Chris S was a pioneer - most my bass heroes cite CS as an influence........

Helmut Koellen is up there with Greg Lake. Hats-off.......
Today, and the last few months, I nominate Dick Lovgren (Meshuggah).   
It boils down to whoever is your select bassist from what you're listening to.
Nick Beggs is truly one of the best........

Sorry if I tend to over-emphasise and obsess a bit about it; it's my nature, I guess. 
         I would also like to give honourable mention to Wolfgang Stocker of Eloy, Furio di Castri from Dedalus, and Wolfgang Schmid of Passport.

I'm not going to vote (Squire obviously has an established lead) but I'll at least mention the bass players I find the most interesting. My top 2 prog bassists are Squire and John Wetton, who I'm surprised wasn't included in this poll. Some of the stuff he did with King Crimson live is extraordinary. For non-prog bassists, my favourites are Berry Oakley (Allman Brothers Band) and Rob Grange (Amboy Dukes, Ted Nugent).

I voted for Squire to get my foot in the door, but a couple of my faves - Geddy Lee, John Wetton - aren't there. Geezer gets honorable mention because N.I.B. was the first thing I learned on bass!

I originally wasn't going to post, but happened to throw on Steve Hillage's Fish Rising, and felt like I had to vote for Mike Howlett. He also played with Gong, with and without Daevid Allen, but I didn't realize (until I looked at Wikipedia) that he also produced A Flock of Seagulls and other acts from that era. His playing on Fish Rising is just so good - just busy enough to be interesting, he also plays pretty hard on some of the stuff. A very dynamic player, he also improvises with the basslines, especially under solos, even though the music is quite structured. A player after my own heart!

He took what Squire made and ran with it. Such a great player. Excited for his new album with Terry soon.

Gotta mention Pete Trewavas, Geddy Lee, Cameron Hawkins and Richard Sinclair too. Richard is super underrated - he OWNS that bass.

Philippe Bussonnet (Magma, One Shot)

The dude is an absolute monster on the bass.  I've seen many great bass players in-concert (and I play bass myself) and that guy is just on another planet.  In my book, no one even comes close, not Squire, not Levin, not Wooten or Pastorius or any of the other greats of the Low End.  Bussonnet is king.

If there are any doubters, I'd urge them to watch Magma's Trilogie au Trianon DVD.

Chris Squire from the list! If Geddy Lee or Nick Beggs were on the list, it might be a tougher call. Outside of the prog world, the Ox took some beating!
