These are bands that are often discussed in PA.  There seems to be a lot of debate about whether they are prog or not.  However, regardless of prog credentials - which do you prefer?

Radiohead by a ridiculously large margin.

I do like all three, though. The other two not so much as of late.

It honestly seems to me that Muse have only written one song their entire career. And Coldplay is some of the most inoffensively atrocious music of our day. But Radiohead has some good songs.

Coldplay, I avoid like the plague.

Muse have had great moments (absolution) now are irrelevant. Radiohead had one moment, now irrelevant. Coldplay is very enjoyable, but nothing else.

None of them shine, but Muse has shined the brightest at least once

Radiohead.

Muse I have time for, they rock hard and have some proggy leanings, but Coldplay leave me..well..cold to be honest. I'm fed up with Chris Martins whinging voice, and the bands predictable formula. A few good songs here and there, but a whole album is too much for me.

I think Blur, evolved and progressed quite interestingly, but they have one ingredient I cant stomach; Damon Alburn. The guy is a very weak singer imo.

I actually like Coldplay, but in these pages this feels like I am admitting to unspeakable sex crimes.  I cannot understand why they elicit such strongly negative opinions (Coldplay, that is - not the unspeakable...erm..).  They are constantly being accused of being bland and wet, but to my ears they are far more melodically inventive than the likes of say...Journey, Boston, Styx or countless other middle-of-the-road, easy-on-the-ear rock bands - many of whom are quite highly rated on this website.  'The Scientist' is a great track! And Viva La Vida has some genuinely progressive moments.  I also like Chris Martin's voice - I think its brittle quality conveys far more genuine feeling and emotion than old foghorn LaBrie for instance.

Close between Radiohead and Muse, although i don't really like either of them that much. In the end I voted for Muse, because I don't particularly like Radiohead or Muse, I feel like with muse has a better chance of growing on me. As for coldplay, they just make my ears bleed.

Muse and Radiohead I like about equally. They're probably my favourite mainstream bands (and the only ones I can actually enjoy listening to). Coldplay... meh. I think A Rush of Blood to the Head is a pretty good album to be honest, but after that they just seemed to get much worse. X&Y is just a very bland pop record and Viva la Vida has its moments but it's still nowhere as interesting as Muse and Radiohead.

The Bends and OK Computer are enough to make Radioheadmy favourite of those three. I'm not very much into Kid A and later albums, except Hail to the thief wich I like, but I still think it's the best of those bands. Coldplay's first and last albums are really good but sometimes I find them a bit boring and bland, and I have to be in a certain mood to listen to them, otherwise I can't stand their music (especially their 2nd and 3rd albums!). I'm not very familiar with Muse music but I've heard a couple of song and I think they're ok.

I like Muse the most, Radiohead had some great moments, but sometimes they're a bit tedious to digest. I like Coldplay too (not sure why, I guess they kind of have that certain atmospheres within melodies that click with me), on a "hum along with a radio" daily basis.

Well...I loved Coldplay when I was a bit younger, not so much now. Radiohead are masters of their craft but I'll have to say Muse being the fanboy I am.

Muse > Radiohead > Coldplay for me although technically you could argue that Radiohead are way ahead.

I enjoy Radiohead the most of these three. Although I do quite like Muse, and Coldplay are OK (sue me). There is a real similarity to Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy's vocals. I used to really like Coldplay a few years ago. They are quite mainstream, and some might accuse them of being too bland, but they do have some good melodies. Martin is a good singer, in my opinion.

My favourite alternative bands probably are Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, and Muse. In that order. I know Radiohead are probably more important and significant, and I respect them for that, but  I like Steven Wilson's voice more than Yorke's.

As for Blur, mentioned above somewhere, I do kind of like them. Albarn can come across a bit of a pillock sometimes, but Coxon is cool.

Radiohead.  While they are very popular, and are often given more credit than they deserve.  I like that they are willing to do some songs outside of the normal Pop single (although I really wish they would do an epic.)  Muse and Coldplay are plain vanilla alternative rock, and never really try to do anything beyond the realms of that genre.

