I've come to the conclusion that Anoraknophobia is my favorite H-era album, and I don't care if that's an unpopular opinion.

Still pumped for the DC show. Wondering what the setlist is going to be like.

It's not unpopular, just out of keeping with most other fan's opinions, but it would be a dull world indeed if we all felt the sameBig smile

I don't know all the H-era albums as yet, far from it, but of those I've heard (6 in all) Anoraknophobia is my second favourite.  Only the almighty Marbles beats it (and by some distance I'd add, as Marbles really is a 5-star classic).

Quartz is a superb track but the one that has seeped into my system and just totally transfixes me is This Is The 21st Century.  I just can't get this wonderful song out of my head these days.  Fantastic vocals and also some lovely tasteful guitar from Rothery.

I've not really been able to get into Marillion. Perhaps someone can enlighten me or give me some titles to help them click.

Listen to Marbles and any of the Fish-era albums.

If you don't like those, they won't click.

I've tried.

Anorak, Radiation and .Com are really overlooked albums. I think all 3 can easily hold up to Marbles and the other more popular albums.

I'd say Brave and Afraid of Sunlight are also decent samplers of the best of the h-era but otherwise yeah, there's two basic flavours of Marillion, some like one, some like both, and some are going to like neither.

I have "Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws". I was not impressed by "Childhood" at all, but I like the first half of "Straws".

With the fish era, Fugazi or Misplaced Childhood. As for H era, if you don't appreciate and love either Brave or Marbles, then you will never get into them.

In fact, listen to Invisible Man or Ocean Cloud. There are a few things like Genie and other more commercial songs which may not "convince" you. Invisible Man and Ocean Cloud equal nearly a 1/2 hour in just those two songs alone... and they are perhaps the highest point that they have ever reached

Argh.  I was just at a CD store and though they had the new Madfish reissues of Somewhere Else and marillion.com they did not have Marbles.

Perhaps for the best, though, as they were like $19 and I see I can get those two from Burning Shed for $13.50, and Marbles for $16.25.  (Well, plus shipping, of course.)

I find them both excellent albums, yeah it's all a matter of tastes!

As for the H-era I lost track after Brave, for some reason I can't really pinpoint really. I should give them a try.

On the basis of the Marillion albums I have heard (10 in all) I fully agree.

I'll add "Brave" to my Amazon shopping cart. I really like the darker edge of "Clutching at Straws" and Fish's lyrics are always fantastic. The one thing that I can't get passed on Marillion records is the 80s production!!

That issue got in the way somewhat for me on Fish era Marillion as well, but thankfully it's minimal on Season's End, and pretty much gone altogether by Brave.  Sonically though, Marbles is perhaps their greatest achievement ( so far ).

While I do agree that Marbles may be Marillion's greatest achievement because of the big 3 that appear on there...

Invisible Man
Ocean Cloud
and
Neverland...

these two songs back to back...

State of Mind
Happiness is the Road

are pretty damn impressive as well!

I discovered Marillion with Brave. I bought the CD after having heard much good about the band in the pages of the november 2009(10?) issue of Rock Hard (french version), which was a special issue for prog (double interview portnoy/akerfeldt, etc ...).

Brave really is a great CD. I haven't browsed all their discography yet, but Radiation is also a very worthy effort - much more than Holidays in Eden for me, considering both of theses CDs were going the mainstream route. Season's End is great also, but I am not the biggest Marbles fan ... Probably should lock myself in a room with only this album playing for a few days. As for the Fish era, I love his voice, though I don't prefer it to Hogarth's. The SFAJT song is a favorite of mine but most of this 80's period sounds to ... 80's for me. I can less and less bear this outdated production which plagued such great albums as Brothers in Arms ...

A classic band that everybody should listen to nevertheless.

Hey both - welcome along to the Marillion ride, and it's nice to see some love for Hogarth.

Chozal - definitely lock yourself in the room with Marbles - when it hits you, you will have a great deal of difficulty choosing between it  Brave. You might also want to consider getting the Marbles on The Road DVD, which has the (one) CD in full live in London. it is phenomenal.

I guess I will in some time ^^

As for Hogarth, his voice may not be as powerful or personal as Fish, but I think he can get better nuances out of it, which is alway a good point in a prog act.
