Yeah, the LOG fanboyism is quite painful, (and I honestly only like their last 2 albums)
But he really is a great drummer.
Last song on Wrath is a bit progressive and his drumming in one section is thomas haake-esque

And Joel you best be trollin

Been listening to SOAD, (first time in a looong while)

I really like John Dolmayan. Not one of the greats, but I never realized before how much skill he does have.

My vote goes to Portnoy. His work with DT is good, but what made him the best in my book is that he can adapt to almost any genre of music.

haake and carey have pretty recognizable styles and are technical beasts. portny makes me angry when he doesnt give me a headache. i like jazzier styles more but carey gets the edge because he makes the drums sing and thunder at the same time.

I've listened to most of the bands at one time or another, and my favorite of them has to be Thomas Haake.  Second place would have to go to Danny Carey, as I feel like his drumming style is one of the things that makes Tool more than an average metal band.

Ah yes, well personally I hate that band, so it was far from my mind.
You are right though, he is one good drummer!

My vote goes to Portnoy.

Would someone please explain to me exactly what makes Danny Carey so impressive?
(No sarcasm there, this guitarist is sincerely curious about what makes Carey so revered in the drum world)

Brenn Dailor.  His incredibly technical playing style makes Mastodon's very intricate and unusual tempos possible.  He's also crazy fast, does incredible fills almost every other measure, and even throws in the occasional cool cymbal acrobatics.
