Fat chance. Wink  Hope springs eternal though.

I am listening to the Yankees and Tigers game, and the Tigs just gave up their first run of the Spring.

There's talk already if the Cards fall out of contention that Carpenter would be dealt to the Yanks to save the 15M to sign Albert for 2012...but then again if they dump Carpenter why would Albert stay?

He went 4-1 with a 3.80 ERA in 64 games as a key contributor last season for the National League East champions.

He earned $2 million as a fungible middle reliever. We have a bunch of identical guys ready to start in the majors. He was delaying their development and being overpaid.

LOL  Must be nice to have an embarrassment of riches within a pitching staff.  I'd kill to have a middle reliever with an ERA under 5.00.  Durbin was actually a pretty decent pitcher for the Tigers when he was here in 2007.

Oh and really, the Phillies should have quite a year.
No way to know how it'll translate into real life, but under 100 wins for them have to be a disappointment.

A bit back on a station here, he was comparing the '11 Phillies pitching staff to the Braves of the early 90's and how they are at least equal, plus the offense. Quite a scary team.

Amazing what happens when a team spends money! Wink

I always enjoy watching but I guess I don't really get excited over the early season either. Season is so damn long.

I love pre-season baseball, and the first two months of the season are the best, because after that the Tigers are usually eliminated and it doesn't really matter any more.

Just a word of warning:

To those who are fans of big market teams that are successful (aimed primarily at Pat but its for anyone) I am going to disregard your farm system, and important small time moves that contributed to success and just claim "Yeah it's easy to win when you have a lot of money right?"

And I will insist upon it rabidly. Try and defend the team and provide truth if you'd like, I'm just going to ignore it and continue.
See how all the Yankee haters like it...

Well, you know what they say, "hope springs eternal."

I think the Tigers' chances are better this year, though, with a better pitching staff (with the addition of Benoit and Penny),  the addition of Victor Martinez, and another year under the belt for some good rookies from last year. But it 's also the deletions of a helluva lot of dead weight that makes this team better: Gerald "Pop-up" Laird, Adam "Sac-bunt" Everett, Dontrelle "Scared of my shadow" Willis, Jeremy "the operation didn't work" Bonderman, and Armando "I almost pitched a no-hitter, just like I almost pitched in every other start" Gallaraga.

As I stated earlier, I think the Tigers will surprise folks this year. Of course, I've said that every year since 2006 at least.

The Tigers are big market for the Central Division, but small fry compared to the Yankees and the Red Sox.  I was just answering to the reference of Yankee haters. I am a long-time card carrying member of the Yankees' Hater Club.

I love the start of the baseball season.  Even for the worst teams out there, at least it signals a change in weather.

I'll try to keep my expectations low for the Blue Jays (damn AL East!!), but I'll definitely watch more games this year.  I barely had the time last year (at least it felt like it), but would always catch the highlights, and I did catch one live.

Jose Bautista signs a big contract, but should I cut his homerun total in half for the upcoming season?  I'm not as familiar with the league as I am with the NHL or the MLB, but we supposedly made some upgrades to our bullpen, but we lost Scott Downs.  A new manager as well with John Farrell, so this will be an interesting year.

I live in a major market but have a chump as an owner.  He just went through a divorce, care to guess who I am talking about?  Signs a bunch of potential has beens for one year contracts while trying to borrow money again against the team.  What is he going to do when the great young talent starts to leave?   Already Russell Martin is history and James Loney appears to be average at best and  then signs Kershaw to a one year $500,000 contract.  WTF? The cupboard is pretty bare in the minors too.
We used to be the model franchise that everyone wanted to be like now we are not even the favorite team in town anymore. God what a waste this is.  Angry

Time for 2011 Pre-season Playoff Predictions

AL
East - Boston (sadly)
Central - Chicago (Minnesota will probably win but I just look at their team and can't see why)
West - Texas
Wild Card - New York (Tampa has taken steps back this year and Minnesota just doesn't have much going for it and this is the year it catches up to them)

