Elvin Jones - Elvin Jones is “On the Mountain” This is excellent! The whole album is performed just by a trio and it does not sound like it, the overall sound of it being very full. In my opinion, the definitive highlight of this release is Jan Hammer’s virtuosic keyboard playing with beautiful solo synthesizer timbres and superb piano themes.

Irmin Schmidt - Filmmusik Vol. 2 Irmin Schmidt’s solo material is wonderful – well-crafted and well-performed. Most of the musicians here are his bandmates from Can, yet the album doesn’t sound like the band’s music. Some pieces are approaching the synth-based kosmische territory, while some even bear resemblance to avant-garde music of La Monte Young. Very interesting stuff!

Quiet Sun - Mainstream Love this album. From the piano raindrops opening “Sol Caliente” to the last bars of “Rongwrong”, this album is just nearly perfect. These experienced musicians bring such a fresh approach to the Canterbury sounds we know and love. Remarkable work from every musicians, distinctive compositions, and a wide palette of sonic colors.

Fripp & Eno - No Pussyfooting I admit, I had never gotten around to listening to this album before, it had somehow slipped away from my sight. This is another dreamy album full of striking soundscapes. Robert Fripp’s guitar style and tone is splendid, Brain Eno is extremely effective at what he does. Very enjoyable.

Faust vs. Dälek - Derbe Respect, Alder David, you were right, this is a really good album! It's something really unique, I had not hear anything like this before. On instrumental parts, it’s the industrial music I know, but the spoken words recall some odd future form of hip-hop, but also spiritual jazz of the early 70’s. Great music, thanks so much for the recommendation! By the way, it turns out my Dad really likes Dälek and even had this very album on his iPod. Tongue

Whalephant - Kamma - A very cool recent Russian release. Very dramatic, emotional music in a very modern vein. Sort of art-poppy, sort of post-rocky, all with classic prog influences at the fore. 2016 pick-worthy? Perhaps.

Ichthyander Dad's Only Dolphin - Playing Live At One Music Fest - Some solid eclectic material from these Ukrainian guys. Very good range of styles, from heavy Gentle Giant/King Crimson-like jazz rock to Floydian spacey sections, even a bit of folk and new age here and there. Great soloing, and tight ensemble performances. Very fine stuff!

Moogg - Italian Luxury Style - One that I investigated after seeing it pop up in the 2016 picks discussion. Solid Canterbury/fusion/jazz rock from Italy. Nothing that's really blowing me away, but still very good nonetheless.

Griot - Gerald - The stellar debut by these Portuguese guys. Spectacularly produced, brilliantly played, succinctly delivered. Plenty of beautiful, dreamy sections to entrance and enamour, and all that lovely stuff.

Today:
Eskaton - 4 Visions(Wonderfully well-done, very dynamic album, a masterpiece )
Weidorje - Weidorje(The same as above but a little more slow and atmospheric)
Ruins - Pallaschtom(I'm gonna need some time to digest this one, notable complexity, very abstract music, appears it going to grow into something big)
Dün - Eros(I profundly hate the first track, but ALL the others are simply stunning beautiful and nice, even the bonus one, but my prefered has to be Arrakis)
Ga'an - Ga'an(I'm not impressed by this one AT THE MOMENT, but i'm gonna give it some other listens)
Magma - Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré(first listen right now, what i can say, it's Magma, nothing beats that one band)

That Nuova Idea one is a ton of fun! Love the cover, too. And I guess that Yes album is okay. Wink

L'Heptade is an absolute treasure. Just picked up the 2016 remaster yesterday. I have yet to listen to the new copy, but they could probably maim and butcher the whole thing in post production and Fiori's voice would still make it magical to listen to.

Outlaws! Yee-haw! One of my favourite rock albums of all time right there. It's so hard to believe that they were pulling off material that consistently great on a debut; the thing plays more like a greatest hits compilation than a debut album.

Quiet Sun is another special one. Certainly one of the more original takes on the Canterbury sound that I've heard. And as always, Tymon, you have a real knack for pulling albums apart and reconstructing them faithfully with your words. Thumbs Up

Isn't it? Smile They are actually even listed in my order of preference. I love 4 Visions a lot. I have a strange relationship with Dün, though. I know the music is excellent, but, similiarly to Mahavishnu Orchestra, I just feel so shagged and fagged and fashed after listening to the band, the music seems to take a lot of my energy away. LOL Three great albums nonetheless.

Man, i've the same feeling with Dün, exists something in that album that makes it SO hard to digest, i've already encoutered him since 2014, and only some days ago i've begun to like the music, but the effort was rewarded, is pretty beautiful musicClap

Terry Riley – A Rainbow in Curved Air In my opinion, this album gets everything, every single thing right. Timbrally and tonally, this album is beautiful. Wonderful sounding keyboards, gentle echoed sax, piquant ethnic percussion. For me, A Rainbow in Curved Air is the quintessence of minimalism in music.

Harmonia – Documents 1975 A short, but sweet document of four Harmonia tracks, two recorded in Hamburg, two in the band’s studio in Forst. And this release captures everything I really like about their albums, the music is very hypnotic, motoric, and has that “old, abandoned warehouse” feel to it (can’t think of any other way to put it).

Botany – Deepak Verbera Definitely one of my favorite albums of 2016. The unique blend of influences Botany creates here is very intoxicating. We hear a bit of spiritual jazz a la Alice Coltrane, a bit of free-jazz, a bit of krautrock a la Popol Vuh and Cluster given a fresh approach. Excellent!

