I am probably putting this in the wrong place, but this will probably rouse some good debate.
So, I got Isis' Oceanic about three weeks ago, I put it in a poll the day I got it with a handful of other albums. After all this time, I decided that this album was easily my favorite of the nine or ten I put up (even though it has like a 3.6 rating which is preposterous). I am also getting some of their other albums too soon.
I wanted to know about other post rock/metal bands that are out there that are as good as Isis. I cant really tell whats post and whats experimental in our post/experimental genre on the front page. I have some Pelican, who are good, but don't really have the substance behind them that Isis does, and Neurosis is hardly post rock, at least given to the rising isn't .
Any suggestions or questions?

Oh my, where to begin?
A recent favorite of mine is Rosetta... they're a bit simpler in philosophy than Isis, but their sound is just huge. They're just epic post-metal with as much reverb as possible on every instrument, and lyrics based on Arthur C. Clarke stories. "Metal for Astronauts", if you will. Their sound took a bit of getting used to, even for an Isis fan like myself, but I still think they're pretty great.
Their debut LP "The Gallilean Satellites" is their best IMO... better than their more recent release. It comes as 2 discs: one is a straight post-metal disc, the second is more experimental, dark ambient material... and they're meant to be played simultaneously! A great listening experience!
Other than that....
Minsk Callisto Cult of Luna MARE Russian Circles

You might like http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2513 - CULT OF LUNA and http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2721 - CALLISTO
Others that might interest you are:
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2498 - RED SPAROWES , http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=3178 - ROSETTA , http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2560 - RUSSIAN CIRCLES , http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2904 - GIANT SQUID . (I'm forgetting some, I know).
I wouldn't judge Neurosis solely on that last album (and they're not supposed to be post-rock). Try http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=11860 - The Eye Of Every Storm http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=11861 - Times Of Grace and http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=11859 - Souls At Zero

Hmm... that's actually pretty tough sometimes unless you've got a really good indie music store nearby. I wouldn't count on finding any at Best Buy.
However, their individual band sites and label sites are reliable and have good service.
A good start is Translation Loss Records http://www.translationloss.com/ - http://www.translationloss.com/
Hydra Head http://www.hydrahead.com/ - http://www.hydrahead.com/
there's more, but those are a good start.

Mogwai is awesome, but definitely not metal. They're one of the archetypes of post-rock. very big, lots of dynamics (heck, they practically invented the loud-soft-loud thing.) I'd recommend Happy Songs for Happy People.

Maybe we can turn this into the post rock appreciation thread, and the post rock/experimental appreciation thread can be the experimental appreciation thread.
My band is doing one instrumental, where one section is very very post metaly! If you were to hear just that one section, you would think you were listening to Isis.

Good stuff. I'd love to hear it.
I started a heavy post-rock band recently (not really metal, but often heavy). I started a thread with a link to some of our rehearsal recordings here: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=42158 - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=42158 but no one seems interested
We've written 2 songs since then, both of which are quite awesome, but we don't have any good recordings of them yet.

Post-metal is my favorite genre of metal as well (along with doom and other slow or avant-garde bands)!
I'll try to give you a full list of the bands I know of along with others closely related:
Rosetta Manatees Callisto Isis Cult Of Luna Minsk Mare Kongh The Pax Cecilia (giving their latest album for FREE. See details in their website) Irepress Russian Circle Tephra Omega Massif Empires Adai Baronnes Lorus Bossk Intronaut Neurosis Tides Pelican The Morningside (you can download their album for FREE http://www.troublemind.piterpen.ru/music.htm - here ) Khoma (the only post-metal band I know of with CLEAN vocals) The Ocean Keelhaul Mouth Of The Architect Battle Of Mice
The ones underlined are recommended for starters on the genre.
I hope that this list will help you in your adventure through the genre.
BTW, I'm trying to promote those bands by adding them since many of them aren't really in the archives.

