Pujols to the LAA Angels! So, he goes from playing for my most hated manager (La Rusa) to maybe the next most so (Scioscia). Knowing the eye Scioscia has for talent Albert will probably be on the bench for half the year ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) . |
Buehrle is actually somewhat useful if you use him the right way and have the right team around him... He had an ERA way under 3 at home this year, so if you streamed him against weak teams and at home he could have helped moderately with wins and pretty well with ERA. You just have to have a few high-K relievers to even out his absolutely atrocious lack of K's. Personally I hate using pitchers with K/9 under 7 if I can help it, but every now and then, assuming you get them cheap, they can be sneakily decent.

Yeah seriously, but these baseball players are the worst. Guess I can
understand why, without any cap limits you are free to sign em
for....well lets say $254 million. Outrageous.
Buehrle isn't a terrible pick up, as you said can be useful just not greatly. I know the Yankees faithful floated his name around but ultimately came to the same conclusion, wasn't worth it.
Almost a shame to see Pujols go, I'm a random fan of the St Louis teams but watcha gunna do?
Random: Glad to see that Symph X being played man :D

Yeah, baseball is a ridiculously lucrative business... Part of me wishes I would have tried to take a shot at getting drafted somewhere... I didn't have hardly any scouts come see me in high school, but when one season of MINIMUM salary in the majors is as much as what I make in 9 or 10 years at my current job... Ridiculous! With his new contract, Albert Pujols will make more in one single at-bat than I'll have made this entire year. I would say that for that kind of money you can't really blame him for leaving St. Louis, but heck, they offered him just about as much. My guess is that he's thinking that by going to an AL team he can DH the last few years of his contract to stay healthy and keep his offensive numbers up. And yeah, Symphony X's Facebook polls about what songs fans want to see live from each album have got me in a Symphony X mood lately. Usually Symphony X is mainly reserved for my car because it gets me pumped on the way to work, but it's good pretty much any time of day.

I don't know how to feel about the Pujols deal.......I would be safe in saying the M's here in Seattle could possibly never win the ALW in the next 5yrs easily now. It will take 90+ games to get that banner for sure, Ms and As are far from any winning season of that caliber.
I am happy that I will get to see one of the greatest (if not thee) hitters in MLB come to Safeco field and probably own that stadium. I don't believe this deal will be any sort of a bust, unlike the A-roid/Texas deal......A-roid had no intention of staying with Texas after a couple years, he wanted the NYY.
I don't think Pujols will go that way......the A-roid deal just happened to soon.
Plus after 4-5 yrs Pujols can quit playing 1B and be the Angels DH for easily another 4-5 yrs and still mash..

Yeah it's insane. As for the moving...well this is just my personal opinion but I dont NEED a lot of money. In general. So, if I was Albert Pujols, (or lets say CC Sabathia since he really loved Cleveland) I'm already making a sh*t ton of money. Sure, they are offering me $30 million more, how can you not take it? Or the classic "business/family decisions" line but you already make more in year than I can even dream of in my life....I wouldn't go solely because "well how can I turn down that much more?" Now I would go to Yanks for the history and all that, but just me. Never know Catcher. The biggest payrolls in 2010 were who? Yanks, Sahx and Phillies. How well did they all do? Or look at my Yanks the last decade or so. All I ever hear about is "waaaaaaaaaaaaaah baaaaaaaaahh they got so much money" but it never does any good. Playoffs every year? Yeah like you need $500 million to do that. Especially just to lose first round every time? I'll take my 90s Yankees over this "team" one million times. We are stuck with him...but in fantasy land I'd drop A rod in a heartbeat. If anything WE got the raw end of the deal ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) he used to be a great player. Perhaps even a 5 tool player. He may have been better at the start of his NYY career but he never "wowed" any of us and now...he doesn't hit for average, he doesn't steal, he's a pure power hitter which means 7 times out of 10 its a long hit...caught at the wall. He certainly isn't clutch and I'd say a distraction. Being the class act he is, Jeter says "all is good" and that stuff but Alex created a huge rift with him, and just brings so much negative attention off the field, as never gelled with the team I do think.

^ Well the money I never pay attention to, because in any career, usually money wins out. I mean if you are making $50K and another company offers you $75K with some moving expenses would you take it? Most probably.....higher pay means more going to your retirement account, so there are added benefits, even if maybe at first you don't like the new city.
Now if you are making $125K and someone offers you $200K? Yea I bet anyone jumps on that in a heartbeat! Now I agree with your point....if I am making $5MM and another company offers me $5.5MM, but I am perfectly happy and like where I live..pretty good chance I pass, don't need it....but make that $7MM......I'm gone ![Big smile Big smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif) .
100% agree with the A-rod performance comments, he's just a very good player right now, nowhere near an impact player and probably should be traded off (not sure if possible) to a team that needs some help. Jeter is beyond class act......shoulder to shoulder with Ripken for sure.

Oh absolutely. You also are talking about us real life folk If I'm a baseball player and making $50 million, and am offered $75 million.....well that's huge, but 50 mill is a damn lot for me. If I loved where I was I'd stay. Now like I said, if I was playing in Tampa Bay and got an offer from the Yankees, even for the same money (hypothetically) I'd go for the history they have and the city of New York. I assume I'm biased ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) Yeah, it's been talked about endlessly in this area and like it or not...we are stuck with him. He's not the only problem of course but still.....

I think it depends on where you are moving though. $5MM in the midwest is worth a lot more than $5MM in New York City or California or Chicago where the cost of living is much higher. That was a huge raise for Pujols, but the cost of living in California is probably crazy compared to the cost of living in Missouri. I've heard it said that my $150,000 home here in Michigan would cost $400,000 to $500,000 in California.

Very true Scott, and maybe for a lot of players an issue but.....$254 million. I don't think any cost of living adjustments is hurtin his wallet.

Yeah, Scott, I don't think "cost of living" factors in when you're talking this amount of money. $25 mil a year gets you nice sh*t wherever you are.

True, but at one time I had heard St. Louis had offered a similar contract and then I heard that they didn't, so I don't know what they actually offered him. On the sucky side, Miguel Cabrera will probably never win an AL MVP, Silver Slugger, or be the All-Star starter for the next 10 years.

Well for us pooor folk the cost of a house is HUGE concern when moving, like Scott says, he could not replace his house out west or in NY.
I guess my point is there is a business side to all pro athletes (plus a greedy agent) where they ARE a company. Its PUJOLS COMPANY, Inc. And he sees a money making opportunity for his business....he took it. And I think his situation is a bit different, he just won a WS...so he was probably ready for a move, especially when all year long the Cards apperantly did not want to lock him up as he may have expected them to do, and maybe for less money.
He is latin, he will do very well in L.A. and be very comfortable.........in his $4MM house, chump change for him.

All true gents, just most talks are pointless for the A rods, CCs (and now Pujols) that even for baseball have insane loads of money. No doubt sports are as much business for them as entertainment for us. My point was just I dont care about money THAT much. I'd be content with 20mill ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif) and wouldn't feel obliged to move. Esp if I won a WS. Now....St Louis vs LA? IDK which city I'd prefer though obviously much "more" in LA.

One major earthquake and California could be an island sometime in the next 10 years.

Good thing too, Arizona has been waiting patiently enough for a beach.
I have even gotten over my hatred of the Diamondbacks.

They won't, most likely, because it's never been done, but... In a situation where Matt Kemp clearly had the best season in the majors last year offensively and was better than Braun defensively, too, I think they ought to consider passing it to Kemp. It'd feel like a cheapened award, but Kemp deserved it to begin with.