That is the biggest load of crap I've ever head. They explore many different genres. Try listening to some Muse, especially the newer stuff. I don't care if you don't like it, but you should at least recognize the many different genres.

Hey, calm down. I agree with gottagetintogetout on this one.
I mean, they're hardly original, don't offer much outside of 95% of alternative rock bands other than slightly higher order singing, and the only reason I consider them slightly progressive is because they think sounding like Queen for half a song makes them clever, out-of-the-box and clever.

Blending genres =/= progressive.

And before you tell me to listen to them, I own 3 of their albums from when I was much, much more easily impressed by music.

A 3 part symphony =/= progressive, nor does it automatically make a song good, or a band original... Not to mention it was godawful and my least favourite part of The Resistance.

You're probably at odds with most Muse fans then - it's the best part on the album by miles.

I didn't say a 3 part symphony was 'progressive' but it's plain stupid to suggest that Muse aren't trying to do anything outside the realms of their genre when they produced a symphony.

A symphony is associated with classical music, and that's what it sounds like. How is that NOT outside the realms of their genre? A rock band making a classical symphony? Yeah, sounds vanilla to me.

The quality of it in your eyes doesn't divert from the fact that is very experimental for a mainstream band to do.

DIssing Coldplay around here is akin to what you did back in high school and you carried a condom around in your wallet. Sure, it didn't really reflect who you were, but you showed it off anyway and acted like you were getting laid just to score your buddies' approval. If this weren't an exclusively prog community, I think the same members would suspiciously be much more fond of Coldplay.

I think all three bands have their moments, but since I'm not terribly familiar with any of their full catalogues, I cannot honestly vote.

Radiohead.

A true example of a modern Prog band - far superior to all the pretenders (those bands who call themselves "Prog" but only sound a bit like it, or simply play something on the technical side - you know who I mean).

Muse had it for a while, then lost it. Between 2001-2004 they were probably the best band on the planet - and sharing Radiohead's producer, it's not surprising that comparisons were made. Stockholm Syndrome still astonishes to this day with its power.

I must be alone among Prog fans in actually liking Coldplay, and I think they've got better from album to album. Call me unfashionable if you like. Hell, if their most recent output was good enough for Brian Eno, it's good enough for me.

Radiohead, but Coldplay get doubleplusbonus points for having the leas annoying fans and by being incredibly underrated.

Parachutes is great, A Rush of Blood is half-great, X&Y has a couple ok songs and Viva La Vida is pretty great.

Muse is usually laughable.

Specifically, because their lyrics are often atrocious, belted out by a guy who can hit high notes with a usually-annoying sneer, and the music is often too pompous for it's own good.

It often has a condensed epicness feel to it that come off as tacky more often than not.

Why? I don't have a problem with people disliking Muse- I barely listen to them anymore (though for me they're still the top of these 3). But a lot of people are just saying 'this band sucks', I'd just like to hear reasons and thoughts.

Specifically, because their lyrics are often atrocious, belted out by a guy who can hit high notes with a usually-annoying sneer, and the music is often too pompous for it's own good.

It often has a condensed epicness feel to it that come off as tacky more often than not.

I think you've just described a lot of Prog rock bands - what is the problem with a band that sounds like that again?

I prefer Muse.

I have no problems with any these bands being considered prog.

Good lord, we should be proud of Coldplay people!  At least they throw out something at least somewhat original into the huge mainstream crowd!  Sure Radiohead and Muse are kind of in the mainstream but Coldplay is one of bands who takes the music of Radiohead and makes it more accessible thus creating more Radiohead fans, thus creating more progressive rock fans.

Halfway through this post I got the feeling I was rambling. Stern Smile

Muse just has a perfect storm of the annoying indie sneer vocalist, retarded political songs, and--I mean this really, really seriously, keeping in mind how silly it comes from a prog fan--utterly pretentious approach. I get the feeling Bellamy has the emotional maturity of a 13 year old when I hear his lyrics (especially on the last few albums). The music, while sometimes at least affecting on a song or two an album, just feels paper-thin a lot of the time. It's hard to explain. I don't hate the band, but I think it has obvious flaws. I guess I could sum up how I feel by saying they feel like kids trying desperately to fit in with the big boys.

