Would Anoraknophobia or Marillion.Com be good bets for this?

If you're looking for something alike Marbles, then I'd indeed recommend Anoraknophobia - it's nice to see where the Marillion sound came from and how certain things in the Anorak-music have been used more exstensively on Marbles, whilst other elements have been fased out. I wouldn't recommend listening to .com, though. As opposed to Anoraknophobia, Happiness is the Road is a very nice project of where the music from Marbles has evolved to, both musically and lyrically. It also is a lot more alike with Marbles, where Anoraknophobia was still a bit of a try-out of different styles of music, I think.
I would also recommend Somewhere Else, which, I think, is a very good and solid 4 star album - though not everyone here at the Round Table likes the album, I guess. It's really funny, but when I listen to SE, I always have the feeling the band produced this album before the came up with Marbles: the sounds are sometimes more remeniscent of Anoraknophobia than the music on Marbles. So a bit of a regression in a non-negative way - it's like the missing-link between Anoraknophobia and Marbles, only published at a latter stage
Let me know, what you're planning on listening to and how you liked it!

To be frank, they are all great. Somewhere Else suffers a little bit from not being Marbles, but does contain some exceptional moments. The last "proper" studio album, HITR, is a wonderful album and utterly essential in any Marillion collection. Top of the list to get? Brave, without question. But, if you want my real advice, get them all

Happiness or Anoraknophobia. Dotcom is my second to last disc, so I can't recommend it. WebUK'ers, they're giving everybody the Loreley gig for a Christmas present. Love it that they're doing the DVD's now. E

Love your choice of Cinderella Search as a favourite song - one of the better Fish-era songs, IMO. Interesting, though, that your favourite h-album is SE - a good album, IMO, but defenitely not better than the cliché´s Brave or Marbles, that´s what I think at least. Can you explain a bit more detailed why Season´s End is your favourite?
Hope to see you around more.

Thanks for the welcome.
I suppose really the main reason is the ammount of listening time I gave Seasons End over the other newer albums. Bit of a naff reason I guess lol. I enjoyed Brave live but never got into the album like others have.

Rick. Go to the supermarket. Buy eight bottles of very strong real ale. Go home. Drink five of them. Wait until it's dark outside. Put on your CD player, preferably in surround sound. Place Brave in player and listen in complete and utter darkness at a very loud volume whilst drinking the rest of your ale. Lastly, wonder at the sheer majesty and emotional brilliance of it all when you've finished.

Haha, well, I wouldn´t know about the ale, but can assure you that it is quite essential for being able to really appreciate Brave in all its emotion is to listen to it in the dark! Closing your eyes, however, won't do - you have to "see" the darkness! Really, have a try on it and just let your feelings run through your vains.

Good day to you all ladies and gents. Just got the new DVD, "Live From Cadogan Hall" and I must say that after watching the first 7 tracks that it is a really fine performance. The band are very relaxed, and perhaps the songs breathe a little more than they did on the L=M CD. h gets to talk a bit, and he is his usual charming self, and this lends a rather sincere and disarming quality to the performance. The venue is quite nice, and the lighting the band use really enhances the music. A humourous note - Pete is given charge over the xylophone, and it's quite funny to watch him really concentrate as he plays it, and tries to get all his bits right !! He's much more at ease on bass and guitar, but get's full points for the job done with the mallets ! Off to watch the rest over the week-end.
Cheers

Latest e-bulletin from the band pasted below: Greetings from Southern Germany! Deep Purple tour going very well
Feel like a rock 'n' roll star up on these big stages. Good to have a
bit of room to move again. Large arenas full and the audience response
has been even better than we hoped for. Deep Purple are very pleasant
chaps. Day off the other day in Memmingen - a well-kept secret of a
place. Perfect for Christmas. The fire brigade were trimming the big
tree in the square.
Let's hope there are no fires then!
Love to all

