Someone said her albums are designed to make a profit, as if this was a bad thing, or as if all other musicians didn't do the same anyway.

Indeed, artists like her are making a big show to help sell their music.  Nothing wrong with that and no gun is put to your head forcing you to buy it.  Ignorance can be a wonderful thing and even once exposed you can still ignore it.  I do have sympathy for Laz. LOL

Who knows, maybe she has a whole basement full of demos of monster complex piano prog but the record company doesn't let her touch those with a ten foot pole.

Both Phideaux and the guy from Frost* fell in that role...
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

And also, you might not be ignorant and yet you might enjoy her pop tunes.

Forgive me for this, but it sounds like a rather accurate description of Peter Gabriel in the Genesis days.  Ian Anderson could sing really well while Gabriel struggled to hit most of his high notes.  Oh, but he was doing all this sublime play acting and dressing up like a flower.

At least Gabriel's costumes had something to do with the music the band was playing. Donkey Face just dresses up for the sake of it plus it's nothing new. Elton Jon started with flamboyant costumes back in the early seventies. There was another hard rock band Black Widow that were using theatrics and costumes in their stage show back in the late sixties & early 70s. Then there' Alice Cooper. But I'm not really complaining about Donkey Face she just gives me something else to hate. But nothing will top Céline on my hate list. Yesterday. I read in the paper that the University of Québec wants to introduce courses devoted to Céline. I had to go to the toilet and spew my breakfast.

Definitely not my cup of tea. But I respect her as a pianist. I hear from a lot of rock fans she is a good song writer and stuff like that.

What would anyone do with a qualification in Celine Dion? What's happening to this world!?

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

once part of m2m as the blond singer

So I wonder why he was not even the frontman initially and poor Anthony Philips was saddled with that role.  They did it to get themselves some attention because Banks and Hackett quietly playing their instruments, and without the flamboyance of an ELP or Yes, might not get the audience enraptured.  It was a well executed, tasteful gimmick but a gimmick nevertheless.  We are as much guided by our subjective preferences and perceptions, with their inherent biases and preconceived notions, as the pop crowd.

I don't see why the prog crowd loves to pretend they make terribly educated choices all the time because if that were indeed true, Gabriel wouldn't be so consistently voted amongst the best prog rock singers of all time.

I love Genesis (all formations), it's probably my favorite rock band alongside DT, but I agree: Gabriel's voice is not the paradigm of versatility or quality. He knows (or knew) how to use his limited voice to the advantage of his band's music, but on a purely technical basis (which this thread seems to deal about, I don't really know anything anymore) he was quite limited. As a purely technical singer, not as a musician,  GaGa is probably better.

^^  Exactly.  Actually, I really enjoy listening to Gabriel but...really, an 'educated' audience would be perfectly ok with him missing his highs or getting there only with an almighty struggle?  What he is doing is flawed, but it's beautiful and that's what rock is all about and what makes it, 'unfortunately', subjective.  And yes, in an audition to perform pop standards, I can imagine Lady Gaga scoring over him quite comfortably.

She's a great singer,  but just because she plays piano while singing doesn't mean she's amazing at it...

Diana Krall plays piano & sings and she's amazing at both even though she's a bit on the commercial side and married that geek.

The video does not tell much about her ability to play piano, though it shows she knows how to use its dynamics. And she sang the song with a lot of feeling and very convincingly. It is certainly not a complex prog song, but I liked it. She definitely has abilities which I would not have expected from her.
