Satch,  super collosal is incredible.

Super Colossal was a very, very disappointing album for me ... one word: "boring" !

As far as Vai is concerned ... do you even know Vai songs other than For the Love of God? Consider other well known songs such as Bad Horsie, Answers, Sisters, Call it Sleep?, The Attitude Song, ... are you really saying that they all sound alike?

I love guitars, and I love metal, but I am one of those losers who say almost all shred sounds alike. Super collosal is very divers and not as pretensious (depending on who you ask that could be a good or bad thing), and well rounded.

Vai's albums on the other hand, tend to flip flop from fast, to slow, to acoustic, to fast. Thats just me though.

You just named a few songs which don't sound alike to Joe because obviously the guy isn't an identical clone;

I wasn't comparing Vai's songs to Satriani's songs, I was comparing Vai songs to each other.

but most of the important stuff composed by Vai sound clearly influenced by Joe and Zappa; at least for me, a blend not suitable at all Dead

IMO it's ridiculous to say that Vai sounds like Satriani just because at one time Satch gave lessons to Vai. The trademark songs of each of them were written in the 80s and afterwards, a decade after those lessons had taken place and both artists had developed significantly since then.

Did I mention the fact that Satch tought Vai? Hell, everytime I have a discussion with you I have the impression you read the last two words of my replies, unless you referred indirectly, I mean to the general thoughs about and not to me, according to your second answer. Wink

Anyway, since you mentioned that (as most of the people who's posted here), no matter how ridiculous it sounds, it's a 80% of possibilities that Vai were influenced by Joe for the simple fact that he gave him lessons. I just say Vai sounds alike to Joe, but not because Steve took lessons; IMO he simply tries to sound as his master who is way a better composer; maybe not that fast playing the guitar, but clearly better musician.

These things and many others are better explained in my review of  "Passion & Warfare" Wink
The best you can is good enough...

^ I don't think that Vai sounds like Satriani *at all* ... of course one tapping solo will always sound somewhat similar to another tapping solo which uses similar patterns/technique (same applies to sweep picking etc). But the tonal material of Vai is fundamentaly different from Satch. The closest Vai comes to Satriani is on Fire Garden (first half) ... but even there Vai's music is inherently (and in this case subconsciously) quirky and experimental, whereas Satch is always more melodic and conventional - even with all the unusual scales and tunings he uses.

I like both very much btw ... I'm not trying to "diss" Satch - I'm just saying that he's typical Guitar Shred (he defined the genre) while Vai is shredding too (obviously), but at the same time much more inventive in terms of songwriting and "unusuality".
