Richard Pilon set up the Sugar Shack expedition last time. Even though it was up for consideration, I don't think he's going to do it this time, which really bums me out. His reasoning is with all of the stuff going on this time with Brutopia and the Sunday afternoon event, would interest even be a consideration? Personally, I'd loved to go back to the Sugar Shack. Got to see the lovely Canadian countryside and have a wonderful brunch.

He's thinking about doing the tour of Montreal, which really doesn't interest me at all. Personally, I'd prefer the Sugar Shack, but I understand his reasoning.

Thanks for offering, Steve. Mighty kind of you. May have to take you up on that one.

Well, I know few places that serve a mean Sunday brunch, and if you and Kenmar are willing , together with Denise and myself we could go to one and stuff ourselves. On the way back into town I could give you the 50 cent tour ( Just like Chevy Chase and his family at the Grand Canyon in Nat'l Lampoon's American Vacation ) before we get to the final evening at L'Olympia. All I would ask of you is that if we ever get to KC ( or Portland in Kenmar's case ) you do the same for us.  Sound like a tentative plan ?

Sounds like a fair deal to me. You and Denise make it to KC and I'll introduce you to authentic barbeque that will make you weep.

I have the first three Fish-era discs.  The first one I acquired was Misplaced Childhood, and it blew me away on the first listen (rare for a prog album).  To this day, it remains one of my favorite concept albums, and I never get tired of listening to it.  I also like Script for a Jester's Tear, mainly for the title track and Garden Party, but I haven't listened to the other stuff enough, even though I've enjoyed it.  Fugazi is also good, though again, my experience with it is limited.

I wanted to explore the Hogarth era, so I acquired what I'd read was their best disc--Anoraknophobia. Unfortunately, I was bored out of my mind, and every time I try to revisit it, I have exactly the same reaction to it.  I didn't just mind it because it was different from Fish, but because the music seemed to have no texture of any kind--it sounded consistently droning, resigned, and synthetic to me.  I paid special attention to This is the Twenty-First Century, which I'd read was the best track.  No matter how much I tried to like it, it did nothing for me.  I found myself disappointed that the same band which had put out the emotional tour de force that was Misplaced Childhood (specifically Blind Curve!) could write what sounded to me like emotionless music.

I have shelved it for now and will give it another shot when I am open-minded enough to try it again.  But I would like to explore the Hogarth era, and the other one I've heard is good is Brave.  It's a concept album, so that's automatic points from me, because I tend to really like those types of albums.  Again, I'm not expecting Fish, but I am hoping for something that sounds more interesting than Anoraknophobia.  Maybe Hogarth is just an acquired taste.

Either way, I don't like it when people call Fish-era Marillion a Genesis ripoff.  There's an influence, sure, but they even have a unique sound by the first track on their first album.  Either way, I'll always think of Marillion as the band that gave us Misplaced Childhood first, perhaps because that's where I started but also because I've never heard music quite like it.

^ Hi Hanyou, welcome.

Anoraknophobia is nowhere near the best album to start off your exploration of H era Marillion. It is very much an acquired taste.

Definitely go for Brave, which is a work of genius, one of the finest concept albums ever made. Also, Marbles, whilst not a concept album but one linked by themes, is such an incredibly good album, you'll kick yourself for not having it before.

As for the rest, I like them all. Radiation and This Strange Engine both contain Marillion classics, and I also highly rate Seasons End, his first with the band. There are also some magical moments on Happiness Is The Road.

Enjoy, and let us all know what you think.

Marillion was one of the first bands I heard starting beginning of the 80ties and at that time they were one of my favourite bands. I was crazy enough to translate their lyrics into German!
I saw them Live 1987 - my first live concert in my life!
I bought a ticket for a concert in 1988 and got a letter back, that Marillion split (no internet that time!!!).
So after that I was kind of lucky, because there were two good bands, Fish and Marillion with Hogarth. But Marillion left the path of making music I like after 'Holidays in Eden'. I followed Fish for a longer time, but this also stopped after 'Raingods with Zippos' (very bad Keyboarder imho).
Still my favorites:
- Script for a jester's tear
- Fugazi
- Season's end (with Hogarth)
- Vigil in a wilderness of mirrors (Fish)
- Internal exile (Fish)

By the way - with Misplaced Childhood the was a slight change of their music style - which was powered by the 1984 Marquee concerts of ELOY. Did you know that Fish wanted to do a double headliner tour with Eloy that time?
Big smile

Yeah, wondering who told you that Anoraknophobia was their best disc. I personally love it, but I would never tell somebody to begin their journey with that one. Brave is the best disc I own, but don't expect a concept like Misplaced Childhood. Very dark in spots, but it's such an amazing piece and blows MC out of the water. Just find it a bit more emotional than anything they had done before or since. Such an anger and bitterness to it. Amazing.

Marbles is another one, but only if you get the 2 disc version. "Ocean Cloud" is a must.

Thanks, lazland and E-Dub!  At the time I wasn't a member of progarchives and I didn't even visit the main page regularly, so I didn't really have proper context.  I was kind of blindly looking things up.  There were a lot of "best" discs for H-era Marillion, but I settled on Anoraknophobia because the good reviews I read of it were extremely enthusiastic.  Probably not a good idea, but again, I didn't really know where to go at the time.

I'll definitely check out Brave.  I've read about the concept and I also know the music doesn't have hooks--you have to work to understand it.  I don't mind that. Even though I like the Fish era for its accessibility (I mean, it was passable as pop), I've listened to more sophisticated prog and I look forward to whatever Brave and the other H-era albums have to offer.  I certainly don't intend to give up because I don't understand the music yet!

Again, thanks. Smile

Brave didn't really catch on with me upon first listen. I think it took numerous spins; however, once it did and fully grasped the album, I was convinced that this was one of those special albums.

In the liner notes it suggests to listen to it loud with the lights off. I would second that.

Let us know what you think.

BTW, as you spend more time on the site, you will find that there are reviewers who you can "trust" to give you a decent chance of enjoying (or not) an album, and those you can't. The latter, by the way, does not mean they are bad reviewers, just that their tastes will not accord with yours.

I was there about a year ago looking for a Frost* disk and more Big Big Train, and even though they showed on their website they did not have anything in the store. It seemed that their prog selection was really reduced and that metal was taking over. I passed by again in the summer, and it seemed to be about the same. But I know they have since merged with another store, so perhaps things have improved somewhat. It will be worth going back to see what they are like now.
It's too bad the record store haydays of years gone by have faded so much. I remember when walking downtown you could find one every few blocks, and I used to map out my searches and come up with all kinds of interesting stuff . Now, in the entire city there are really only two major stores, ( HMV and Archambault ) and barely a handfull of specialists.
