Godspeed's drummer is actually pretty damn good
as is the one from Sigur Ros (listen to Untitled 8) I can't think of any that prominently feature drums though...the math bands seem to have more of a tendency to have more technicality involved than post-rock bands |

for drumming in post rock the best two I can think of are 65daysofstatic and Russian Circles also The Samuel Jackson FIve has a more prog/jazz style drumming that you might like, they are one of the most interesting post-rock bands around for sure |

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I've listened to all of them except Tera Melos, Toe, and If These Trees Could Talk. I'll put them on my list of bands to check out!
what are some good math/post-rock bands that aren't too speedy. it seems like some of the math rock bands i have checked out play in a very fast tempo and that becomes annoying after a while. 65daysofstatic is an example of that, although they have their slower post-rock moments which are nice. i get the impression that their drummer is on meth sometimes though. playing drums fast doesn't impress me. drumming in odd time-signatures and with lots of polyrhythms is what i really enjoy (Oceansize drummer is the perfect example). Especially when there is a good band around him. i think i'm looking for bands that are similar to Oceansize's slower post-rock like material (like "I haven't been...the claw for ages", one of the most beautiful post-rock song's i've heard). Also like NOI's "For a Grammar of New Feelings" EP. Thanks again for all the help! Edited by Oceansizzle - March 27 2008 at 22:55 |

I liked the drummer in Red Sparowes at the soundless Dawn. But their drummer from their second album wasn't that good. It's rhythm are to repetitive at least for me. |

well, definatelly check out Battles, Don Cabellerro, and Oxes. But don't expect emotional post rock moments, there won't be any.

I'm listening to The Samuel Jackson Five - Easily Misunderstood, and really enjoying it right now! This is pretty much the style i've been looking for: jazz/math/post-rock. props for the recommendation! I like how it's upbeat but not too fast. Rocks pretty hard at times and definitely a cool jam sound without being too repetitive. its A.D.D. accessible
I liked the battles album, but i don't think i'd listen to it much. its a little too much for me. pretty much no recognizable or memorable melody. I will check out the other two though, thanks! Edited by Oceansizzle - March 27 2008 at 23:31 |

Math rock drummers are something else entirely and always exciting to listen to. Don Cab and Hella are both pretty incredible.

I think Isis's drummer really stepped it up for ITAOT. Also, Grails has a good drummer. (nothing too technical, but i dig his style) Those aren't math-rock related btw.
Very much so, i think.
Yeah, he plays some nimble; off time rhythms, similar to Danny Carey of Tool. (not saying he's better or worse, i know DC is very popular)
Oh yes. I'm not familiar with Hella ,(i suppose i should be checking them out again) but Don Cab's drummer blows my mind. Edited by Dominic - March 28 2008 at 02:04 |

I just realized Baroness were added to the archives some time ago. Any fans here?
I know I've been remiss in reviewing albums for a long time, but I should break that streak and review the Red Album. They're added here under experimental/post metal, but they're not really post-metal, more like progressive psychedelic sludge/stoner metal. The Red Album is quite a piece of work and I'd recommend it to fans of progressive heavy music who maybe just want to rawk.
Also, I 'm going to see them tonight! Pumped!

Once they were cleared I had to put them somewhere and Exp/Post Metal was the only appropriate sub genre for them at the present.
If you like Red Album try to track down their ep's "First" and "Second",they are excellent. |

Sweet, man thanks for adding them! great addition. The show was great. These guys absolutely kill live. It was also at a really small local venue so that made it even better. I actually ended up talking with one of their guitarists for about 10 minutes while standing in line for the bathroom . They had some really great local bands opening, including my friend's band, Onodrim. I was hoping they would have those earlier EPs for sale at the show, but all they had were the Red album and some early split EP with only 2 baroness songs. |