Latest e-bulletin from the band below. Looks like the tour is doing very well: Photos:Steve Rothery
|
Sitting in the dressing room which had the distinct atmosphere
of a call centre (everyone tapping into laptops) until Deep Purple's Don
Airey poked his head through the door to say hello. Thoroughly nice
chap. Oldenburg tonight. They auction cattle in this hall.. Voice
holding up well.
4 shows to go. Time flies when you're having fun. DP tour going really well and Marillos all in good spirits.
Soon I'll be back home for frantic solo rehearsals for Christmas gigs solo.
No rest for the wicked..
See you soon somewhere hopefully.. Check out my dates if you
couldn't get to Germany. I might even sing you "Smoke On The Water"..

NEWSFLASH:25.11.10 Band and crew Went to an Irish pub in Oldenburg

time had by all. Nurofen at dawn but no casualty's....Great gig
tonight.26.11.10.Band played very well and the audience were fab..Stayed
and watched Deep Purple set..They were really good...2.30 now .Off to
bed. Going to have an early night..Thank you and good night..
Just arrived in Stuttgart..Snow on the ground.Nice hotel that is
next door to the Mercedes museum..Think I will check that out later.
Today is our last gig with Deep Purple. Wish we were off to France with
them for the last leg of their tour....Best wishes and a Merry Christmas
to everyone ..cheers.Ian

Arrived in snowy Stuttgart for a day off before our last show
supporting Deep Purple. I think we might have picked up a few new fans
on this tour. On the whole the audiences have been very enthusiastic and
the Deep Purple band and crew have been a pleasure to work with.
Strange only playing for an hour and Sunday night we were on stage at
7pm which always feels weird. Off to the Christmas market later for a
bit of shopping. Looking forward to sleeping in a bed tonight. Anyone
who thinks sleeping on a tour bus sounds like fun should try it for
three weeks! The ventilation fans above my bunk sound like a 747 taking
off!
Looking forward to getting home on Wednesday.
Steve
The tour has gone really well and we have gone down much better
than I think we anticipated so Thank you if you were one of the people
who saw us and enjoyed the show. I know it was short and sweet for
Marillion. We tried to fit in as many aspects of our music as we could
and I think we got it right on that score. Deep Purple and their crew
have been fantastic and really nice people to be on tour with, which
makes the the whole thing go well.
Anyway enough of that, I've just been to the Gym and ran for 10k.
Not bad I thought. It is snowing and I am off to the Christmas market in
a bit. Looking out my bedroom window I feel like I could be in Narnia. I
hope it's safe out there !

Latest from the band below: Had a great time at the FAC Christmas party. Played a couple of songs with
Mr H and Sandie Shaw, together with my good friend Robin - always good fun.
On the way back to the tube I ended up playing Black Bird in a Kebab shop
for a rather spaced out Aussie chap - very surreal indeed!
A second Defence Of The Realm Gig is being held on Friday 10th Dec, yes this
Friday, at The Peel in Kingston. Sorry it is such short notice, I just didn't get it
together to let anyone know while I was on tour. It is sold out but don't
worry, I'm sure we'll do another one at some time.
Have a good weekend.
Pete.

If you didn't catch this album the first time around 'Happiness Is The Road' is our current featured Album on marillion.com. Released in 2008, this album is available in Deluxe, CD, Download & Vinyl versions.
For a limited time over Christmas the CD is available for the special promotional price of £5.99 or £4.99 for the download.
Go to www.marillion.com/music/albums/hitr for sound clips and other related info from the 'Happiness' project.
" For me HITR is not so much an album but more like 3 years
in the life of Marillion. We started the first tentative steps with
songs like Real Tears, A State Of Mind, Threw Me Out back in 2005. I say
tentative because it was our first time working with Mike Hunter in the
producer's chair. You can almost see the confidence of our relationship
grow over time so that the last few songs to be written and recorded
were much more adventurous; songs like Essence, HITR, Asylum Satellite
and The Man From The Planet Marzipan.
It's such a varied album in its range of styles and approaches that
it can be difficult to listen to all at once. We divided the songs into
two groups that work together lyrically as well as musically and these
make up the two discs. Personally, which disc I prefer depends on my
mood.
If you are like most people these days and listen to your music from
iTunes/iPod then this is the perfect album to grab 5 or 6 songs and
string them together in an playlist of your choice. If I had to choose a
favourite song from HITR it would have to be Asylum Satellite, although
Essence would come in at a close second."

