Tangerine Dream - The Official Bootleg Series Volume 1 (The whole set It's interesting the upgrade of equipment from one concert to the other. It sounds more genuine as well, since "Ricochet" was edited in the studio.)
NOFX - The War on Errorism Mata-Ratos - Banda Sonora do Apocalipse Anunciado The Clash - Give 'em Enough Rope Soft Machine - Fifth (Yes, it has a nice atmosphere, but I feel the songs have a lack of direction, which got even more evident with the abrupt ending.) King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic

Last two days:
Ozric Tentacles - Arborescence (easily one of their best albums) The Gentle Storm – The Diary (heavy version) Renaissance – Novella My Home on Trees – How I Reached Me Bad Acid - Revelations of the Third Eye Weedpecker - II Mantric Muse – s/t Tangerine Dream – Official Bootleg: vol 1: Manheim set (me too, Sam. All those early concerts sound like their own albums, each one different to the last) Alpha Wave Movement – Kinetic (latest AWM album) |

I agree. Their best and most talented line-up. The album sounds really raw. My favorite though is Waterfall Cities...

I see you span them last night - right on mate! It is, just as you and Samuel mention, a compilation of what just as easily could be described as stand-alone albums...which just so happens to be why I adore live TD. Never the same always metamorphosing. One thing I find a little weird is how spacey and freeform the Mannheim cuts feel compared to the more restrained and melodic nature of Stratosfear, which was recorded around the same time. |

^ The part two of the Mannheim set was probably my favourite, it's like an extended version of "Invisible Limits" in reverse. It also sounds very much like Trance near the end

If we're talking 'bout the album...OH HELL YEAH. Renaissance - 'Renaissance': Unequivocally top notch early prog rock from '69. LOVE "Kings and Queens" so much, but seriously the whole album is pretty much ace. I know the cult of Annie is strong here, but still... The Cure - 'Pornography': The repetitive tribal-like drums should have been kinda funny in a way, but to my surprise I felt so damn depressed listening to this. "The Figurehead" must be one of the most effective songs concerning isolating oneself I've ever heard. Geez I feel terrible. Twice - 'Twicecoaster: Lane 1' Sometimes I just wanna hear happy crap, like this gang of Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese girls singing and boogying down together in harmony, and not killing each other. It's all about PEACE man.

Pentacle - La Clef Des Songes - I was SUPER surprised to find a copy of this at the local record store (which is now my favourite record store ever). I was really tempted to pick it up since I'd seen it get rave reviews on the site, and what are the odds of ever coming across it again? But then my conscience kicked in and I decided to give it a try on youtube first to see if it really was worthwhile. And from my inaugural listen, I can safely say that I'll be right back there on the weekend with La Clef Des Songes in my hand walking out the door! Great symphonic prog with some fine bluesy guitar work. Not groundbreaking stuff, but still enticing enough to make me want to head halfway across town to pick it up.
Maelstrom - Way Out - What a fantastic 70's Quebecois release! Very creative, energetic music with plenty of busy arrangements, and superb production to boot. Actually, just from first listen I have little doubt that this is one of my favourite albums out of Quebec. I especially adore the xylophone playing, but the whole sound the band puts forth is phenomenal. IQ - The Wake - Talk about a blast from the past! I haven't heard this since my IQ binge very shortly after I really got into prog back in middle school. As with Tales From The Lush Attic, this is another prime example of top notch Genesis cloning. Honestly, I find that these first two 80's IQ albums do Genesis better than Genesis did on the last few Gabriel-era albums. No silly tracks to bog the flow of the album down, and more power to their performances. The Wake may not come close to the charm or storytelling of, say, Selling England, but if I'm just in the mood to rock out, symph prog-style, this is fine listening. |

Mate, PLEASE tell me you rang the store and asked them to hold it for you?! You'll likely never come across it again, and I think it is an utterly essential symphonic album. I found it for $10 in an Australian store quite a while back (probably about twenty years ago now), at the time I didn't actually know what it was but I instantly recognised the name of the Ange frontman on the back cover (plus there was also THAT front cover!), so I simply blind-bought it. It was sadly so cheap because someone had written on the front cover in thick black pen `File under French Section' (I'm assuming it therefore came from a radio host/DJ's library at some point?), but it played beautifully. I also picked up several prog-folk Malicorne albums at the same time with the same writing on the front, so obviously all from the same collection. I have extra fond memories of the Pentacle one because I was back living at home briefly when I got it, and as I was playing it my Mother stuck her head in the door and said `What a wonderful singer that group has!', and of course she was right. I'll treasure that album forever and always think of that memory when she's gone. |

^ I recall buying my copy of Harmonium's Cinq Saisons around the same time from Antiquarian Records - same texta writing inside the gatefold. Also had a dirty big sticker on the front which I removed with no damage. Ah, the good old days.........
