Right on! I can't think of the last time that I only listened to part of Tales! I go in telling myself that I'll only listen to a side or two, and then 80 minutes later I'm inevitably rocking out to that killer Howe solo that closes off Ritual. The whole album just flows, builds, and develops so wonderfully. Oh man, The Ladder. I'll have to listen to that one more often. No doubt from the hippier "kumbaya-save-the-whales" side of Yes, which is right up my alley. There aren't really any majestic symphonic moments like you're used to from Yes, but it's a wonderful, creative collection of songs. And the cover is one of my favourite Roger Dean pieces! I agree with Griot. I was blown away by how good they were when they first got brought to eclectic. Gerald is one of my favourites of 2016; such a concise, emotive, and memorable record. I'm just debating whether or not it deserves the top spot on my list over Promenade's masterpiece.

Totally agree about that `Ladder' cover, Kevin! That's probably why I mourn that t-shirt!! I think I was using it as a scrappy t-shirt to wear while I was painting part of the house a few months back! Yes, it's not my favourite Yes album (and definitely some of it could probably have fit on a Jon Anderson solo album, but it's still a colurful collection.
Heh, and I was listening to `Topo' at work, much to the absolute confusion of the office! Samuel tipped me off about that Griot album (cheers buddy!), and then I saw on Facebook the band make a post about a discount sale on their CD over Christmas, so I figured it was best to take the plunge there and then. It's been superb, short but sweet too. I've got a very positive review for it that I'll post any day now, they should be very proud of their efforts. If they're already so good, imagine what they might go on to deliver in a couple of years?! And that's great to read that you're going to place that Promenade album high in your top 20 list, I will be too! |

Hey Sam, seing a (great) review of this recently pop up on the front page, in addition to listening to that Jorge Palma album reminded me that you might find this rarer light but highly rehgarded RPI album interesting:
Sorry, couldn't find a clip of the entire album. I picked up an LP reissue of this many years ago, it's a beautiful album. Not a prog-rock blowout by any means, but pretty much more-or-less as `proggy' as something like, say, Le Orme's `Storia O Leggenda'? https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=15452 |

Skaldowie - Krywan, Krywan - Some nice and creative eclectic prog out of early 70's Poland. Great violin soloing and lots of Hammond organ to appreciate. I can't say I'm totally sold on this one, but the performances are fantastic. Definitely one to revisit.
Arco Iris - Agitor Lucens V - What a journey! A trippy, exotic, otherworldly voyage through the mythological tales of Pre-Columbian extraterrestrial contact. And the music is fantastic. Psychedelic jams, jazz excursions, Andean folk, some avant-garde twists, symphonic passages, bluesy melodies, you've got it all! One of the most incredible South American albums of the 70's, hands down. |

Totally! Sudamerica is my favourite, and possibly the most impressive. The fact that they were pulling something off stuff that ambitious, and doing it so well, in 1972 is astonishing! But you really can't go wrong with their stuff. They nail folk, they nail jazz, they nail psychedelia, it's win-win-win!

What's that one like, Sagi? I really enjoyed their previous album, and I think I'd planned to grab this newer one at some point throughout the year but just never quite got around to it. |

Today's choices:
Good God s/t Abraxis s/t Zzebra Panic Patrick Vian Bruits et Temps Analogues Gianni DErrico Antico Teatro da Camera Mirror Daybreak Return to Forever Where Have I Known You Before? Perigeo - Genealogia Arti e Mestieri Tilt Arti e Mestieri Giro di Valzer per Domani Santana Borboletta Peter Bardens Seen One Earth - Saw the review on the front page, dug out my LP. I forgot how much this sounds like 80s/`Underwater Sunlight-era Tangerine Dream) Sintesis s/t - Anybody else heard this instrumental ripper from 1976? A litte bit fusion, a little bit Dzyan...It was a recent blind-buy, and I'm so happy with it. Unusually short and sweet at barely 27 minutes too, but every secondof it is cool and fiery! (heh, there's a bonus track that pads the album out to 32 minutes! |

Never heard this band before so I really didn't know what to expect, it was really a blind buy, I honestly don't know why I bought it I think I was looking for something more in the lines of the Ozrics. Anyway yesterday was my first listening to it, I played it twice and I can say I really enjoyed it the whole way through. I think there are a lot of bands playing this kind of psych prog, but this has a very retro sounding which I really dig! Sounds to me more like the stuff Gary listens to But I don't think the album is very original or especially strong so I'm not blown away by it, there are a few truly great moments, overall it's definitely a good album but hardly an essential for my taste. I'm looking forward to listening to it again today...

^ Yeah, it's one of the bands I listen to. I seem to remember Sam posting about them (I'm not real sure about that) and I gave them a listen. I have the self titled release from 2014 on clear vinyl and I somehow ended up with two copies of The Occultation Of Light, one red vinyl and one powder blue vinyl. I don't know how that happened.

You bought Sintesis as a blind buy?!? The cheapest I've ever found it online was for over $300! Definitely a cool album, though, even if it is ridiculously short. Features some Bubu members if I'm not mistaken.

Faust - So Far Take back what I said about the first two Faust albums yesterday. They are by no means "dry." This album is phenomenal. The music is creative beyond words, the instrumental work is phenomenal. Sometimes charming, sometimes "on the edge" - this is the definition of good experimental music of the 70's.
Egg - The Polite Force In case you haven't heard me shouting about how this is my #1 album of all time, I will repeat: this music is me, gods created The Polite Force for me. I know every second of this album and, though it doesn't surprise me, it feels like a good old friend that will never let you down. Black Moth Super Rainbow - Start a People This is, in my opinion, the progressive music of today. It's not sophisticated, but, at least in my mind, this musical potion is something that the world has not heard a lot of. There are influences of early electronic music, rhythmically it's post-hip-hop esque, while melodically it's very self-aware in its comedic space-age-esque kitsch. Albert Ayler - The Last Album I was surprised to see Henry Vestine, the guitarist of Canned Heat, a band I used to be a big fan of, as a musician on this album. I am positively surprised to hear that he is able to work well with improvising jazz musicians. This is a pretty good album overall, the noisy free-form mayhem is controlled, calculated, and varied, which I really appreciate and enjoy. Can - Ege Bamyasi Can is one-of-a-kind phenomenon in the history of the universe. Their style is so distinctive, pronounced, and characteristic and one Can song sounds like no other one. The opener, "Pinch", based on a 70's Miles-like groove is my favorite, but every track has its own charm. Excellent! |

Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden - step out of the space provided.
