Subject: Favorite Metal Drummer

This is a list I just made off the top of my head. It is composed of some of my personal favorites, as well as others I could think of that are pretty good. I tried to get some from all genres of metal. This is was off the top of my head...and I am sure I left a lot of worthy ones off.
So what do you think?

1. Danny Carey 2. Tomas Haake 3. Sean Reinert
BIG fan of Shadows Fall and Jason Bittner but those are my top 3. :)

I'm gonna go with Kollias. His blastbeats are unmatched in creativity
and speed, although my favourite metal drummer ever is John Merryman of
Cephalic Carnage.

His playing is stunningly complex; yet Carey's style just has this groove about it that always leaves me mesmerised. Gotta choose Carey.

With those options, I gotta go with Reinert, though I wouldn't call him a pure metal drummer. Hoglan is a beast and for a man that big he makes it look simple.

Oh yea, I tried to vary the list and get drummers from all over, that play at least some type of metal.
Glad to see some love for Rullo and Hoglan, but I am a little surprised there are no votes for Martin Lopez. Also, don't let Fear Factory fool you! Raymond Herrera is one hell of a drummer!

I chose Portnoy, but not just because of his work with Dream Theater. He is quite a driving force in the band's dynamic, but I admire the tightness and conciseness of his drumming more as it appears in Transatlantic's music. I think you should edit the poll options so it also mentions that he drums for Transatlantic.
Of course, there's a lot more Dream Theater out there to sample for his drumming technique (I can't wait for the new Transatlantic album!), and also, he isn't really a -metal- drummer in Transatlantic, it being a chiefly progressive group. So, it's probably fine the way it is.
But yeah, definitely Mike Portnoy.

JJLEHTO I knew you where a drummer haha. Alright this is too hard, I voted for Derek Roddy because nobody else did, and because he is an insane player, and I love all his youtube videos haha, and he is also a well rounded fantastic player.
But this poll was too hard haha. I love a lot of those drummers so here are my favorites-
Thomas Haake (Meshuggah) Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) George Kollias (Nile) Derek Roddy (Nile) And Chris Adler from Lamb Of God
These guys are Metal Guys to and some of my favorites. Terry Bozzio, Tim Alexander, Gavin Harrison
I also really love Mario Duplantier from Gojira, I've seen him play in person.
But my all time favorites are, and you should be ashamed you didn't put these guys on there haha MIKE MANGINI, Marco Minneman VIRGIL DONATI, and THOMAS LANG!!!!!!!

I don't feel he's a spectacular drummer in the sense he is a technical monster, but without Vinnie Paul's contribution to the groove metal as the drummer of the most influential groove metal band ever, metal would have been different had he not existed. He may not have brought new chops to the table, but the man had truckloads of style and brought that to the table. Proof you don't need all the chops in the world to make your mark as a great musician.

I always thought Mike Portnoy's playing was a bit generic to be truthful, as skilled as he is. He definitely doesn't have such an instantly recognizable style like Haake and Carey.

Lopez actually is one of my favourites ever. His fusing of latin drumming and metal drumming is really unique and stylish. And plus his work on Deliverance and Ghost Reveries is some of the most virtuose playing I've heard in prog metal. You gotta love his signature beat also
As for Portnoy, for me he just sounds like he's trying to fit in with the rest of the prog drummers out there. Doesn't really innovate the drums, just mimmicks a load of styles already used.

Most people probably don't like Lopez or haven't heard of him because he's not popular in the "drumming community" guys like derek roddy, portnoy, haake, those guys are famous drum gods haha.
and by the way the intro to Honor thy father by mike portnoy and dream theater was one of those songs that made me want to be a drummer, when i heard that i was floored and like OH MY GOD!! thats awesome. And mike portnoy is a pretty amazing drummer if you like dream theater and all his other bands, he's got some insane mental and physical chops, has a lot of signature moves like the four on hands, two on the feet, 4 and 2 again around the toms.
thats always fun to hear him use that. and now listen to almost any prog metal or general metal band, and they are all using that lick. I've even heard that same honor thy father lick in the beginning with practically the whole thing plagarized and made into an intro with a change of like one or two beats only haha.

