That cheesy lyric still makes me laugh, but it would've been better-placed on the Love Beach album. Tongue

No BSS , presumably as the live triple pretty much includes the whole thing and is better performed live?

I rarely paid attention to ELP lyrics (and when it was pointed out to me how bad the lyrics of Love Beach are, ruined the album even more for me LOL), but here i agree, "ladder" just rhymes with the other two words, "sadder" and "madder". LOL It's a head-scratcher definitely (to put it kindly).

I think the idea comes across just fine with the lyrics as written.

No it's not. Why don't people get this? It's a metaphor, albeit clumsy, about lowering a ladder into his well of despair in order to climb to the light once again. As I said...clumsy. But it is NOT just a rhyming word with madder and sadder.

^ I never realised the lyric "Every day a little sadder, a little madder, someone get me a ladder" was such a deep and meaningful metaphor either. I just assumed it was because "ladder" is the only word that rhymes with "sadder" and "madder". Tongue
