Howdy all,
Looks like I and a friend of mine are going to make our first-ever Marillion Weekend next April!!! Any recommendations for hotels near the venue? Michael

Man, that's awesome. You won't regret this.
Check out Montreal Rick's thread at MOLF (http://www.marillion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=44899). This is the hotel we stayed at last year. It's 3 blocks away from the venue and very nice. Rick can get us a special rate, too. Down underneath you have a miniature shopping mall and a grocery store, which really came in handy. You don't even need to go outside. Just go to the main lobby and there's a door out back that leads you out right to the mall. It's probably where Kenmar and I will stay. E |

Kenmar, Brutopia was perfect! I'm not a barfly, but I had a blast. The entire upstairs was reserved, they had Marillion playing on the stereo and you could easily talk in your natural speaking voice without the urge to yell.

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum (although a long-time lurker on the PA.com website) so I thought I'd start offering my thoughts on this thread dedicated to my favourite band. :) Maybe I should start with saying that I am a die-hard fan of the Fish era, although I do feel that Marillion have kept their magic in the H-era as well. I've more or less accidentally stumbled on Misplaced Childhood back in 2005 and it has been the soundtrack to a very rocky period in life back then, very similar to F's circumstances when he wrote it (separation w/ a very long term girlfriend & lots of alcohol & finishing the uni and coming to terms with the fact that childhood is, indeed, over.) Anyway... I almost enjoy Marbles as much as MC, and think it's a masterpiece in its own right. But... for some reason the latest two albums (SE and HitR) have been a great disappointment for me. Can anybody help me appreciate these two? I don't even have much of a problem with the actual musicianship, more with the production - too mellow, no real highlights, and for some reason it's harder than ever for me to understand H sing (not being a native English speaker). Well, I hope at least somebody agrees with me that it might be a good idea for the band to change their sound once again. :) |

Hi Aleksandar ! Welcome to the forum. I have found that many Marillion albums are not as immediate as Marbles or Misplaced Childhood, and take time to grow on you. HitR is a case in point. At first I found it quite nondescript, but over time I have found it to be a very rich experience. Perhaps you need more time with it ?
As far as a change in sound for the band....at the 2009 convention in Montreal they did have a Country and Western interlude !!!!!! But somehow I just don't think that is going to stick
Keep listening and have fun.
Steve

Mislim da je prilično normalno da ti se ne sviđa SE ili HitR, jer to su manje neposredna albuma od Marillion. Haha, sorry for my Serbian, I wrote some letters with a friend of mine some year and a half ago, who was Serbian. I am Dutch myself
Well, anyway, I do think it´s quite normal for you not to like albums like those two immediately: it took me some time to get into them as well and as Steve just said, it took him a while too. I think most people have to get into most of the Marillion stuff anyway, 'cause each album is rather different from the previous one, though in most cases you can see the actual mutation/evolvement, which I like. I think you just should listen to them in their own way (for example SE to me sounds more like a late afternoon album, which you should put on your speakers at around 5 p.m. when the sun has cooled down (it should have been a sunny day, though!) whereas HitR strikes me more like a morning album, which you should put on on a sunny day at around 11 a.m. or noon....but hey, that's just what I think).
About h's singing, well, it is true that his singing style has become less articulated on the last album (just like on Less is More), but I personally don't have a problem with that - I still can understand what he's singing; I do think, however - now I've come to think about it - that he moans a bit too much lately, but that's just a tad.
Well, anyway, good luck and above all: ENJOY! ^.^
Joren
PS. For HitR you should focus more on disc 2, I guess, 'cause that one is less spiritual and overall more straight to the point in terms of music and production than the first - conceptual - disc.

Kenmar, the song that impressed me most was "Waiting To Happen". Hogarth just goes off on that one.

Very sparingly, Steve. I just popped it on the laptop and watched parts of the Seasons End set ("King Of Sunset Town", "Easter", "Holloway Girl", "Berlin" and "After Me"). I plan on REALLY delving into it this weekend. 3 day weekend with Memorial Day, so it came just in time. E |

From what little I've seen, its appears to be the most dramatically shot DVD so far with Marillion. Awesome camera angles and the light show is amazing. Very powerful so far. E |

Thanks! 6 hours of music is a lot to digest! From what i have seen and with 14 camera angles, it is the most ambitious DVD yet! |
