I am at a stage where I find GG and VDGG "difficult" and Magma "crap" (that's not to say they that are, just that I find them totally dissonant )
However 12 months ago GG and VDGG were at the "crap" stage so I am making progress!
In 6 months time I expect to be liking GG,appreciating VDGG and finding Magma difficult.

Did you try a little Mr. Bungle, Fantomas or Dillinger Escape Plan? Just for variety ...
BTW: Love your Monty Python signature! It really describes forum discussions quite accurately.

No it isn't.
Edit: So you liked none of them (Bungle, Fantomas, Dillinger)?

Fantomas:I have a copy of The Director's Cut,and it's not received my customary "three spin" evaluation as 2 were quite enough for one lifetime....
Like I said,I'm still at the stage where GG are "difficult" to me.Given 5 years (to listen, not confinement) I might just grow into the more esoteric bands.....

That album took more than 10 spins for me to reach the "love it!" status. It's their most difficult album (Dave Lombardo said that this one was the hardest one to play), and if you listen closely, you'll notice lots of little gimmicks happening ... if you can bear the noise, that is.

Ive heard pretty much everything listed (not sleepytime gorilla museum however) and dont find most of it difficult. Love fantomas, bungle, henry cow, all of it (I have listened to 'The Final Cut' all the way through once, and wont do so again untill I get the surrond sound version... and surrond sound... its a toughy ). But the most unlistenable album ever made is not progressive. Its Tom Waits' "Franks Wild Years", easily a 5/5 by the way, the end of the trilogy and deals with broken dreams lost love insanity and suicide. The emotional power is unbelieveable, and the arrangements are brilliant. I honestly go from being sick to my stomach to nearly crying while listening to the album, terrible experiance, and quite possibly the most artistic peice of music ive ever heard.

Hangedman:
If you like Franks Wild Years, do you know The Black Rider, too? I love that album ... but the vocals can make people mad (it get's everyone out of the room quickly when I play it at work).
BTW: Does anyone know Mahogany Songspiel?

Speaking of prog bands: "Invisible Touch" by Genesis is of course the most difficult. It's impossible to get through it!

Present/Univers Zero: BLOODY BRILLIANT but very hard to digest in large doses for me.
Henry Cow: It's Dagmar's voice that keeps me from enjoying them as much as I'd like to.

People are puzzled why I don't dig the Stones, well, I listened to the Stones, I tried, and I tried, and I tried, and--I Can't Get No Satisfaction!

"Most anything with Mike Patton. Particularly Mr. Bungle. Even Fantomas is even easier to listen to than Mr. Bungle. crazy. just nuts"
I disagree. I can always find method in the madness with Mr Bungle. Disco Volante is a bit rough for first time listeners but it shines in the end.
I'll have to put a vote in for Trout Mask Replica. Breathtaking Nonsense mixed with purposeful musical incompetance.

It is difficult to the listen to Magma. I love the music that they make, it's just the vocals really put me off.

I love the voice of Dagmar Krause, especially on some of the records of
the Art Bears. Just listen to how wonderfully she sings the Brecht poem
"On Sucide" on "Hopes and Fears" by the Art Bears (an album that should
be rated much higher than it actually is).

Henry Cow - Western Culture
Where it comes to Henry Cow, I will keep trying. There's something very attractive in the music so that's why I don't give up