Thanks for the update, Lazzy. I'm (personally) getting excited for the next WebUK magazine and the Loreley DVD.
The new Cadogan DVD is pretty low on my priority list. I normally pre-order all of their stuff, but just haven't had the heart to get this. Maybe after the new year, but anything associated with L=M just leaves me cold.

Christmas greetings from the boys copied below. Here's hoping for the new album in 2011. As much as anything else, this thread needs something new to discuss!! 15 december 2010 - Christmas Starts here |
|
|
|
Back to reality after the thoroughly enjoyable Deep Purple tour. Just
like to say a big thank you to all Marillion fans around the world for
the support over the last few decades and looking forward to seeing a
lot of you at the conventions...
Have a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous new year...
All the best.
Ian
I'd like to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas. I'm having
a quiet one hunkered down with family in my little Northamptonshire
village and I'll be as happy as an idiot! I'm not finished yet though as
I have 3 Christmas shows to perform - 2 in St Brides Church, Liverpool,
and my last gig of the year at the Garage, Islington - all this
weekend. Come and feel the love!..
Monumental thanks to all who came to Zoetemeer (possibly the best h
Natural gig ever!) and Milan (arguably the most enthusiastic crowd
ever!) last weekend. I remain indebted to you all.
Again, Merry Christmas, loves, and I'll see you all soon..
h
Right, my Christmas starts here. I had a really nice evening at the
Peel last night playing the second Defence Of The Realm gig. It had
character, mainly because we only managed a quick run through some of
the songs in the afternoon round at Craig's place. Thanks to all
involved and those of you who turned up, specially the guy from
Philadelphia. Now that is commitment.
Now I really must write my Christmas cards and feed the Goose!
Have a very Merry Christmas.
Pete
Good to be back home after the Deep Purple tour. I've been finally
getting round to scanning in and organising images from my photo archive
for the Postcards from the Road photo book I've been talking about
doing for the last ten years. Also trying to
decide the format for my British Guitar Academy web site. The first
two workshop dates are on the 5th and 12th February next year and I'm
setting up in my studio at home to film some video content for the site.
Any suggestions of what you'd like to see (particular songs or
techniques/sounds) should be sent to [email protected]
Looking forward to a great 2011!
Merry Christmas
Steve
Things are winding down for Xmas in camp Marillion. Once I’ve
finished the usual rounds of Christmas drinks with the likes of PPL,
FAC, MMF and any other TLA’s (3 letter acronyms) I can think of it’s off
up to the snowy wilds of Northumberland for a
traditional Christmas with the family. I may have to go easy on the
gorging over the festive season as I’ve just found out I have a place in
the London Marathon next April. I’m raising money for the NSPCC so if
you are feeling charitable, as most
people are at this time of year, head over to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MarkKe11y and be the first to sponsor me.
Have a fantastic Christmas and see you in 2011.

I watched bits and pieces of it while putting my discs back on the shelves (just had our house carpeted). It's a nice little piece of Marillion memorabilia, but nothing nearly as polished as to what we're used to with Marillion DVD's. Even last year's Snow de Cologne was superb quality. The difference with that is they recorded it specifically to be released as a DVD; whereas, this looks like just a few cameras were set up to just capture the performance and nothing else. It's fine by me. Just a nice little piece to have.
The band looked pretty frustrated with the sound, though.