Most people who like this "post-rock" bands pretend they're listening to 100% Prog bands, and they haven't even heard or like Prog Rock...so how could they know what's Prog about?...
If you have understood and of course enjoyed Prog Rock first, "post-rock" isn't the big deal really, it seems you're only listening to this "post-rock" stuff, I recommend you guys listen to some Prog Rock.

I'd just like to say that in no way, shape or form are Kayo Dot and Maudlin of the Well Post Metal. MotW is an Avant-garde metal band and Kayo Dot are an avant garde band with metal tendancies, with the last two troacks on Dowsing Anamone... being the only ones with some Post Metal influence. IMO.

A friend of mine, who is in his late 40s, loves Kayo Dot and Godspeed. He has listened to prog and jazz since he was 15, and is now mostly into classical music, though still with a love for prog such as Gentle Giant, Tasavallan Presidentti, King Crimson etc. I think it's a question of musical imagination...
Anyway, as I mostly like the more experimental side of prog metal (besides bands like Opeth and Enslaved), I find the new categories very useful

no, PHP.
see, you come into a thread where civilized people are discussing music that they enjoy, and that is widely regarded as modern progressive music.
Then you, with your out-dated notion of what constitutes progressive music, and the aid of your lack of self-control, decide to post saying that everything we've been discussing is irrelevant because it doesn't match what you think.
You are not contributing to conversation, apart from taking attention away from music and putting it on yourself. You are a classic example of an internet troll.

that's wonderful for you. I'm glad you like opeth, they're a great band.
However, just because YOU don't like the post-rock sound, doesn't make it an objective fact that post-rock is not progressive music.
It's your loss if you don't like it, I don't care about that. What I do care about is you hijacking threads in which people are discussing music that they like. I don't go into every thread about a neo-prog band ranting about how much I don't like neo-prog. I just stay out.

It's your loss if you don't like it, I don't care about that. What I do care about is you hijacking threads in which people are discussing music that they like. I don't go into every thread about a neo-prog band ranting about how much I don't like neo-prog. I just stay out.
Please endeavor in the future to recognize the difference between facts and opinion. |
However "post-rock" is more related with alternative music than to Prog Rock...
Some guy (a Cult of Luna, post-rock fan) told me this:
"Not everything that is listed in PA is Prog, you must be aware of that... Post-Rock isn't Prog; it could have lots of textures, long tracks, and not so simple structures...but in the end, and out of that it doesn't look like Prog at all"
What do you think about that?

So anyway,
I listened to The Pax Cecilia for the first time last night, and I was terribly impressed! They are one of a few bands in the caliber of EitS when it comes to conjuring emotion out of thin air. I only heard what was on their myspace page, and can't wait to hear the whole record!

Yeah.... they're not really post-metal, but they're heavier than a lot of post-rock bands.
To get an idea of the sound, take all the biggest aspects of bands like EitS, Mono, Mogwai, then make the loud parts louder and the soft parts softer, and string it together into three 15+ minute epics.

I think you should get their most well known album, "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw" A wonderful album. Very punchy. Great for headbanging.
Mogwai is quite tricky... Either "Happy Songs For Happy People" or "Rock Action" are good places to start. If you don't like them still then check out their debut and see if that convinces you.

My favorite genre of metal!
|
Great list.
I'd add
Neurosis (post-metal's roots)
Mouth of the Architect
Pelican
Red Sparowes (slightly heavier form of post-rock)
Jesu (so so soo good)
But Isis are indeed the kings of post-metal IMO.

Not often metal as some of the other artists, but Explosions In The Sky has to be the greatest post-rock band of all time. I only have Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Pelican, and I love it all, but hands down to EITS.

plus the mastering is not super sickeningly loud so it'll allow for more dynamic range when you turn up that knob to 11 to soak in da power!!!!!

I have listened to it three times,I would probably give it four and a half stars. The only problem keeping from from knowing the album isnt a masterpiece is because it falls into the trap of hypocracy.
They have beautifully toned lead gutars, and a not so distorted rythym section, keeping the atmosphere on the otherwise positive side. Then come the very hardcore like vocals, very gutteral and harsh, making the moment more oxymoronic. Other than that, fantastic album!