Yea, hawkcwg...Been a drummer for close to 11 years now. Well, started playing a set in 9 grade though...
And I LOVE Vinnie Paul. He may not be a beast, or very technical but I just love the way he sounds. He lays down some great beats.
And Im glad to see some love for Lopez. Yea, I figured Haake, Portnoy, and Carey would get alot of votes, and what do you know! Lopez is not well known in the metal community I suppose, which is a shame...one of my favorites. Too bad he left Opeth, (was it blood poisining?)
Honestly: My favorite is Adler, followed by Haake, then probably Lopez. Bittner and Herrera round out my top 5.
Oh, and this is just a personal thing for me: What do you all think of John Dolmayan? SOAD was my first real band I was into, so I have soft spot for him.

He's really good for playing in a band like that. Always kinda liked his drumming style during the time I listened a lot to SOAD.
EDIT: Oh - and yeah: Vinnie Paul <3 I love the way he used the ride cymbal to create that brutal kind of swing Pantera had.

I actually think there are lots of SOAD songs with excellent drumming from John Dolmayan. Of course, on the more formulaic standard SOAD songs he plays generic drums, but I think he's definetely a huge asset to their more experimental music. He's almost Danny Carey like sometimes, but definetely not on the same level.

Lolwut?
Heavy Metal is a subgenre of hard rock, which is a subgenre of rock. 'Heavy Metal', besides referring specifically to traditional metal, can also be used as an umbrella term for all forms of metal, with the possible exception of the later "extreme" metals (thrash, black, death, supposedly doom). Stylistically, however, I'm pretty sure that all metals are evolved forms of hard rock.

Let me put it this way. Joey is decent. Some of his drumming in Slipknot does impress me. And he's better than Lars 1000X But he's not really great. Especially in concert, every youtube video I see of his "solos" sound like crap. No offense to any Joey fans, but he plays really fast double bass. Outside that it just sounds like randomness, but not good.

I'm not sure if I can vote in this poll just yet, seeing as how I don't really have a favorite drummer as much as I just find some drummers incredibly f**king talented and just enjoy them. With guitarists I can have a favorite because they provide the main melody to the songs, but of course drumming is an essential part to any metal band. Anyway, I digress.
George Kollias is an insane drummer. Just from listening to Papyrus you can tell how brutal his drumming is. I mean, damn. As far as Necrophagist goes they have just as much brutal drumming, but the problem is is that there have been so many drummers in that band I couldn't tell you who's good and who's bad. So I just enjoy. Wintersun has a quite amazing drummer, as well.

I can see why people would like Thomas Lang, but I think he's practised almost to a point where he no longer suits a single piece of music. ;p
anyway I prefer old song-serving drummers like Dale Crover outta the Melvins - practically stationary compared to Lang, but so much more in tune with and appropriate for the music his band plays. I'd rather listen to Varg's drum mishaps than Roddy's almost corporate, inevitable blasting.
i suppose i'm one of those prog fans who, when the Bruford vs Peart battle rages, yells "CUTLER" from the sidelines ;)

My vote goes for Mike Portnoy, he's brilliant. I also like Pantera's Vinnie Paul though. From ones not in the list, I admire Motorhead's Mikkey Dee.

Haake, Lopez and Portnoy are my three top dogs, in no particular order. Haake is the most rhythmically aware, Lopez is wonderfully fluid, and Portnoy has tons of character.

Danny Carey is quite an essential metal drummer, really... But Mike Portnoy have everyhting wrapped up, and always inventing something new!

I'm glad to see so much love here for Lopez. He really was one of my favorites. Truly gifted. Too bad he's out of the band...

It appears Portnoy is pulling closer to Danny.
Why has NO ONE put one up for Chris Adler? He is one great drummer, and very crisp

^ I agree. Despite thousands of mainstream metal fans and LOG fanboys, Adler is worth his stuff. I'd even rate him above Portnoy.

Lombardo for me.Although Slayer can have generic drumming,I love what he did with Fantomas. Also Igor Caverlera is pretty great.I have alot of time for Gene Hoglan as well.