Herbie Hancock – Mwandishi One of the classic albums to come out of the Miles Davis school of fusion. As I’ve mentioned sometime ago, I had been giving Herbie Hancock’s music relatively little time and now I’ve been catching up since a few weeks ago. This is some really beautiful music – well composed, well performed, never boring. What else would I want?

C.A. Quintet – Trip Thru Hell  I need more music like this!!! And I’m not talking exactly about the music that takes me for a “trip thru hell” (which this does), but about this very distinctive breed of largely-instrumental obscure late-60’s proto-prog psychedelic rock with loads of combo organ a la early Pink Floyd and funky grooves. This album is fantastic, shame that the original (without the bonus tracks) is so short (29 minutes, whaaaat?).

Can – Tago Mago Out of the three albums Can made between 1971 and 1973, my favorite one tends to be the one that I’ve listened to the most recently. And here it’s no exception. This is a masterpiece, blending terrifically written songs, atonal experimentation, minimalist trance grooves, funky psychedelia. What is there not to love about Tago Mago?

I remember one lunch-time I was trying to kill some minutes, so I just randomly started flicking through their shelves...I was a right prog-snob back then, so cue me scoffing and grunting in mocking disgust at most of what I flicked past, and then all of a sudden - Arena's `The Visitor' was there!! TO this day, I have no idea how it ended up there...I mean, it wasn't like those sort of albums were given a local Aussie release, so it means it would have been imported, but I remember snapping it up in an instant. I didn't know anything about the band but completely recognised the album cover from seeing it in a music magazine (this was also pretty early into internet days, so I certainly hadn't seen it online anywhere), all I knew is that it was `proggy'. Over my remaining years there I occasionally went through the entire store again, but I never came close to finding anything like it.

I don't mind the album, but it's got my least favourite Arena vocalist on it (mental blank on his name), and I seem to lose interest by about the half-way mark. I can't even think off the top of my head anything in the second half of the disc. It still seems to be considered their `classic' by many of the fans.
I know the kind of store, and feeling. I'm sure someone forgot it there LOL

I guess you skip the acapella track (Crying for help something) on Pride, then Tongue He's good but I also prefer Sowden and Manzi too.

The first side is probably some of his strongest work (although I remember the debut album was kind of nice, just haven't listened to it in a while), there's even an 11 minute piece that, whilst not particularly original or challenging, is full of variety, dramatic moments and plentiful solos. The second side sadly adds really bland female vocals on most of the pieces. The music underneath her is OK but also totally forgettable and never really develops anywhere.

I have a soft spot for Garrison. He didn't seem to lead a very happy life, had a sad end too. He's also constantly often instantly dismissed, or worse, kind of become a `poster child' for everything that went wrong in prog-electronic music in the 80's when it started adopting more New Age elements. The amount of hate and nasty `name-dropping'of him I've noticed around the net is disappointing. I think he deserves a bit more than that, even if you'd never consider him to be one of the ground-breaking artists of the genre.

"Totally forgettable and never really develops anywhere", it's exacly that about most of Prisms as well. It's probably one of those artists with an handful of great songs but no really good albums. It's sad he got so much hatred though Ermm

Good band, Gary! I have that little EP of theirs, although I haven't spun it in a while. I noticed they put up a free live concert on their Bandcamp a little while ago but I havent streamed it yet, have you listened to that, and if so, your thoughts?

Hope you have a good New Year as well, mate. No doubt it will bring us no shortage of great albums!

^  I just picked up on the band today on the Random Bands (2) poll. The guitars and keyboards got my attention right away. They have a self released CD according to Discogs but there aren't any for sale right now.
I'll do a more thorough search tomorrow.

We'll have to see what next year brings musically. 2016 will be hard to beat in that regard. Smile

Cherry Five - Cherry Five - All killer, no filler! I just posted my review of this and have been totally obsessed with it lately. Just a super well-done symphonic album with infectious energy and a real propensity to rock out! Love it! Heart

Urban Nomad - Urban Nomad - Semi-recent Canadian release from some guys out of Manitoba. Really fantastic stuff; a very bluesy concept work with a strong fusion base. I hear a lot of the jazzier side of Camel in this. Fantastic arrangements, superb soloing. Loved it so much that I downloaded it!

Teleharmonium - The Mother Generator - This is more or less the same band as Urban Nomad, just re-branded and with a slight lineup change. And it's just as great, if not more so! This one takes on more of a crossover approach, with some Pink Floyd-like sections, more soloing goodness, and even some good ol' rock n' roll tracks (albeit with nice prog keyboard touches). I really hope they come out with more, because ya gotta support the local economy somehow. Wink Also downloaded this one. Very highly recommended.

Tacita Intesa - Tacita Intesa - Jumping on the Tacita Intesa bandwagon. Gotta agree; great keyboard playing on this album. It's pretty hard to go wrong with modern Italian releases in general, though. Does the Italian government have some kind of bureau of prog quality control or something? Because if they do, it's working. Really well!

Modern-Rock Ensemble - Touch The Mystery - Yeah, I'm really not sure why this is getting so much positive attention. It's well-produced and well-performed music, but ultimately pretty forgettable. And the vocals are so tired-sounding, too, which takes a lot of energy away, even during the more spirited sections. That isn't to totally write it off, of course, because the 20 minute title track really does have a certain power to it while it's still playing.
