Sorry for my first vote...  Chris Squire is naturally for me the best bass player  . And then is Ray Sulman, the brillant bassist- violonist-guitarist-flautist-singer-trumpetist !If you like some other bassists, name them please and check a "default" player in the above list. Thank you. |

I'm still going to vote for Squire, although I think there are several listed here who are better than he is. Last time I said Hugh Hopper...I think I'll stick with him, though I'm incredibly tempted to switch to Richard Sinclair. I might do that too. Others I enjoy: Philippe Bussonnet, Jannick Top, Bernard Paganotti, Sasaki Hisashi, Kazuyoshi Kimoto, Kengo Sakamoto, and Nasuno Mitsuru. They're all in various Zeuhl/Avant Garde bands. Hugh Hopper. I've never liked Chris Squire. Ten on the skill level....pretty low on the taste/feel level. Same with Wooten...I mean yeah, he can absolutely destroy physically, but he's like the shredder equivalent of a bassist. It's impressive in a physical movement kind of way, but not musically at all.

Personally I don't see how anyone could vote Lake for his bass playing 'abilities'. It always seemed to me he did that just because it was easy to do while singing. Schizoid Man was good, I'll give him that. But I've literally never heard him play anything else that piqued my interest.
How can John Wetton not be on this list? (unless I missed him). No one matches his period with Crimson. He was on fire, all the time. Too loud? Maybe. But oh well. And one of the most disheartening things was hearing Steve Hackett's Genesis tribute project and realizing Wetton still completely had the chops. Why does he waste them on stuff like Asia?
Rutherford, though- it took me a while to warm up to him but he is excellent. Arguably a better bassist than guitarist.

Yes, I'm a fan of Wetton since I heard the UK albums, but when I listened Red (after listening UK), his performance really blew my brains, specially in "Starless".
But imagine how good Gary Thain was, that a monster like Wetton, couldn't fit his shoes.

Mike is good and a pioneer of the Taurus Pedals, who can deny it, but never believed he is the level of the top 5 I mentioned, Geddy Lee, Jeff Berlin and a few others who are the peak of the crop (Including John Myung, despite I'm not remotely a fan of Dream Theater).
Of course he's underrated, but still not enough to be considered a one of the bassists in the lonely peak.

Great list, Ivan! As voting for Squire or Pastorius would be way too obvious, I've chosen one of my personal idols - Richard Sinclair, who is also my favourite prog vocalist. Anyway, I am surprised at the inclusion of Giorgio Piazza rather than Patrick Djivas... He's one of the very best bassists I have ever heard (just check his work on Area's Arbeit Macht Frei), yet people seem to forget him way too easily.

Out of these, Chris Squire, but I love Lemmy and Ray Shulman as well. Shulman plays some mean bass on Live at the Bicentennial especially. As far as other favorites, there are simply too many to list.

As a bass player myself, I'd probably put Ray Shulman at the top of the list. There are a number of bass players missing though from the list (especially American and Canadian). As much as I like (and get a kick out of) Lemmy, his style is sort of humourous. He plays it like a guitar, with chords and distortion. It's different, but not necessarily creative. He still gets points for his work with Hawkwind, and being an original. Just like Ozzy, you know there's only one Lemmy. Personality is a bonus.
