Subject: Top 7 ELP Albums

Welcome Back My Friends to the polls that never end. Come inside. Come inside. If you believe in The Power of Three, then you'll believe in the awesome Trilogy of Emerson, Lake & Palmer. If you include ELP's full Works, there were two short-lived offshoots of the dynamic Tarkus trio too: Emerson, Lake & Powell and Emerson, Berry & Palmer, otherwise known as "3". I've been In the Hot Seat recently for showing some love towards the much-maligned Love Beach album - an album which was about as welcome amongst ELP fans as an ominous Black Moon on the horizon. The cheesy Beach Gees album cover and album title admittedly looks and sounds like a third-rate reality TV show, and it probably is. I'm thinking "Love Island", which is close enough. Anyway, here's an opportunity to list your Top 7 ELP albums. Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy, you may say. After all, it's not Brain Salad Surgery. It's just a bit of fun. You can also include the live album Pictures at an Exhibition in your Top 7 listings too if you so wish.
Simply list your Top 7 ELP albums in order of preference and then I'll assign the usual system of points to your listings:-
1st album - 12 points
2nd album - 8 points
3rd album - 6 points
4th album - 4 points
5th album - 3 points
6th album - 2 points
7th album - 1 point
Here's my ELP Top 7 to kick off with:-
1. Works Volume 1 (12 points)
2. Black Moon (8 points)
3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer (6 points)
4. Emerson, Lake & Powell (4 points)
5. Tarkus (3 points)
6. Pictures at an Exhibition (2 points)
7. Love Beach (1 point)

^ Yes, Love Beach is far more listenable and easy on my ears than Brain Salad Surgery and Trilogy, although I know many here will disagree with me, but that's okay. I'm accustomed to being ridiculed for my bizarre album rankings by now.

Love Beach is ELP's answer to Yes' Heaven & Earth.

it's awesome ELP answered in 1978 to Yes's album from 2014. They time travelled and thought to themselves - let's make a better album then H&E.

Love Beach is ELP's answer to Yes' Heaven & Earth.
That's a good analogy, because Heaven & Earth happens to be one of my favourite Yes albums.

1. Brain Salad Surgery
2. Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3. Tarkus
4. Pictures At An Exhibition
5. Trilogy
6. Works, Volume 1 (very flawed but I have a soft spot for it nonetheless)
7. Works, Volume 2 (not a big fan of this one actually, but it's still miles better than anything they made afterwards)
I can see why people would genuinely enjoy Love Beach and I think that's totally fine, but it doesn't have anything I like about the band and I personally don't see anything in it that hasn't been done much better by other artists.

I know, that's why I said it. If anything, Love Beach is probably more derided than H&E, but that's as much for the cover as the content. At least Yes had a Roger Dean cover.

Come on, did you think that giant machine Keith used to play was just a keyboard? It was actually a cleverly concealed time machine.

The top 4 are as I would have predicted although not necessarily in that order - I would have put a small amount of cash on BSS being top.
For what it's worth my 7 would be
1. Trilogy
2. BSS
3. WBMFTTSTNE
4. Tarkus
5. s/t
6. Pictures
7. Works 1

I actually just played it again - Canario is an acceptable number but as for the rest of it, suffice to say I won't lose any sleep if I never hear it again.

That's something we both agree on then, because I think In the Hot Seat is ELP's worst album too.
I've included the "3" (Emerson, Berry & Palmer) album in ELP's discography for the same reason I included Emerson, Lake & Powell, as they're both closely-related to ELP.

they have a separate page, the band has a different name after all.
When they picked Cozy Powell as their drummer, it also mattered I guess it started with P, they still were ELP.

The Emerson, Lake & Powell album is listed amongst ELP's albums on ProgArchives, so on that basis, I think Emerson, Berry & Palmer's album should be listed there too, regardless of having different band initials. After all, if the "3" album hadn't been listed amongst ELP's albums on Wikipedia, then I would've missed the album entirely - although maybe that's not such a bad thing, bearing in mind it's not a great album.

Just a suggestion but when you rank bands it would be wise to qualify your opinions with the words, "At this point of time", because your views and tastes generally change over time according to the number of times you play a piece of music, what other music you play over time and personal taste in particular music. Nothing at all wrong with preferring Love Beach to Trilogy except to set in stone a preference for Love Beach over Trilogy.

None of my rankings and ratings are set in stone, but I'll stick with them for the time being. I remember being disappointed with the technically demanding Brain Salad Surgery album when I first heard it back in the 1970's and I'm still not a big fan of the album over 40 years later.
Regarding Love Beach, I only heard the album for the first time last week, and I may grow to love the album even more over time. Then again, maybe I won't.

After all the bad things I'd heard about ELP's much-derided Love Beach album, I was surprised to find myself actually liking the album, but I'm in general agreement with you: the Officer and a Gentleman suite on Side Two is much better than the Pop songs on Side One.

I never would've guessed that abysmal lyric is from ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. It sounds "badder" than a Barry Manilow lyric.

"Quick, I need something that rhymes with sadder and madder"
"How about ladder?"

So many what ifs about that lyric. They could have gone with "Could it get any badder" or "I need to evacuate my bladder".
As another thought is War Pigs by Black Sabbath the only song that manages to rhyme the same word, albeit with different meanings? Generals gathered in their masses, Just like witches at black masses

I'm shocked and disappointed that there's not much love here for Love Beach, when it's more commercially-appealing and more listenable (to my ears) than either Brain Salad Surgery or Trilogy, which aren't even in my Top 10 ELP albums.

I don't know why you're shocked, Love Beach is generally regarded as one of the low points of prog, let alone ELP's output. I'm more shocked that their two best albums aren't in your top 10. Trilogy is one of the great wonders of prog and not particularly hard to get into.

disappointed?!
The lyrics alone make some cringe as does the album cover. Even the band was not fond of it, they had contracts to honor so they made this.
I am surprised you defend it so much when there's not much to defend.

1. Emerson, Lake & Palmer;
2. Brain Salad Surgery;
3. Tarkus;
4. Trilogy;
5. Welcome Back My Friends;
6. Emerson, Lake & Powell;
7. Works, Volume 1.
Really hard to decide which one for the fourth position, Tarkus or Trilogy.
And I'm surprised on how well BSS is doing over the debut.

their debut?
No?
The debut has some great tracks (Barbarian, Knife Edge & some of Tank) but much of the material betrays the same flaws that revealed themselves 7 years later during the band's death throes i.e. the problems of satisfying such a disparate trio of personalities as ELP
were manifest as early as this 1970 album.
The inclusion of 'solo' tracks can be interpreted two ways: as an
expediency to placate a record label anxious to meet the voracious
demand for product before sufficient group material had been worked up
or, ELPas an ego massage parlor. Coming full circle at the demise of their career on the 1977 Works album, the symmetry is complete, with each member getting a side
each of a double album.

your shock makes no sense to me.
I'm shocked and disappointed that there's not much love here for Love Beach, when it's more commercially-appealing and more listenable (to my ears) than either Brain Salad Surgery or Trilogy, which aren't even in my Top 10 ELP albums.
I don't think most people come to a prog website when they're looking for something with commercial appeal
