Good lord, we should be proud of Coldplay people! At least they throw out something at least somewhat original into the huge mainstream crowd! Sure Radiohead and Muse are kind of in the mainstream but Coldplay is one of bands who takes the music of Radiohead and makes it more accessible thus creating more Radiohead fans, thus creating more progressive rock fans.
Halfway through this post I got the feeling I was rambling.

Why? I don't have a problem with people disliking Muse- I barely listen to them anymore (though for me they're still the top of these 3). But a lot of people are just saying 'this band sucks', I'd just like to hear reasons and thoughts. |
Specifically, because their lyrics are often atrocious, belted out by a guy who can hit high notes with a usually-annoying sneer, and the music is often too pompous for it's own good.
It often has a condensed epicness feel to it that come off as tacky more often than not.
|
I think you've just described a lot of Prog rock bands - what is the problem with a band that sounds like that again?
|
Muse just has a perfect storm of the annoying indie sneer vocalist, retarded political songs, and--I mean this really, really seriously, keeping in mind how silly it comes from a prog fan--utterly pretentious approach. I get the feeling Bellamy has the emotional maturity of a 13 year old when I hear his lyrics (especially on the last few albums). The music, while sometimes at least affecting on a song or two an album, just feels paper-thin a lot of the time. It's hard to explain. I don't hate the band, but I think it has obvious flaws. I guess I could sum up how I feel by saying they feel like kids trying desperately to fit in with the big boys.

I like how you describe their music as "paper-thin" when it is one of the most full and driving sound any band has ever made. Their lyrics, although commonly on the subjects of apocalypse and politics, match their style of music, very (excuse the term) "epic". But they have many songs that are more low-down and and talk of a wide range of subjects. I understand your opinion but I'm just putting my word in that I think Muse is the best band today, especially in terms of showmanship.
also if you want to hear good lyrics listen to Thrice, especially their new album Beggars. its raging brilliant.

Brian: I think you're getting a bit emotional about Muse but I agree that Thrice are wildly underrated. I think a lot of people here would like them, but for whatever reason, Thrice seem destined to be perpetually ignored. I did a big review of The Alchemy Index in the non-prog review thread and it got zero response. They're like The Wrens or something, just one of those things where a band has the perfect storm of a bad label or an ineffective press agent or a messed up tour schedule or poor timing or bad radio play connections or whatever and the result is that they can make as many brilliant albums as they like and still secure no attention whatsoever.

Sorry to break it to you, but Muse ARE the big boys - they make a lot of money doing what they do.
As for your opinions about their music, you still don't actually justify it, so you come across as the very sneering retard you describe.
Sorry again, but you do.
The description of their music as "paper-thin" is frankly laughable, particularly on the first 3 albums, where the music is self-evidently the exact opposite of what you describe, using what seems to be the simple language of someone deep in the grips of a simultaneous hatred obsession combined with severe denial.
While you're obviously entitled to your opinions, at least make them believable!

LOL I don't hate Muse. If you find my opinions unbelievable, then the fault is with you for not seeing around your own perspective, because I do believe them. When I say "the Big Boys" I'm clearly disregarding fame or money. Muse has tons of fans and tons of money. I'm saying Bellamy tries to be deep, but utterly fails. And does Bellamy not having a sneering, whining, wailing voice? perhaps it's a more negative twist on how he sings, but I'd like to know how many people totally disagree that he sings in such a style. "As for your opinions about their music, you still don't actually
justify it, so you come across as the very blind fanboy you probably aren't.
Sorry again, but you do."

Radiohead is an amazing band.
Muse is a decent band. Coldplay only has one song and they keep re-releasing it.

Which song my friend? I think there is more to Coldplay than most people acknowledge or are willing to acknowledge. And frankly I've tried to listen to Radiohead but really cannot get through an album without pulling my hair out. I had their entire discography at one point and for the most part they didn't do much for me...just my experience

Hate to be obvious, but Radiohead by miles and miles and miles. Really, OK Computer and Kid A are all they're cracked up to be to these ears. One of the greatest bands ever, Prog or not.

Yeah, I'm with DT-PT. Dream Theater is one of the most diverse bands around. I think what you mean is DT never releases their own songs. (Chill, everybody, I'm a fan )
As for Coldplay? I'd like to know which song it is that they keep releasing over and over... Gosh, it must be really well disguised, because I haven't noticed at all.

I agree with the Coldplay part. Most of the people who voted are just judging by their singles, of course that Coldplay is not a Prog band neither they are the most original band around, but they have wrote decent alt. rock songs, and their album Parachutes is pretty much excellent allthrough.

It is sort of well disguised, but you can tell from the mood, the singing style, and the non-diversity that it MUST be the same track.

radiohead is one of my all-time favourite bands. muse is good especially the last album. but why the hell is coldplay here? everyone that likes real music made with ambition and creativity should hate them.

No, not really. I listen to music that brings me pleasure, some bands give me more than others. Coldplay with their debut give me a lot of pleasure, it doesn't need to be ambitious or innovative to give pleasure.
Muse, on the other hand, are way more ambitious and surely more creative than Coldplay, yet I can't stand their music at all.

I'm a fan as well, but there's nothing original about them. Everything I heard on Black Clouds and Silver Linings could be removed and put on to Images and Words and it wouldn't make a difference for either album. There's no diversity AT ALL, nor is their improvement or PROGRESSION from past releases.