I like how you describe their music as "paper-thin" when it is one of the most full and driving sound any band has ever made. Their lyrics, although commonly on the subjects of apocalypse and politics, match their style of music, very (excuse the term) "epic". But they have many songs that are more low-down and and talk of a wide range of subjects. I understand your opinion but I'm just putting my word in that I think Muse is the best band today, especially in terms of showmanship.

also if you want to hear good lyrics listen to Thrice, especially their new album Beggars. its raging brilliant.

Brian: I think you're getting a bit emotional about Muse but I agree that Thrice are wildly underrated. I think a lot of people here would like them, but for whatever reason, Thrice seem destined to be perpetually ignored. I did a big review of The Alchemy Index in the non-prog review thread and it got zero response. They're like The Wrens or something, just one of those things where a band has the perfect storm of a bad label or an ineffective press agent or a messed up tour schedule or  poor timing or bad radio play connections or whatever and the result is that they can make as many brilliant albums as they like and still secure no attention whatsoever.

Sorry to break it to you, but Muse ARE the big boys - they make a lot of money doing what they do.

As for your opinions about their music, you still don't actually justify it, so you come across as the very sneering retard you describe.

Sorry again, but you do.

The description of their music as "paper-thin" is frankly laughable, particularly on the first 3 albums, where the music is self-evidently the exact opposite of what you describe, using what seems to be the simple language of someone deep in the grips of a simultaneous hatred obsession combined with severe denial.

While you're obviously entitled to your opinions, at least make them believable!

LOL I don't hate Muse. If you find my opinions unbelievable, then the fault is with you for not seeing around your own perspective, because I do believe them.

When I say "the Big Boys" I'm clearly disregarding fame or money. Muse has tons of fans and tons of money. I'm saying Bellamy tries to be deep, but utterly fails.

And does Bellamy not having a sneering, whining, wailing voice? perhaps it's a more negative twist on how he sings, but I'd like to know how many people totally disagree that he sings in such a style.

"As for your opinions about their music, you still don't actually justify it, so you come across as the very blind fanboy you probably aren't.

Radiohead is an amazing band.
Muse is a decent band.
Coldplay only has one song and they keep re-releasing it.

Which song my friend? I think there is more to Coldplay than most people acknowledge or are willing to acknowledge. And frankly I've tried to listen to Radiohead but really cannot get through an album without pulling my hair out. I had their entire discography at one point and for the most part they didn't do much for me...just my experience

Hate to be obvious, but Radiohead by miles and miles and miles.  Really, OK Computer and Kid A are all they're cracked up to be to these ears.  One of the greatest bands ever, Prog or not.

Yeah, I'm with DT-PT. Dream Theater is one of the most diverse bands around. I think what you mean is DT never releases their own songs. (Chill, everybody, I'm a fan Wink)

As for Coldplay? I'd like to know which song it is that they keep releasing over and over... Gosh, it must be really well disguised, because I haven't noticed at all.

I agree with the Coldplay part. Most of the people who voted are just judging by their singles, of course that Coldplay is not a Prog band neither they are the most original band around, but they have wrote decent alt. rock songs, and their album Parachutes is pretty much excellent allthrough.

I don't know, they change the name every release. It is sort of well disguised, but you can tell from the mood, the singing style, and the non-diversity that it MUST be the same track.Embarrassed

radiohead is one of my all-time favourite bands.
muse is good especially the last album.
but why the hell is coldplay here? everyone that likes real music made with ambition and creativity should hate them.

No, not really. I listen to music that brings me pleasure, some bands give me more than others. Coldplay with their debut give me a lot of pleasure, it doesn't need to be ambitious or innovative to give pleasure.

Muse, on the other hand, are way more ambitious and surely more creative than Coldplay, yet I can't stand their music at all.

I'm a fan as well, but there's nothing original about them. Everything I heard on Black Clouds and Silver Linings could be removed and put on to Images and Words and it wouldn't make a difference for either album. There's no diversity AT ALL, nor is their improvement or PROGRESSION from past releases.
