Yes, Dean exactly! Good points here definitely. If the autocensor goes so will many here and I could be first in line - I find it difficult to tolerate the mindless ramblings of puerile comments I am forced to endure on Imdb, Youtube and MMA. Sorry, but the foul language on those sites is unpleasant and really common. It lowers the standard and makes it look like a bunch of morons are online rather than intellects with something important to say. Swearing is cheap and I am slowly getting tired of people doing it just to act tough when they come across as idiots.

Moview with tons of swearing are also really hard to watch - Watchmen was ruined, Wanted was over indulgent with F bombs, and The Departed had too much swearing to enjoy.

I was very disappointed with a DVD I bought for my wife for Christmas. It was Adele Live at Royal Albert - Despite not really into her style of music I was appalled at her language - she dropped the F bomb in between just about every song - and my kids had to leave the room. Thats just ignorant and totally unnecesary. And then she says in an interview she likes to swear. Stupid goose!

Don't get me wrong - I love swearing - I do it all the time and I am never offended by casual swearing, swearing really is only verbal punctuation with no meaning or intent whatsoever. I do not see swearing as common, or lowering of standards or even blasphemous, whereas being called (one of) a bunch of morons, while not being offended by such a comment, I do find it to be, shalll we say, disapointing.

I would never regard any "entertainment" as being ruined by swearing. Some could be greatly improved by it I think.

So censorship is good? ConfusedI agree with most of your list, but I couldn't disagree more with this.

Yes it is good.
I don't think it is.

If you swore at my mother, wife or daughter I would censor you with my fist. That is not a threat, just an example of why we censor swear words.
Yes because actual fistfights might get started... on an internet forum... A lot of computer monitors would be severely damaged but I doubt someone would actually have a bloody nose.... Wink

LOL Now I can understand Dean's good reasons for the auto-censor but ACR, please.... If you are going to watch a grim depiction of crime like The Departed in a movie theater, don't expect "bad person" to be the most serious epithet thrown around.... And in your house, there's always a rating in the box telling you what to expect....

By the way Dean my attack has been on the auto-censor, which "censors" words like sh*t, f**k, etc... (b*****d???? that one I will never understand), not on moderating, which would be necessary when two members start throwing real insults or whatever at each other. Again, I said moderating. Like you and your colleagues do. Moderating usually comes after the fact, censorship acts before it.

Anyway, as I said, with a few things I don't agree, I'm still one of the most consistent members of this forum so I guess I like it a lot...

I'm ashamed to say that I have always had a bad habit of swearing like a sailor.  It is much easier to censor one's self on the interwebz.  It is a habit that I am somewhat able to control, especially when I am around kids, but when my temper hits or I am hangin' with the guys I really could use this guy Censored.

One thing to note is that although we colloquially refer to this as the auto-censor because the result resembles the blue-pencil alterations made to letters-back-home by over-zealous army censors during times of war and other national crisis's, it is not censorship - technically it is a "Bad Word Filter", or swear-filter. Censorship  would involve removal of the entire post, or a significant part of it, and that's not what is happening here - as many have noted, you can tell what the word is, and that has always been the intention... even if you don't know precisely what tw*t is, it's a fair bet it's not twit.

Preemptive moderation is not the only reason for employing a filter, though as a lazy and reluctant moderator that is a damn fine reason, (slapping-down adults for puerile behaviour is not a pastime of mine) - it also allows our site to avoid any nsfw tagging that unfiltered words could result in.

It is more offensive in some countries and/or cultures than others, just because you find it inoffensive does not mean everyone does.

I just never knew w**k was a bad word until I joined this site, and was trying to describe certain Dream Theater instrumental sections. I thought maybe it was a UK thing.

*shrug* - I've never seen it used in a positive way or as a compliment, it is invariably derogatory.