NL
East - Philthadelphia
Central - Cincinnati
West - Colorado
Wild Card - Atlanta (one of the worst teams, top to bottom, to ever win a World Series will not get the chance to repeat)

I'm also taking the under on 100 loses for the Suckos this year: predicting 63-99 Tongue

Opening Day for the Blue Jays vs the Twins.  Looking forward to this one.  I'm especially anticipating seeing the young starting rotation.  Brandon Morrow is going to miss his first start, but I think that's all.  Here's hoping Ricky Romero and Brett Cecil build on their solid seasons of last year, and I wonder what rookie Kyle Drabek will have in store.

One game at a time, and Romero gets the start today. GO JAYS!!! Smile

Why is there such ugliness when it comes to sport rivalries?.....

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Los Angeles police are looking for two men who beat and critically injured a http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/sfo/" rel="nofollow - San Francisco Giants fan in the Dodger Stadium parking lot after the opening day game.

Sgt. Sanford Rosenberg says two men in Dodgers clothing followed three men in Giants gear as they walked to their car after Thursday night’s 2-1 Dodger victory.

Rosenberg says the attackers yelled slurs against the Giants and began kicking and punching the men.

One victim suffered a head injury and was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Rosenberg says the injury is not life-threatening.

Investigators don’t have the identities of the suspects and are asking anyone with information on the attack to call police.

Exciting start to the Phillies' season. Shouldn't have been as exciting as it was.

Houston is using Brandon Lyon as their closer?   He was a decent pitcher for the Tigers a couple of years ago, but not closer material.

Yeah, that was a nice comeback, we watched the latter half of the game at the office with some beers.

I don't know why they pulled Halladay so early (didn't see the first half of the game) - seemed like he was pitching well, what happened?

Not much to complain about aside from a few fielding errors.  Ricky Romero looked pretty good for the most part.  Arencibia on pace for a 324 HR 810 RBI season LOL.

Royals looking good tonight, hitting is getting to the point where it can somewhat back up the good pitching part of the team.

Kyle Drabek pitched well for his first career victory.  Jayson Nix has a good game at the bat, and was impressive in the field.

Tigers and Yankees are Fox Sports game of the week.  Tigers went out 1-2-3 in the 1st inning and looked pretty weak doing it.

Glad to see that the Tigers ability to be completely embarassed on national TV hasn't changed this year.  And why the hell did they sign Brad Penny.  What a sh*tty pickup he was.

If the White Sox don't run away with that divison then they are doing something very wrong.

Got home, turned on the Yankee game to see A-rod in his usual form. Hitting a good ball that falls just short of the wall.

Gotta love it.

Well at least admit it. I love when people use "a roid" even though we all know at least 75% (and I am being naively optimistic) of players have done it. Hell its probably more like 90%

And yeah no one likes him. I certainly don't. But us Yankee fans have to at least tolerate him for his skill though he's not in his prime.
I mean he used to be a HR machine AND hit for average (or was capable of) not to mention was a great base stealer and was good in the field.
Decent fielder, but he's pretty much only power now and never steals. Problem with becoming a power hitter is yeah, he always hits bombs but most fall just short of the wall, and of course result in an out. My faith in A-rod is low, unless there's people on base, really his only use now.

It's ok, thankfully the Tigers seem content on destroying their lead.
Edit: ah you beat me to it since I made this rambler LOL but yeah, I think being ahead freaked you guys out because that was one helluva bad inning.

Had to lose sometime. Cry

Brett Cecil was shaky in his first start of the season, and John Rauch gave up a costly solo HR in the 9th.  The bats made it interesting in the 9th by getting a run, but Adam Lind grounded out with the bases loaded.  Exciting finish.  Jose Bautista had a good afternoon on his bobblehead day, hitting a homer and a single plus showing good patience for a walk in the 9th.
