm not sure if anyone but Fish of old could really pull many of those songs off well.

9 Marbles - Years ago I literally gave up on buying anymore Marillion cds after Radiation came out. There was not one song that I liked on Radiation. Last year I listened to a bit of Somewhere Else and Marbles on Marillion's myspace page and thought they were some decent songs there. I have heard nothing of the cds between Radiation and Marbles. I read so much great stuff about Marbles that I broke down and bought it. Glad I did.

10 Afraid Of Sunlight - Did not like this one for years as well. After reevaluating Brave this one was next, and I discovered it ain't bad. I still don't like Cannibal Surf Babe

Tis very unfortunate that I live in the US. And where I live makes it even more sad. When they come here it would be an 8 - 10hour drive to see them.  Fave Album is Afraid Of Sunlight as well as my fav song. Have plenty of other favs too but really, I could go on forever. Love the Fish years too and his solo stuff is brilliant.

My wife is not a fan either. She has, though, been told that she can either stay at home when I see them in Cardiff in September, or come with me.

If you are going to Cardiff watch out for Daleks and the like.  It seems to be a pretty dangerous city for alien visits.

Yep - when aliens want to invade Earth, they naturally seem to congregate in CardiffLOL

There is actually quite a nice Doctor Who exhibition in Cardiff Bay which we enjoyed.

I flew from oregon to montreal last year without the wife.  only 10 hour drive is a HUGE oppourtunity and one that you will regret if you don't go.  tell her it's a "once in a lifetime thing".  kenmar
